AFL TRADE NEWS AND RUMOURSÂ
Thereâs an article in the Herald-Sun (no link available) entitled âMoneyball: Follow all the latest trade, contract, draft and coaching news across the AFLâ there are some interesting items â ⢠Essendon is keen to recruit Gold Coastâs Malcolm Rosas who is seen as a replacement for Irving Mosquito who has left the club. ⢠Adam Cerra is considered a certainty to land at Carlton with Melbourne mentioned as the only other possible suitor. However, the Demons arenât in a position to provide a trade. Luke Jackson is out of the question and the club doesnât have any high draft picks. ⢠Melbourne is keen to retain Sam Weideman who has received interest from Collingwood, North Melbourne and the Gold Coast Suns. ⢠Tom Lynch who was told by Adelaide that he wasnât getting a new contract. ⢠Hawthorn has offered a three year deal to Fremantleâs Lachie Schultz.

Toby Greene umpire contact
Some years ago, I was a member of a tribunal of a junior football league. It probably shouldnât come as a surprise but there were a few cases that we sat on where young impressionable players sought to emulate their heroes playing league football and it landed them in trouble. Fortunately, I didnât sit on any cases involving attacks on umpires but there were some in my time that were heard by other tribunal members. A suspension of a season or the remainder of the season plus the next were meted out. Iâve watched the vision and listened to the pundits arguing both ways but to me, this is a no brainer. Forget the argy bargy and excuse making about whether or not there was physical contact (there was). You need to look at the entire incident from beginning to end. Start with the confrontation in Greeneâs approach to Stevic, the way the contact was made and the aftermath of the contact. The look of every aspect of this incident was appalling and reeks of conduct unbecoming of a professional sportsperson in this age. A finding of not guilty or a light sentence in these circumstances would not be well received in the community competitions, whether senior or junior that struggle year in and year out to fill umpiring places. I believe that earlier this season, a number of competitions were struggling and in many cases, umpires had to double up on games over a weekend. The AFL Tribunal has a duty to decide this case on its merit but it would serve the sport well if it took a strong stand tomorrow night. I personally would like to see a minimum penalty of six weeks suspension with a stern warning from the chairperson that he is fortunate to have received just that. Hopefully, a severe penalty might influence GWS to not even consider wasting everyoneâs time with an appeal as they did a few weeks ago.

The Melbourne - Norwood connection
Full time in the Norwood game and theyâve cemented their place in the finals with a 12 point win over third placed North Adelaide. So hopefully, the fans keep their red and blue scarves on and make the short trip from Coopers Stadium to the Adelaide Oval for tonightâs game to make it two wins in the one day for the Redlegs!

NAB AFL U19 Championships
Solid 29 point win to WA who mixed players around and let SA off the hook a little. Very impressed with their depth and surprised that so many of their players are underrated especially since one of their star midfielders in Neil Erasmus didnât play through injury. Two of their other midfielders in Browne and Johnson currently sit in 18th and 20th place in Knightmareâs power ratings. I think there are going to be some changes when the pundits issue their September rankings.

NAB AFL U19 Championships
He played a nice game at half back/wing without doing anything outstanding. I think we should be able to pick him up in the middle to latter stages of the draft. The good thing for a player like him to train and play with the likes of Clarry, Tracc, Angus, Jack Viney etc. heâll have the opportunity to develop over time. His father was a quick learner and if he follows suit, I think we have a good prospect.

NAB AFL U19 Championships
WA dominant at 3/4 time with a lead of 43 points. They have a really good mix with a winning midfielders with Josh Browne and Matt Johnson both looking like top 10 prospects. Corey Warner on a wing (brother of Sydneyâs Chad) is a promising left footer on the wing. Their KP players are going to attract a lot of interest. Taj Woewodin is putting in a workmanlike performance. SA disappointing with their name players Horne-Francis and Draper quiet although the latter just kicked a goal.

The Melbourne - Norwood connection
Norwood up by 10 points at half time.

NAB AFL U19 Championships
WA leading by 3 goals. They look very strong in the key positions. So strong that Van Rooyen who is normally at CHF is playing in defence. Sharpshooter Jye Amiss looks good at FF.

The Melbourne - Norwood connection
Over the years, and particularly before the VFL turned national, there was always a close connection between Melbourne and the Norwood Redlegs in the SANFL. They have similar colours and historically, the clubs played many practice and exhibition matches against each other going back to the 19th century and more recently, in the early 1970s. The Demons recruited Tassie Medalist Graham Molloy from Norwood in 1970 as a potential Barassi replacement but injuries prevented him from showing his best in a 76 game career with the Demons. The ABC used to televise the SANFL grand finals and for success starved Melbourne fans, we used to get a kick out of supporting the Redlegs to premiership victory. Their team is playing North Adelaide in the SANFL this afternoon and I wish them success and hope they also come out in their numbers in red and blue to support our boys tonight.

RETURN TO NEVERLAND by Whispering Jack
Well ⌠yes, partly so but in fact his origin is Swiss. Ron is a third generation descendant of one of the Swiss Italians of Australia who migrated to Australia in the 1850s and 1860s to areas such as Guildford, between Castlemaine and Daylesford. A few years ago, he featured in an episode of the ABC series, "Who Do You Think You Are?". It was a fascinating documentary with a highly emotional scene of Ron returning to Tobruk to visit the grave of his father who played 54 games for Melbourne from 1936 to 1940 and became the first VFL player killed in action in WW2. Like his son, his played his last game in a winning Melbourne premiership team. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1519235/?ref_=ext_shr_em/

GAMEDAY: QF vs Brisbane
Two of the form sides of the competition meet on neutral territory. The Lions have had a number of big wins recently but theyâve been against sides that have been struggling so will they be able to withstand the pressure of the Demons took a big scalp last week? The prize on offer is a weekâs rest and a berth in the Preliminary Final. I say itâs not going to be easy but Melbourne will win the prize.

FINALS: Week 01 2021 (NON MFC)
There are a few differences with Geelong from last week but the main one is the kicking for goal. Last week, Cats at half time were 10.2.62. This week, one scoring shot less 3.8.26 plus a shot out of bounds on the full. Cats still having a significant advantage in frees.

NAB AFL U19 Championships
The WA governmentâs opening of its border with SA is timely for the elite young players from both states as it allows for the first game of the championships to take place on Sunday as planned. That leaves almost three weeks for the second game which remains highly unlikely given todayâs uptick in the Victorian case figures. Still, itâs likely that weâll get to see some of the top end talent that will feature come the draft in November. Hereâs a preview:- Where itâs won: Western Australia vs. South Australia Under 19s
