I think we need to get this thread back on to the footy, so let me pose the following question.

Which is greener, real grass or Astro turf?

At the risk of steering this thread back to the original question; Astro turf also comes in blue, which grass does not (unless painted) but that's a whole different question.

I journeyed out to Casey today and was fortunate enough to watch 2 quarters of match simulation. Here is a brief rundown of random occurrences/thoughts.

First of all, there was no Lever (ankle) or Joel Smith involved. AMW is still in rehab and was running strongly.

It was Blue (Probables) v Red (Possibles) JvR was in blue. Ben Brown, T-Mac, Hibbo and Tom Sparrow were in red.
Gus Brayshaw started at half back for blue and stayed there all game.

Josh Schache rucked for the red team against Max/Brodie.

Adam Tomlinson played in the Lever role.
First goals were to Blue team through Fritta and JvR. Rooey followed his goal up with another strong mark but missed a very gettable goal. He contested strongly all game.

The half forwards all pressed up the ground high, leaving lots of open space behind them.

It was obvious that we have been told to move quickly from defence. They went short a lot and also moved the ball on by hand to defenders streaming through from behind. There was a definite urgency in the way they moved they footy.

Max took a mark on the lead, but missed a gettable goal.

    Lachie Hunter was in everything.

    Kozzie and Clarry were dominant.

Salo was very industrious off half back and looked like the Salem of 2021.

Promisingly – Brodie Grundy finished the quarter off with 2 goals, one from a strong grab and the other from a handball over the top. At the break – Blue were 4-5 to Red 0-1.

Chandler took the game on and evaded many tackles. However, I think his lack of a right foot might hurt him at senior level as he did run himself into trouble a few times.

Ben Brown took a strong pack mark, but missed a very kickable goal.

Kye Turner got a fist in a few times and looked strong in the air.

Taj Woey got a little bit of the footy.

Koz did a run-down tackle in the square, but only managed to hit the post.

Melky was in the blue and missed two consecutive snaps on goal. I would say that he is very much in their round 1 plans.

Sparrow snagged a goal from a push in the back from Clarrie.

Fritta got a goal out the back – evidence of the open forward line apparent there.
Ben Brown got one on the lead and goaled.

Hunter hit Fritta on the chest. Fritta in turn kicked it out on the full from deep in the pocket.

Viney was in everything. Nibbla, who was in red, was also busy.

In the second half, Grundy took three marks leading up at the footy. He was a highlight for me. He competed strongly, and if he couldn’t mark it he made sure he brought it to ground.

When Max was in the ruck, Grundy started forward. When Grundy was in the ruck, Max started forward. The ruck at the time would then drop behind the play.
Kye Turner, playing on JvR, showed some real dash. He was good. took no part in the match sim.

Hunter missed a very gettable goal after marking a Spargo chip. He was very vocal on field. He was my other highlight. I think Blue won the second period by a couple of points.

    Thanks TK, did Burgoyne participate?

EDIT. I'm on thin ice with the moderators, so it's not tactful or diplomatic for me to say such things

First let me say; tact and diplomacy are not things I normally associate with you, so bravo for trying something new.

Second; I find the Moderators are quick to delete posts these days if they believe someone will be offended. The other day I had a post deleted for suggesting that some of the posters on the "New Director" thread were tilting at windmills. I would hate deleting posts to become the norm on this thread. I love the banter, humour and wit and believe everything said is said with good ............ grace.

Perhaps you could try to confuse the Mods by prefacing your comments with something like; passionate Dee loving ..... nut job or something similar.

Saw a first (for me anyway). Clarry came off during one of the simulations. He was blowing a bit and was handed an inhaler. He had a couple of puffs and seemed fine. Is this usual for him?

Short answer is yes. I've observed this several times and often in similar conditions as today. I also think he gets a bit knocked around by hayfever season which can fire up asthma.

Thanks for the observations today, yourself and the other track watchers have done a terrific job of reporting.

I know it's a cliche but they really are "training the house down" for this time of year. You don't really get a sense of it unless you've been there. It's a far cry from days gone by

Having been involved in negotiations for a fair while your premise makes sense.

I used to call it the "grieving period" in the sense that participants needed to replace their anger with a sense of compromise. Unfortunately we are taught to "maintain the rage."

On the other hand compromise leads to a maintenance of the status quo which is perhaps more harmful in many instances.

