  1. Seemed like Talia was amongst Metro's best in all but the opening game against Country. May have even been swung forward for one of the games? Very impressed with his marking and run he provided. Another to watch in the back end o the TAC Cup season. Carlisle is a fair chance to be around with our second round pick, and would be happy to get Griffith's or maybe even Pitt here. James Craig looked good in the ruck for SA, McCartney rated him as the best performed ruck for the champs.
  2. Second that. Another interesting analysis.
  3. Cotchin and Franklin might have missed out on AA in their draft years...
  4. Definitely there in skills and footy IQ. Is 186 and 79 kgs, so needs to get a bit more muscle. Has all the tools, played HFF (and full back last year), can find the ball, but not a natural midfielder. Was electric for Vic Country on Wednesday, taking a huge pack mark and weaving through WA defenders and then burning them for pace. A good second half of the season for Geelong Falcons could see him really push Trengove and Morabito, but for now I have him just behind them. An intriguing prospect. https://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tab...39/default.aspx
  5. He did some seriously freakish things on Wednesday. Loved his pack mark, and the weave and run through 3 or 4 WA players drew a ew gasps in my section of the crowd. Could be seen as a bridge of the varying skillsets that Trengove and Morabito possess. The speed and run and carry ability of Morabito and the hardness at the ball that Trengove displays.
  6. It'll be interesting to see how Rohan goes in the second half of the season. I can see him making a Dale Thomas type charge up the order. He has all of the requisite tools, great pace, great leap and a reasonably good kick. Needs a bit more muscle, but a really exciting prospect who’s come from nowhere. He could really come into contention for the top 3 with a strong finish in the TAC Cup. I'll be watching him very keenly.
  7. Jason McCartney's eye catchers from Wednesday: Western Australia 16.14 (110) d Vic Country 9.8 (62) at Docklands Western Australia Travis Colyer A small midfielder with an excellent speed/endurance combination and on Wednesday he just continually took the ball at speed from stoppages. Had 23 disposals, five clearances, six inside 50s, and he’s a goalkicker – he kicked two goals. Had an outstanding, consistent carnival. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Kane Lucas A very good midfielder who continued his consistent form over the last couple of games. He spent a lot of time forward and was a leading possession-winner on the day playing as a high half-forward pushing up into the midfield. Had 24 disposals, six marks, three clearances and three inside 50s. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Anthony Morabito A tall, athletic wingman who had 17 disposals, five clearances and five inside 50s. He runs and carries the ball and is a proven goalkicker. A very good clearance player who has that real X-factor. Doesn’t need the ball 25 times to have an impact on the game – he can have it 15 or 16 times and be the most influential player on the ground. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Vic Country Dustin Martin Inside midfielder, was best-on-ground in the first half and single-handedly kept Vic Country in the contest against WA. Had 20 disposals in the first half. Has a strong body, made good decisions, is an elite kick either foot, and very good around the stoppages. Had 28 disposals, seven marks and five clearances. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Ben Cunnington An inside midfielder, he also spent a little bit of time forward. He just continually won his own footy and was very good around the clearances. He’s got a fantastic appetite for the contest and just applies great defensive pressure on the opposition. Had 23 disposals, seven hard ball gets and three clearances. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Gary Rohan He is a lad who would be exciting all AFL recruiters at the moment. An electrifying half-forward flanker. Has terrific speed, uses the ball well and is a good decision maker. He’s got a great work rate, and a tremendous vertical leap. Really strong overhead – he took this sensational pack mark in the last quarter. He doesn’t need to get a lot of the football to influence the game. He had 16 disposals and five marks – two of which were contested. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft South Australia 10.13 (73) d Vic Metro 9.7 (61) at Docklands South Australia Luke Tapscott A medium half-forward, strong, body-type player, just a lovely penetrating kick. He played predominantly forward but spent time through the midfield as well. He’s just been a proven goalkicker, kicking three in each of rounds four and five, and had a consistent carnival. Had 13 disposals, seven marks, five inside 50s and three goals in his final game. