  1. I think Stingrays needs some competition. Yes indeed it is Chris Connolly who I included in response to those who complained that there was too much ancient history in the quiz. Here are all of the clues and it's a pity we didn't make it all the way to the 4th Clue because that would have been the real stunner: Who am I ... 1st Clue: I spent my first two years at the club playing mainly with the Under 19s. I am ... ? Who am I ... 2nd Clue: Although I never won one, I did finish in the top four in the voting for the "Bluey" in 3 of my first seasons at the club. I am ... ? Who am I ... 3rd Clue: A knee injury ended my playing career but I soon turned my hand to coaching. I coached junior teams and then was thrust into the limelight when I was asked to coach in place of the regular coach who was ill. The team I coached in this one off game scored a famous narrow victory. I am ... ? Who am I ... 4th Clue: More lately, I've been associated with a dark and sinister place called "The Vault" where we plot the downfall of great empires. I am ... Chris Connolly
  2. So it's time for another clue - Who am I ... 1st Clue: I spent my first two years at the club playing mainly with the Under 19s. I am ... ? Who am I ... 2nd Clue: Although I never won one, I did finish in the top four in the voting for the "Bluey" in 3 of my first seasons at the club. I am ... ?
  3. Our year from hell finished this morning with the final training session of the year. If the world doesn't end tonight then the players then go on a two week break before the real fun starts on 7 January ... On the off chance that the Mayans got it wrong could someone please post a report on the session?
  4. The situation is explained in this article - VFL player Wade Lees cops 18-month ban for importing performance-enhancing drugs I understand the need for authorities to be strict about such matters in order to identify drug cheats in sport and it's clear that Lees was probably careless in ordering such a product in these circumstances but ... the punishment seems excessive particularly in view of the fact he didn't even get the substance or use it and, as he rightly points out, there's little the VFL does in terms of educating its players on these matters. I think it would be punishment enough that he's "served" some time already and spent thousands attempting to clear his name. If I'm not mistaken, Shane Warne was given a lighter penalty when he actually was found to have used a not too dissimilar banned substance and he was an international sportsman who should have known better. Lees is just 24 so presumably was 22 when the "offence" took place. For heaven's sake, this penalty is absolutely outrageous and I hope he appeals and wins his case.
  5. You'll have to start thinking bigger than that!
  6. One of my sons (Andy aka Demonland) was in an Under 14 relay team in the Vic champs at Olympic Park one evening and, after winning their semi final, were told their final race was 2½ hours away so as their team manager I thought I'd teach the boys a few finer points in life and took them across to watch the dishlickers going around next door. I thought it might inspire them to run faster but it backfired. Almost missed the start of their race and then finished out of a place. The lads at least learned something about betting and the odds so the evening wasn't wasted. Anyhow, time for the next and last quiz for the year before we all come back refreshed for 2013:- Who am I ... 1st Clue: I spent my first two years at the club playing mainly with the Under 19s. I am ... ?
  7. The ground at Olympic Park was known as the Motordome so my guess is that it was used for some sort of racing cars. I might have a crack at one more quiz and then call it quits for 2012.
  8. There seems to be some confusion here but this report from the Herald Sun AFL asks Melbourne Demons to respond to tanking claims from 2009 season states that no charges have been laid against the club or any individual but evidence that has been gathered during the investigation will be put to "the relevant parties to give them an opportunity to comment." There may very well be no charges laid at all depending on the evidence and the comments/explanations of the club and/or any of the individuals involved. This is a far cry from what deegirl maintained in the OP or what Damien Barrett claimed in his tweet several pages back. Things could change over time but I have yet to see anything that resembles the sort of evidence necessary to amount to a breach of AFL rules of tanking as they have been interpreted by high ranking AFL officials over recent years. If evidence existed that was strong enough to sustain a charge against the club, I believe that charges would already have been laid. This is yet another storm in the tanking teacup and it's time to go back to our Christmas parties and other end of year activities.
  9. Well the fourth clue is about as current as you can get, isn't it?
  10. Well, we await the results of what five months of hard labour by the inquisitors has produced. Let's see what the alleged evidence is before drawing any conclusions.
  11. At least you got the right year. Joe Hogan played his one and only game in 1932 but both he and Cunningham missed the Titanic by a couple of decades.