Now back to the subject... Palace Dees tell us more about the backgammon app you beat. I would have thought it's a mathematical equation like checkers

Was taught to stay away from "compromise", always a better negotiated outcome where all the parties felt they got something. The classic trying for a "win win". Part of the art is finding what's hidden and what's really important. One of the keys is discovering what are the needs of the other side and acknowledging them. This is where some AI help would be really beneficial a bit like picking up a "tell" from a poker player.

AI will really kick in as a genuinely useful thing when it begins to be used to support 'mutual best outcome' estimation in things like trade week.

Not so much that it is cleverer or philosophically deep, but an AI would have the capacity to look at all clubs objectives simultaneously without getting a ripping headache, and without personally caring which club looked like they were 'doing best'.

Actually, that second part is an aspect of why Melbourne have pick-traded so effectively in the last few years - caring a lot less about who 'won' and just being interested in 'did we gain?'

Okay, I'll come clean - there's a thing my older brother (Yes, that would be, 'Big Goffy') was involved in and it is freak'n awesome. You'll need your nerd hat on:

Thanks LG that is very interesting, sometime ago I had training and some experience in negotiations. A tool like this could be very valuable in the future. I sometimes struggled with all the permutations and found the most difficult things to overcome were peoples stubborn and often mistaken belief in their own opinions. We have a lot to thank the Greeks for but the adversarial  method of debate means there is a winner and a loser. Often a better outcome can be achieved through a more cooperative approach.

Ring the club later in the week and ask them, that’s my suggestion. They are most helpful.

No offence JCB31 but the question was apart from ringing the Club.

One poster on here has mentioned that the majority of sessions will more likely be at Casey while the AO Tennis is on, which goes through to the 29th from memory. I can't remember if the tennis has a rest day. Will be interesting to see if this comes to fruition will be worth remembering for the future

    The word Loyalty

But in much smaller font underneath it, it says "to Port Powa"

You no doubt think your amusing but it wouldn't be the first time you turned out to be a fool. If you've been here long enough you'll know I will own my mistaken beliefs. In your case I will say I don't suffer fools gladly and if I'm the one I'll own it.

  11. Not too concerned about Koz going anywhere. I believe his girlfriend is a Torres Straight Islander who has been in Naarm for a number of years and has a job she loves with the Koorie Youth Council of Victoria. This together with what he has tattooed on his forearm has me feeling very positive about him staying.

It's automatic, has been for a number of years... Plus I have already made three payments since October from my credit card.

Ok that's what I was after. Mrs Dw and I are on a payment plan as well and received our membership pack well before Xmas. I suggest you ring the membership team. I had an issue with a 3 game membership that auto renewed and was being billed for, I rang the team and they sorted it straight away and sent a prompt refund. It sounds like something has gone amiss with yours.

Midfield roles will knock him about - most probably often as he has to be stopped and thus, will be stopped. He could easily be regarded as skilful enough to hold down a midfielder's role but in all honesty, he is small and susceptible, unlike his famous uncle. His true upside is what he can do in attack from almost any position within the forward line. That includes sticky fingers for the ball, tremendous positioning and passing by hand and foot, kicking remarkably well for goal and opportunities for other teammates, reading the play and predicting when, where and how to come into the fray and the road home at 1000 mph.

Yeah, Nah, I can see a thread on here titled "Kozzie Pickett made me cry"

I was under the impression we didn't move Hunt on. Rather, he was offered a contract on better terms (either a longer contract or more money or both) by West Coast which we were not prepared to match. The effect is that Hunt has left us, but I believe he had an offer from the club to stay. Therefore, to say he was "moved on" is probably unfair on both Hunt and the club, even though the end result is the same.

Mrs Dw spoke to him at the B&F and he was devastated, he didn't want to leave. When you say "moved on" what happens at a season end exit interview is the Club thanks you for your contribution but says your manager should explore your options. There is no nice way to do this but there is a respectful way.

For the record; I would have kept him and not JS however age may have been a factor.

    I get the joke.

Seriously though, its not cheating if you are testing the rules or interpreting them to your advantage, as opposed to blatantly breaking them.

It's probably the same in all sports.

I'll keep the joke going; Hawkins knows that propelling an opposition player forward by placing two hands in the middle of their back and pushing is against the rules, much like the burglar knows it's against the rules to break into your home. Both are preying on the ineptitude of those enforcing the rules.

Your reasoning is like the solicitor who sends a letter of demand on behalf of a client. Knowing that such a letter has no legal standing, often while preying on peoples ignorance.