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Alex Carey Playing through the midfield and on the wing, he won a good mix of contested an uncontested ball. Ran with Tom Scully (Vic Metro) at times during the game and wasn’t disgraced at all. He continued to win the ball and had an impressive performance across the five games. Had 21 disposals and three clearances. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Hayden Jolly Just a really clever ball-winner. Continually wins the football and did it again on Wednesday. He was used very effectively by South Australia and looked to spend a bit more time forward. Had 21 disposals, six marks, five inside 50s, and kicked 2.3. Draft eligibility: Gold Coast can sign him as one of its 12 x 17-year-olds born January-April 1992. If not selected, he is eligible for the 2010 NAB AFL Draft. Vic Metro Tom Scully Clearly the best player on the ground, even though they lost. The leading possession winner, he hardly missed a target all day. His centre square work was exceptional, with five centre clearances and six clearances. He had 27 disposals and four inside 50s. In a side that did struggle, he was outstanding. He’s handled all the expectations he’s had placed upon him exceptionally well. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Daniel Talia A versatile key position player who played predominantly at centre half-back throughout the championships. He went into the midfield in the last quarter on Wednesday and nearly turned the game Vic Metro’s way. A strong body, his clearance work was exceptional. He wins the contested ball well and has good speed and agility for his size. Had 24 disposals, five marks – two of which were contested – and four clearances. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft Jake Carlisle He only had 12 disposals but four goals. And goals that came late. He’s a very versatile, athletic big man. Very good contested mark – he’s a rangy type. Along with Talia and Scully, really did give Vic Metro a chance of clawing back a game that looked to be all but lost at three-quarter time. Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft
  8. Great summary mate. Was at Etihad today, and you were spot on with all of the descriptions. Kicking was/is a worry with Naitanui too, but makes up for it with the X-factor. Just get that feeling that Morabito has potential that's yet to be tapped. Could be something special (could also be a flop...said the same thing about NicNat). Still can't split he and Trengove.
  9. Carlisle is listed at 196cm. Good size. I'd be more than happy for Melbourne to select Trengove/Morabito (I'm split down the middle with these two) at 2. One of Carlisle, Talia or Griffiths should be available here and thought they all showed a bit. Want to see more of Butcher before I make a definitive call, but thought he was disappointing. Not just in the contest, but off the ball as well.
  10. Thanks mate. Very keen on seeing Panos and Trengove next week (amongst others).
  11. Another 5 goals from Matthew Panos today. Anyone seen him play? A viable key position target?
  12. Haven't seen Butcher personally, and there's a lot being written about him. I can see parallels between him and Watts in terms of two young key position blokes with big reputations, that are getting criticism for not performing to those expectations (however realistic, or informed those expectations are). Like Watt's, Butcher has had an interrupted pre-season (well no preseason really) after surgery and I wonder how much of an effect that's had on his output.
  13. From late last year: AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan believes Scully has all the attributes AFL recruiters are after. “Tom is in the top bracket of young players … he’s an elite athlete, he has speed and endurance, he makes great decisions, his hands are so clean, he’s courageous and he’s a good size to play midfield,” Sheehan said. “He’s also an outstanding young man in terms of his work within the game and outside the game, as well.” Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats is similarly full of praise for the AFL/AIS Academy graduate. “We liken him to Robert Harvey – he’s a very humble person, is a true professional and is very passionate about his footy,” Yeats said. “He’s right up there (with the best I’ve coached) and I still don’t reckon he’s hit his peak. “It’s funny because most weeks he plays with us he’s normally accumulating the most amount of possessions, but also probably the highest number of one-percenters, and from a coach’s point of view that is tremendous.”
  14. Cheers, thanks for shedding a bit more light. Will have to take a closer look at him at Ettihad.
  15. Been keeping an eye on his progess in the champs. I get the feling that he'll be the breakout forward that Lewis Johnston was at last years draft. Wonder if he''s any chance to be around at our 2nd round pick?
  16. From Jason McCartney's preview of Div 1 Guns: Anthony Morabito: Supremely talented and athletic utility who can play forward. Exceptionally skilled and a member of Western Australia's squad at last year's championships. Can do magical things. AIS/AFL Academy graduate.
