THE KASPERSKY CUP SHANGHAI SHOWDOWN
Jumping Jack Clennett replied to rusty_kingswood's topic in Melbourne Demons
The only continent on which the Demons are yet to prevail is Africa(I don't count Antarctica.....though I'd be pretty confident down there!). Who says we don't travel well!!? There has been one Australian Football game in South Africa, but we weren't in it. Otherwise , we'd have the clean sweep. ( Incidentally.....we must avoid a game in Afghanistan against Collingwood. (the stands would be full of Taliban Collingwood supporters). -

I just hope our boys realise the enormous responsibility they've got...maintaining our undefeated record overseas. -
Don't give up,WYL, we could still win this. If Johnson gets a chance against the spinners he should try to whack a few sixes.200 ahead and we're a fair chance! The Indian quicks were looking just as dangerous as the spinners, with the ball reversing and keeping low more and more often.

Filth players investigated for Sexual Assault

At least 2 players from their '58 flag side ended up with police records. They should hunt Australia for some new player who'll fit in. -
PLAYING ON IN GOALSQUARE
Jumping Jack Clennett replied to Jumping Jack Clennett's topic in Melbourne Demons
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ How did I know that someone would try to come up with some completely puerile suggestion to defend Riewoldt's catastrophic clanger? Some people just like to disagree for no logical reason other than the jollies they get from disagreeing. Can anyone with a half-logical mind tell me why it's a good idea to play on after marking in the goalsquare? -

Riewoldt's clanger in Q1 emphasised the folly of EVER playing on after marking in the goalsquare. There is no upside to playing on, but quite a possibility of a morale-depleting loss of a goal if an unseen player tackles from behind. Some years ago, it was arguable to play on in such circumstances, since ,if the mark was near the goal-line, the ump might put the player on an acute angle. But that anomaly has been eradicated now. A mark in the goalsquare results in a kick from directly in front. It's excessively rare to miss from there.(even for Cloke!). There should be a blanket rule at our club........NEVER PLAY ON IF YOU MARK THE BALL IN THE GOALSQUARE!!!

The worst possible scenario has transpired. A young Collingwood team has won the flag as the best side in the comp. One always expects the side who's just won the flag to be strong the next year, but it's highly unusual to be a young side. Who's going to stop them? They're better than the Saints. They killed Geel WITH Ablett. None of the non-Vic sides look like being dominant soon. Hawthorn could trouble them if Hodge and Franklin keep starring. Melbourne's a young list . The Demons did better than anyone else against Coll. this year. (Oh yeah, I know, they relaxed against us!) Perhaps it's up to us to stop them repeating their multiple premierships of the late 20's early 30's(Depression for more than one reason!).

Grand Final Kick Ins

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------/ Clint, what you may have heard is what I consider to be a grossly under-inclusive and misleading statistic......They count the number of "coast to coast" scores, and the scores against (also coast -to-coast). This does not take into account clangers directly resulting in scores, or,just as importantly, failed clearances, where the defenders are left under desperate pressure for minutes at a time. No stat will reflect the latter, but watching the game creates an impression. -
Grand Final Kick Ins

-________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I agree that our kick-ins were marginally better in the 2nd half of the season, Clint. But they still are nowhere near as effective as Collingwood's(and most other team's). In fact StKilda's kickins(and there were plenty of them), reminded me of ours. Always pressure on the defenders, rather than a release into attack. I really respect your comments on footy tactics, Clint, so I'm interested that you're so happy with what I perceive as a glaring weakness. I'm certain the deficiency is not due to inferior skills in our list. -

Collingwood did it brilliantly today. St. Kilda were consistently under pressure after kicking in from points. Very significant in the result.

[quote name='Sturmmann' The game was over in the first 10 minutes, why risk injury when the game was in the bag already? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I don't think most AFL players think that way. Nice of you to give your support to "Dids". -
Elimination Final, 1988 Melbourne vs West Coast
Jumping Jack Clennett replied to MikeAlphaTango's topic in Melbourne Demons
What a day! We were unlucky not to be at the MCG where we'd have smashed 'em! Lyon kicked the winning goal after a handpass from my hero, "Dirty Dave" Williams. But WCE were unlucky not to get a free to Glendinning in range near the end, and should have kicked the winning goal soon after (I remember not looking , being so sure they wouldn't miss....what was his name again?!!) If only they'd played Dirty Dave instead of Eishold against Hawthorn the year before!!!!! We beat the reigning premiers, Carlton, three times in '87. (so that included a cut-throat final.) We'd have beaten Carlton in the 87 GF. -
