If you take a look at the AFL ladder, I don’t quite know how, but despite the doom and gloom around here, we’re still in with a chance to play in the finals. We’re due to play against the Western Bulldogs in Round 11 and I’m fairly confident that the 22 who step onto Marvel Stadium wearing the red and blue in late May is going to be somewhat different to the 24 who played for us today. The result might even be different. Who knows?

I think if we had a complete clean sheet with injuries, it might have been worth considering Baldwin as a medium to long term development player for Ben Brown to mentor over the next couple of seasons. However, with two acl’s and Brown and Weideman likely to miss 4 to 6 rounds, I think we have to go a little conservative with list vacancies. It wouldn’t surprise if we went for only one of Daw or Declase - we’ll know in less than48 hours.

With a week to go before selections are to be made for 2021 AFL Supplemental Selections, the Demons are facing a dilemma caused by two long term injuries arising during the preseason. The club might have four potential list vacancies as it already held two unfilled list spots held over from the drafts in December 2020 (although it’s not clear to me whether a vacancy caused by a long term injury to a rookie like Aaron Nietschke allows the club to claim a supplemental selection or a mid season draft pick down the track). Based on training and practice match form to date, I think the club will take Majak Daw as a SS but I doubt that more than one of Kobi Farmer, Deakyn Smith and the latest invitee Kye Declase from Werribee would score invites at this stage. Going on a “needs basis” I don’t believe we should take either Farmer or Smith at this point - rather, I would seek to have them play with Casey pending a reappraisal for the mid season draft. Clubs need to leave open the possibility of selecting late bloomers in the Under 18 system, especially in Victoria who had no opportunity to develop in 2020. There’s also the possibility of picking up a player from another club not given a contract in the supplemental period. I was surprised that Richmond delisted Derek Eggmolesse-Smith in the first place. I would be more surprised if they don’t contract him after his showing for them on Friday.

The AFL just ‘ripped the heart out’ of its elite pathway — and clubs are livid at the ‘neglect’ AFL clubs are furious about changes to Victoria’s pathway program for elite boys after the competition underwent a controversial overhaul. This is a particularly sensitive subject in light of the fact that the Under 18 competition was abandoned last year due to Covid19. There would be many young players going well under the radar who simply escaped identification as a result of this. Astute recruiters might be able to gain advantages for their clubs if their networks get on top of this area.

Demons hand AFL lifeline to Daw Door open for discarded Roo after receiving invitation to train with Demons I’m not sure what to make of this. My recollection of Daw’s form on comeback was that he struggled. This is virtually a second lifeline and he has also had personal issues in his life of late. Things won’t be easy for him given the physical and mental barriers he has to overcome. It’s almost a flashback to last year and Harley Bennell but at least the club is thinking outside the square.

MAJAK DAW The former Kangaroo has found a new football home in the northern suburbs where he will play alongside a North Melbourne great. Daw has signed with division one Northern Football League side North Heidelberg for the next two seasons. The 29-year-old will link up with former teammate and AFL games record holder Brent Harvey and will also play alongside his brother, Anthony. Daw was delisted at the end of last season after 54 games for the Kangaroos. He made an inspirational return to the game in Round 9 last year after recovering from a fall from the Bolte Bridge. “We view the arrival of Majak as a big plus for the club as we look to consolidate in Division 1 of the NFNL after our third position finish in season 2019,” the club said.” At least Majak will feel at home with the Demons at Casey Fields. If I remember correctly, he might have played a game with some of them in a composite team for players who didn’t make their AFL teams last year while in the Sunshine Coast hub.

Baldwin wouldn’t have been a great option as he’s recovering from a second ACL.

On a brighter note Ben Brown is the father of a new baby girl. I saw the announcement on Instagram and, after congratulating the new parents, made a plea that he doesn't sit her on his knee for the next few weeks.

I wouldn’t get carried away by 2-0. Our opposition has been ordinary. Still, a win’s a win and two wins are two out of two which is a 100% record. However, North Melbourne and Fremantle appear to be the front runners and the big tests are yet to come.

I tend to agree. in light of recent events, the longest thread on Demonland should be restored to its rightful place in our media. Unfortunately, that place was filled very quickly after events in Washington a month ago, so for the time being, it’s returning to our General Board. That Will Bravo might sound like a West Indian cricketer but in fact he apparently goes well at football. He was added to the train on playing list at Hawthorn as a potential supplemental draftee after Tom Scully’s recent retirement announcement.

I know it’s belated but we can add Ben Brown to the list. It was also a “minor procedure” so probably - 4 to 6 weeks.