  12. Who else but the only Melbourne player in history with the surname of Hogan who even had the same initials as our own future star Jesse Hogan? Here are the clues in their entirety:- Who am I ... 1st Clue: I played only one game for the Melbourne Football Club. I am...? Who am I ... 2nd Clue: The ground at which I played my one and only game no longer exists. I am...? Who am I ... 3rd Clue: I wore the number 13 and came to the Melbourne Football Club from Ballarat Imperial. I am...? Who am I ... 4th Clue: My namesake (surname) was recently recruited by the Demons but won't play for them next season. I am...? Joe Hogan
  13. No cigars yet ... so on to the next clue Who am I ... 1st Clue: I played only one game for the Melbourne Football Club. I am...? Who am I ... 2nd Clue: The ground at which I played my one and only game no longer exists. I am...?
  14. Do you mean the Nathan Jones look alike who became Federal Member for Pink Batts or the young colt from Seymour who was given the number 31 in 1977 but had to wait until the following year to make his debut?
  15. You're not thinking of Euan Campbell, originally from Old Scotch whose only game was in Round 16, 1968 against Geelong at Kardinia Park, by any chance?
  16. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/afl/localfooty/casey-scorpions-sign-rohan-welsh-as-new-senior-coach/story-fn53khop-1226539438201'>Casey Scorpions sign Rohan Welsh as new senior coach As coach of the last four Vic Metro squads, Welsh would have had a few young Demons under his wing including young Voldemort back in 2009.
  17. Probably 49 & 50 respectively.
  18. You're not trying to win this, are you Biff?
  19. Next one and please don't inundate me with guesses. You need to be certain of your answer Who am I ... 1st Clue: I played only one game for the Melbourne Football Club. I am...?
  20. http://m.afl.com.au/news/2012-12-17/casey-scorpions-appoint-vic-metro-coach?utm_medium=RSS'>Casey Scorpions appoint Vic Metro coach He's had a fair amount of success as a coach of junior footballers and was named the All Australian coach in 2011 and assistant to the AA coach this year. These are the type of credentials you would look for in your alignment coach if you have a young list you want to develop through your VFL club. It suggests to me that the emphasis at Casey will be very different in 2013 than it has been in previous years and the club's ladder position is going to be secondary to the aim of bringing our young players on to the point where they can move seamlessly into top company. The VFL traditionalists might not be happy with this approach but it makes sense from Melbourne's point of view and given that the Demons have plenty of full time coaches on staff, the fact that the Casey coach is only part time might not be such a big issue in this context.
  21. Tweet from Fox Footy: Tonight, 9pm on @FOXFOOTY, we'll screen his Open Mike interview in an on-air tribute to the legendary Tony Charlton. Worth a watch.
  22. Well done. It was indeed Robert McKenzie, son of Bob McKenzie who was recruited by Melbourne as a father son selection in 1967 before he turned 17 but suffered injuries in a motor car accident and didn't play in 1967 or 1968. He finally made his debut against Collingwood in Round 14, 1969 by which time he had turned 19 years of age. He wore numbers 50, 10 and 2 (his father's number) at various stages during his career and Robbie Flower took over # 2 after McKenzie left the club and, of course, really made it famous. McKenzie's father Bob (who was the subject of a previous quiz on this thread) played 125 games for 255 goals between 1948 and 1955 winning premierships in his first and last seasons. Who am I ... 1st Clue: I was recruited by the Demons as a 16 year old but circumstances outside football prevented my debut until after I turned 19 years of age. I am...? Who am I ... 2nd Clue: I had three different jumper numbers during my four years as a senior player with the club. I am...? Who am I ... 3rd Clue: After I finished with the club one of my numbers was taken by a player who was to become one of the club's greats. I am...? Who am I ... 4th Clue: My father's last game for the club was a winning grand final. I am...? I am Robert McKenzie?
  23. Time for another clue. Who am I ... 1st Clue: I was recruited by the Demons as a 16 year old but circumstances outside football prevented my debut until after I turned 19 years of age. I am...? Who am I ... 2nd Clue: I had three different jumper numbers during my four years as a senior player with the club. I am ... ?
  24. No cigars as yet. Alby was 18 on debut.