  17. I still think we're a safe bet for pick 1, so we would still get the pick of who we consider the best (Scully). Pick 3 is still going to be a very good pick. Griffith's or Fitzpatrick if we go tall (if Butcher's out of play), Stevens, Lucas, Morabito or Christensen if we go for a mid. Be happy with anyone of those.
  18. I posted these clips last year. Makes me happy knowing fellow Dee fans are still enjoying these. Last Time i went to vic Park was the Day Jacka kicked 8, we won after trailing all day. Beautiful day it was. 'why you little', I've actually got that Victoria Park Game on DVD as well. A cracker. Schwarta ended up playing centre half back after Sav threatened to take the game away from us. The Ox ended up shutting him down, hauling in 11 marks and 3 votes in the process. If my blasted DVD drive wasn't busted, I'd get more clips up.
  19. Christensen seems like a gun. Shifter also mentioned that Christensen is related to Long and Rioli, so fair pedigree (I think his dad played for Geelong?). Was BOG in the first 3 rounds of TAC, and 'just' good in the other games too. Wouldn't be displeased if we nabbed him.
  20. Posted on Demonology: hollywood Posted on Sat 09/05/09 17:30:22 Member # Date joined Posts 2070 15/09/2006 173 thought i'd go and have a look today, and saw the last 3 quarters. first thing i saw when i got there was jack take a good strong mark on the lead, 50 out on the boundary. umpire hurried him on pretty quickly and called play on, so jack ran in, stepped off his right foot to get around the man on the mark and dobbed it from the boundary 45m out, an absolutely magic goal. i reckon he would have got about 20 touches for the game and i don't think he missed a target once. although he didn't absolutely carve the game apart for 4 quarters like i have seen some kids do at aps level, as a key position player it is obviously more hard to do so in what was a low-scoring affair. he was clearly the best player on the ground though, and what struck me was how clean he was with his disposal and how every one of his kicks went to a bgs players advantage. it was terrific to see. he ended up with 3 goals in the 3 quarters i saw, not sure if he kicked any in the first. he played centre half back in the 3rd quarter when bgs were kicking into the wind and you could tell he was a natural forward, accountability wasnt his number 1 priority and he played a sort of sweeper role with the occasional burst up the ground. 2nd and 4th quarters he played a combination of on-ball and forward, whenever he went forward mgs star player alex keath abandoned his sweeping half back role and went straight to him. as an ex ggs boy myself i went into the game not really caring who won but hoping jack did well, but by the end i was firmly barracking for bgs, i do find it hard to be neutral watching a game of footy. with brighton 5 goals down at 3/4 time things looked grim but jack really came alive in the last quarter and kicked 2 good goals from set shots, one from a big mark and another from a free kick, both from about 35m out. how he didn't end up with another 7 or 8 free kicks (seriously) on top of the 3 or 4 he did get is beyond me...every time he went near the ball mgs double and triple teamed him, often with their eyes on jack and not the ball and obviously impeding him, but the umps were just letting them get away with it time after time. anyway bgs roared back into it in the last qtr and the game ended up being a draw. brighton probably should have won in the end and had 5 more scoring shots - 9.12 to 10.6. all in all it was a very exciting performance, he is a really beautiful kick and presents well which i liked - he always wants the ball and makes good decisions. bit of aggro there too which i liked - didnt take any garbage from keath who i thought was disappointing actually after hearing big wraps about him. i think we've got a 200+ game player at the club and a very, very good one at that.

  23. Maybe not as strong as last year, but certainly some good players cropping up below the trio of Scully, Butcher and Lucas. Inside/outisde mid Allen Christensen's been in stunning form for Geelong (BOG in the first 3 games), and intriguing tall Jack Fitzpatrick bagged five on the weekend. Add Koby Stevens and Jake Melksham and one or two others and the top ten looks full of talent, but think (unlike last year) the dropoff after that will be more apparent than the previous pool. Thank GC 17 taking all of the 17 year olds.
  24. I think it was the Kanga's game where I saw Hamish hanging out with Jimmy during the game. I think Jimmy met Hamish at a mutual acquantance's (or family members, can't remember) wedding, and Jimmy approached Hamish to jump on board.
