  1. Great job dees! I loved the team defence in the first 1.5 quarters. Probably the best we've played all season.
  2. Great job TMac for keeping his spot today.
  3. 6: Langdon 5: Oliver 4: Brayshaw 3: May 2: Petracca 1: T.Mcdonald
  4. it's pretty simple. Let's say Jackson plays until 30. If WCE/Freo get him next season, they'll have Luke Jackson for 10 years. If Jackson waits 2-3 years, WCE/Freo only get him of 7-8 years. So they're getting less total value from him. So in terms of our compensation, we'll get more from him now than in 2-3 years time. It's the same reason why someone like Horne-Francis is worth much more than someone like Lachie Neale, Zac Merrett, Touk Miller etc. He's younger so the team gets him for longer. That's how trade value works mate.
  5. Essendon (10 points up with 8 mins to go), Hawks (10 points), Gold Coast (2 goals). This is being pushed, bottom line. This late in the game you're relying on umpires, ball bouncing your way and good play. You don't played for 3.5 quarters of footy only to be 10 points up. That aint by design.
  6. I personally don't think Jackson's stocks can go any higher. His mysterious skillset and untapped potential is what is driving his potential. Not so much his on field output. If Gawn went down and Jackson became the number 1 ruck then that would be just about the only thing that would increase his stocks. The new cba and tv rights deals can be built into his contract, i.e. an X% increase in $$ from CBA and TV rights will mean an X% increase in Jacksons salary. So there's no real excuse for not signing other than not wanting to be locked in to staying with Melb long term. If we're ever to get rid of Jackson, it's now. His value will be higher now than in 2-3 years because that's 2-3 years of output the new club isn't getting.
  7. That's what I said. I said it's not by design i.e. we're not turning it on or off like a tap. I'm saying it's a trend that's now become a habit. We have been unable to defend the spread. I don't know why but I'd put it down to complacency. We are one of the worst teams at defending from D50 to inside50.
  8. I'm glad Montagna called it out. I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago on here and got slammed for it. 'Finding a gear when we need to' is a massive cop out and is the complete opposite of what the coaches would be wanting from the players. We've been flirting with form and have given 3 or 4 teams a big chance to beat us. It's not just the forward pressure, it's the pressure in the midfield too. Pretty much all over the park. I'm hoping for a big response this weekend. The media are generally a few weeks behind the devout fans with what's going no but now they're starting to see what I saw and that the wins are papering over several cracks.
  9. I do agree in that I'd prefer to lose Jackson over Oliver. But I'd probably just about prefer to lose anyone else over Jackson. It's taken Geelong 10 years to find a ruckman and they still don't have one. If Jackson leaves, we're screwed in finding a ruckman. There's nothing in it for Jackson to sign a 2-3 year deal. Clubs could offer him an 8-10 year deal right now. Freo/WCE still may. The potential is what is driving his value. In a lot of sense, the less he plays, the more he is valued. He isn't going to reach his full potential whilst Gawn is around anyway so his value will always be handbraked. If Jackson was sole ruck right now, I think he'd be an AA candidate.
  10. I saw afl360 and they spoke about melbourne: We've gone from 3rd in pressure to 14th. This is something that I've been concerned about for some time. David king thinks that it's a mentality thing and that we turn it up when we need but I agreed with Montagna in that it's certainly not by design and we're getting in bad habits and that showed with the ease of the ball movement that the Hawks enjoyed against us. I want to see manic pressure this week and start turning things around.
  11. If Jackson signs for 2-3 years it means he doesn't want to stay with us long term. Or at the least he is sitting on the fence. If he wants to stay long term why wouldn't we sign him up to a 5-8 year contract? This is what I don't get. if he signs for 2-3 years, it's basically confirming that he wants to go back to WA at some point.
  12. I agree but they would have had to part with multiple picks to get English too. He is a good player that's on the way up so it seems WCE are desperate for that young ruck.
  13. Damn this isn't good. At all. It means WCE are going to come hard for Jackson. If they've come hard for English, they'll come harder for Jackson.
  14. here I was thinking there was news but it's just an opinion thread. arghh.
  15. Good call. I think 'Life after May' needs to be our recruiting drive over the next few seasons. Petty is good but we need more than 1 and May has all the traits. I mean he's the AA full back so he won't be able to be replaced but we're in need for a 195cm key back with speed and strength combo. Or trade for one.
  16. what pick did we give up to get him again? what an amazing trade that was! Every week I would tear my hair out watching Oscar McDonald be our monster key back. Since May has come to Melbourne, it's made me re-assess the importance of key defensive talent. I'd happily pay up again.
  17. Sorry I'm talking about Brayshaw, not Salem. I think Salem's one of the best kicks in the afl. Brayshaw swings onto his left far too often. Even in the granny that he played, as well as he played he still kicked 2 on the full, and a few scrubbers. He's a heart and soul player but kicking, especially on his left, is a weakness, not a strength.
  18. Getting only a top 3 pick and change is a massive loss for the MFC. He was a pick 3 himself, so we've put in 3 years of development and turned him into a franchise player and we get not much back. That would disappoint me a lot. Not to mention, we'd then have to search far and wide to find a number 1 ruckman after Gawn. Something that Geelong hasn't managed to do for 10 years.
  19. agree with everything but I disagree that he is a good kick. he'd be leading the afl for most on the fulls
  20. does this need it's own thread though? There's about 30 draftees I'd like to have.
  21. I preferred Joel Smith over Tomlinson as he is quicker and can handle guys on the lead better. Probably makes Jayden Hunt more important because we need someone who can rebound.
  22. cool :) so 2-3 weeks now. I think he'll play vfl in round 11 and play in round 12.
  23. We're in a strange position. If Jackson goes, we'll have either pick 1 or 2 (if he goes to WCE) or 2 picks in the teens (if he opts for Freo). If Jacko stays, we have no first rounder, unless we trade for one.
  24. yeah, definitely injury prone. would come super cheaply. he's a significant upgrade on James Jordon but yeah obviously when healthy. Nonetheless, I do hope we get involved in a few raids in the off season. We're a destination club for some good players that are towards the end of their careers.
