2023 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
The more I think about it, the more I think drafting tassie talent could be a great long term investment which is why I'm all in on McKercher. Sanders looks great too, but McKercher is just exactly what we need. Zach Merrett/Eroll Gulden eat your heart out except neither of them had the impact this guys is having. You've got time to develop a gun and best case scenario is that he fulfils his potential and becomes a jet, stays long term. Worst case scenario is that he leaves for Tassie in 2028 by which time most of our core will be entering their twighlight. But we'd receive overs in the way of picks given the draft concessions the club will receive. I can see the club looking at this strategy and I just don't see the risk given the picks we'd receive. Nothing like drafting a WA kid and worrying about a go home factor. Tasmania being a new club will need and want to pay overs for established players. Especially ones born and bred from Tassie. To be the face of the club. And they'll have endless picks to get it done. It's genuinely unbelievable that Freo are sitting fourth bottom atm. And we will have so much time and wiggle room to get another top 10 pick in. Given Duursma's underwhelming National Champs, there's a chance we could end up with a combo of McKercher/Duursma. Which would be incredible if we make a deep run into September.

AFL Under 18 Championships 2023
Dominant Grand Final performance. Clearly had enormous influence on the game. I still wouldn't call him a match winner to date. Super lucky to have him and Oliver for what they give our midfield. But they'd also be up there with the two sloppiest elite mids within the AFL, as far as ball use goes.

Disagree. We don't need another Petracca. Or Oliver. We have no issue winning contest. We have issues post contest. Namely, smart ball use and great decision makers. And I disagree that Trac is a match winner. Dusty in his prime was a match winner. He had elite finishing skills and would win games off his own boot. Petracca influences games due to his powerful contest work, but he doesn't win games off his own boot. For us to go all in on Reid would be stupid given the amount of quality we could land using the picks we'd be giving up.

Agree that Duursma hasn't lived up to his hype of last year as an underager. Which is disappointing. I still think he's scope is enormous. But for a top 10 pick, you need consistently good form throughout the champs. And he's definitely been inconsistent. Like others, I think McKercher is exactly a type we need. And next best avail after that inside the top 10.

@binman @A F I'll reply to your posts when I get a min. In the meantime, St Kilda down to 1 on the bench in the second quarter. Three vital players. Already without Hill, Higgins, Membrey and I think another @A F? You're telling me they're not important? Higgins is their leading goal kicker. Sometimes I don't know what planet you're on. Zero excuses for us now. Zero.

Clearly not. But it'd be nice to be able to take some inspiration from what Fly has achieved with that group. How positive and proactive game-plans can reinforce the idea that footy is fun. Providing the perfect environment for players to be 'up' for every game. Giving your supporters and members no option but to want to come and watch the style of football you play. The reasons are many. And it's just consistent positive feedback loop after loop. Goodwin is burning out players and supporters with his rigidity and sameness. Few list changes, few change-ups to positions. All little too late. And now we're coming to the pointy end of the season and we have a completely dysfunctional forward half and have two 'elite' ruckman who are just completely ineffective forward of the ball. Mids who just refuse to use the ball well. A full back who is instructed to kick to the same spot every kick out. It's a snore-fest. Give me some excitement!

Collingwood like every side have their weak areas. But they're streets ahead of us right now in almost all facets. And we are well behind Port and Brisbane. They way they play is so exciting and attractive to watch. And they're just always in games, no matter how much they're down by. Tomorrow is a true test for where we sit compared to teams 5th-8th. Can Goodwin inspire us to a comfortable win against a less talented side who have some significant outs? I have little confidence.

Any side performing as well as they have since midway last year would be receiving the same amount of media attention. But don't let that get in the way of your hatred of them. Also, @binmanand @A F, would love to hear a breakdown of how their loading is tracking vs ours.

A myriad of things, fatigue way down the bottom of the list. But whatever helps you take the losses easier cobba.

Can't believe we're favourites heading into this. And by some way too. St Kilda odds look juicy. It's also weird that posters think playing on a dry deck will sort our kicking out immediately. If my memory serves correctly, some of scrappiest and low skilled games have been when we play under that roof. Our form-line gives no confidence. Players nor coaches. Goodwin pick teams from a top hat every week, doesn't reward VFL performers and continues to play underperforming senior players. If we win this, it'll be amazing.

All ex-football media personalities have highlighted the same issues when talking about us to varying degrees, with or without a fancy whiteboard. Good to know you will take what Bartel says seriously though.

Yeh but @rjaysays that these guys don't know what they're talking about so let's not listen. Everything's fine everyone. We're loading and we're fine. Relax. Jeez.

Lol. He's been in the game/media since he retired! Even if his footage and analysis isn't ground breaking, it is still absolutely relevant. And far more relevant than what you have to say. As well as all others who seem to have a chip on their shoulder due to the fact that he actually critiques us from time to time. Some supporters simply can't take it if the club is criticised. Ye old mate @Rhino Richardsis one who consistently 'likes' the defending brigade or 'faceplams' posts that criticise us. How's that armchair going ol' rhino boy!

Genuinely can't believe we still play him. Offers nothing.

That's the art of Coaching though. He's got to have more of an influence on our players or make the hard calls and change the list/positions etc. If they're not up to it or not listening, there's got to be some sort of statement made no? This is where I think his unwavering faith in his players works against him. I think supporters overrate Trac and Oliver. That sounds wild. But for elite players, they give the ball up far too often. And I'm not talking about their disposals when under pressure. Gus while not of the same quality is another. It's this lazy, automated and unaware habit that just kills us. Is the number one reason we we kick ourselves out of games and or lose games when we are dominating every other facet. Add in other ball butcher(ers) around them and forward of centre in Sparrow, Viney, Langdon, ANB, Harmes and its plain to see why we struggle going forward. The flow-on effect this has on gane-plan, motivation levels, crowd atmosphere etc is much bigger than people give credit. - PREGAME: Rd 17 vs St. Kilda
