  1. Didn't this team finish 4th last year? I know Rawlings said that the Runners are just one of a number of things that went wrong, but the implication is one of: 1) The team didn't know how to play last year and were coached on-field through their run of good form at the end 2) The team caught lightening in a bottle at the end of last year and the Runners simply didn't matter 3) The players have simply forgotten how to play this year and need to be reminded of what to do and when (despite finishing 4th last year) 4) The coaches failed to implement the gameplan properly Any of these tell us that the problem is coaching!! Just another indication of how poor the Football Department has been for a period of time now. (I include the leadership group in that, as part of their role is to assist and coach young players through)
  2. I wonder what he thinks of his Dad getting the chop whilst he is over there?
  3. I don't mind the idea of a Wild Card weekend either, but also worry about diluting the of competition in the finals. Maybe the solution is to require a minimum no. of wins in relation to the top 4: I.e. to qualify for the Wildcard playoff, a team cannot be more than a certain win % outside of the best teams. That way, ladder position is less important, and in looking at the ladder this year, I would suggest Hawthorn and even Port would provide more of a challenge to the top teams than Essendon.
  4. I understand where you are coming from, and also have my worries that the key members of the Football department are yet to realise the err of their ways. However, raising Jack Viney's time off just doesn't make sense to me. Mental health experts and Elite performance experts will all profess to the importance of 'switching off' from the workplace, regardless of whether you are an office worker or a professional athlete. This year has been a horror show, and to think that the players haven't experienced that is nonsense, as is the belief that they should be made to refrain from a break as some sort of punitive action. I understand that these players have more time off than most, but they are also dealing with a level of public scrutiny and interaction that few others experience. To not allow them an escape is setting players up for burnout after a short time in the system. I would much prefer that anyone not required to be at the Club is away and clearing their head in order to come back fresh and ready to go, and that includes the Captains.
  5. About the coaches? Yep, absolutely is a guess. Just throwing up a different perspective. A guess about Goodwin? I'm not the one stating that, I'm just suggesting that if it is true, who knows which coaches are any good..
  6. Roos was certainly a fan of Rawlings. I think this is a loss, however perhaps none of us actually know who of the assistant coaches is actually any good or not. If Goodwin refuses to listen to anyone, maybe Plapp, Chaplin, etc. are all amazing, they just haven't been heard. McCartney, Jennings, and Rawlings are those with experience and credibility, so it makes sense that they're the first to depart, whether pushed or not, as future job prospects are brighter than those of the others. More changes sounds ominous, but from what I've been told not unexpected either. Pert seems to have the big broom out.
  7. I'm not sure they would want out after just one bad year. Perhaps it's more about the Football Department itself, as opposed to onfield performance? One bad year is just one bad year. One bad year as a result of a bad direction and a stubbornness to change is deeply problematic.
  8. They have to prove they can come up with a decent Plan A first...
  9. The Offseason is so much better when we're getting Pick 2 and Langdon, as opposed to losing Pick 2, Petracca, and have a split playing group. (If the playing list is split, the current captains cannot be reappointed. If it is specifically due to Viney, that's just another error by the coaching staff. Turns out this season can get worse..)
  10. Really good post. However, to those who, in response to this good post and elsewhere, are saying that the posters who've been critical are blind to the impact of injuries, your assertion is completely erroneous. No one is denying the impact of a bad preseason and injuries throughout the year. The criticism is about how the coaching staff have failed in response to this, and also the overall direction of the team. Some on here feel that the way the team plays is not conducive to winning games of football, regardless of injury (the cult of contested football, for example, particularly when the midfield has been the healthiest group). Others feel that the coaching staff continually make poor decisions that they fail to either adequately address or rectify (Fritsch playing back when the team couldn't score, for example). The point is that both injuries and a horrendous coaching performance since October can be true at the same time. Goodwin has even now admitted this - that the coaches got it wrong. So the base was already poor to begin with, the injuries just amplified the problems.
  11. I've tipped us!!! (Ok, not for any other reason than I need to do something to try and win my footy tipping) In all seriousness, surely after the pasting they've copped this week the playing group should have some pride and put in a good showing. Or is that wishing for too much?
  12. Seems very strange for them to announce this now, as I'm not sure what's to be gained from the speculation and attention Freo now faces heading into their final game. Lyon at Melbourne? Not sure. Lyon doesn't seem the type to sit comfortably as the 2IC or the like, it would have to be Director of Coaching with 51% decision power. With Mahoney et. al. now having backed Goodwin, I think they need to run with him as The Guy, as opposed to 'The Guy under Ross Lyon' or worse, 'The Guy until Lyon takes over'. I think the way Lyon left St. Kilda probably feeds into this narrative too. Lyon could move into a Balme-type role, but what would that mean for Viney? Just seems like the changes at Melb will be to those reporting to Goodwin, not to create someone that Goodwin reports to or a replacement of those he already does report to.
  13. Thanks for the response. If it's coming from above, do you think Goodwin would be out the door too if he wasn't signed up already? I'm wondering whether Pert et. al. extended him because they absolutely believe in Goodwin but not those around him? Or whether they don't believe in any of the coaching staff but are beholden to the 3 year deal for the moment.
  14. Fantastic season from Salem, who is now looking tired (who can blame him?). Frost is looking tired too, IMO. Every year we hear about Salem moving into the midfield, but it has only happened for very brief spurts. I do like Salem kicking out of defence, but he and Petracca offer a point of difference from the usual suspects, so now is the time. Maybe a Mid-HF jobshare for the two of them?
  15. Interesting times... So the Club is clearly backing Goodwin in. What I want to know is how much input he had into these coaching changes. Are these decisions being made above his head (and what would have happened if the 3 year contract wasn't signed)? Or is this Goodwin recognising that a new direction in both approach and style need a change? Maybe both? Hopefully it's Goodwin coming to the realisation that they've got the whole thing wrong and it's time for a new direction. Does anyone know any information about potential replacements? I would hate to think the broom is out without anyone lined up.
  16. The team looks like they're 17th with nothing to play for, but that still a significant coaching error for me. The team has not been balanced for a long time now, so vision like that shouldn't surprise anyone. Too many numbers at a contested ball, too many flying to spoil, nowhere to go on the outside, inside midfielders everywhere on the ground - it all stems from a maniacal obsession with winning the ball at all costs. The players are drawn like magnets to the ball because: a) That's who the majority are as players; and b) They have been instructed to win the ball at all costs.
  17. May will probably still be picked based on the football department's form this year - "He's a veteran who knows his body really well. He has had a few good training sessions over the last few weeks, and if he says he is right, we'll pick him." In all seriousness, they should give Max the last two weeks off to give Preuss more time to learn. Max looks absolutely over it (and his teammates), and if he did a knee or whatnot in the last couple of weeks, that's next year shot too.
  18. May hamstring. Why the [censored] was he playing? Absolute dumpster fire since October last year.
  19. With the exception of about five, it doesn't look like anyone is trying to get anything out of the rest of the year, coaches included. I'm sick of hearing opposition players tell us how easy we are to beat.
  20. There it is! The historically most exciting (and comfortable) time of the year for a Melbourne supporter! That's not to say I don't love the speculation and inside info - I absolutely do. Good stuff, Nudge. Christ I hope you're right!
  21. Agree with this. The only consistency that should be maintained is the tall backs, which is needed for next year. Everyone else actually looks weighed down by the same-old approach and structure. Time to free them up and see if something can be learned.
