POLL: What should they do?
Well done if they get games started. Will be impressive leadership if they make it 4 or 5 rounds without major disruption. I hope this plan goes ahead and I hope they succeed. I hope it's broadcast globally that the AFL is playing football. It's this kind of effort that Australian's expect and take pride in the resilience.

Coronavirus & Other Sports
It's a graph that makes plenty of sense. Would be interesting though to see an economic line included somehow, there are also heavy consequences to the balance (as you mentioned in an earlier post) But I can't understand why a sport that's more made for televised watching than any other (F1) wouldn't run without crowds?

Coronavirus & Other Sports
Maybe they'll have more than 1 TV in the studio. If not, they can hire me for this and other genius broadcast future ideas

Jack Viney a Liability?
Viney version of Selwood. Itās a very good point.

Gawn Set to Be Named Sole Captain
Jack can be a game winner, made for finals, itās crazy people here question his value. Iāve no doubt Gawn will make an incredible captain, but I hope Goodwin etal are smart on managing how he leads on field. There were (far too many) games last year where Gawn fought hopelessly to the end. As captain he could likely go too far, be too proud and be injured. Selwood and Hodge are surely the captains everyone looks at. Both know when to step into the game. Gawn has been playing at 100% and as captain could go 110%. The burden of captain is real, too many of our brightest players have been damaged recently. Only Jones was improved by the role, Roos knew how to assign the role.

Geelong Eyeing Our Picks
Right - so only trading up can give them two top 20 picks. Top 5 in fact. I agree thereās a solid reason trading to 8. Seems more likely p3 will trade... and for some reason I canāt get that excited about Young.
-
Geelong Eyeing Our Picks
Letās say Kemp at 8 could be an option. But what happens if we bid on Green at 3? GWS have 6. What are the rules for them to do this trade to Geelong: p6 for 14&17. I understand they get Green with 14 and later picks, then still have 17. Theyāre not going to do nothing and waste 6 if they can do the split. Or am I misunderstanding the system?

Brodie Kemp (drafted by Carlton)
Welcome to DL Ohio. In answer to your question- you donāt have to worry, mostly everyone here is an expert on every player from 4 minutes of video highlights. Having not even watched his footage I can tell you Kemp will clearly be a superstar. Unless he becomes Trengrove-mark-II. Somebody else will likely have a more illuminating answer you your valid question.

Jack Martin
Ahhh. Of course PSD / ND. So heās not remotely in the conversation then. GC should select him, no question? But sounds like he will extend another year
-
Jack Martin
Thanks DC, Iām sure youāre right. Then why the continued noise? And comments from his manager after trade period closed. And if @Deefiant is right about around 25, then why did we inquire about him? Perhaps that was that before the end of trade. I find the trade value and player movements confusing, I guess thatās why all these guys do it full time
-
Jack Martin
What's most likely LH? You seem more across player movement/contracts than most. Would GC really use their first pick on him? Let Anderson slide to 3? Or will he more likely just re-sign? If PSD and GC select him, what does that mean for his free agency status next year? If he leaves they'll get another pick 1 or 2 anyway a year later? If GC pass, would we need to take him at 3? Or 8? Seems our draft position has so many potential strategies it hurts my brain.

The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy
Wasnāt a genuine suggestion... BUT GC do need players who actually want to live in Qld. Miserable if theyāre all homesick. They have culture problems more than talent problems. The Wagner boys are good footballers, at their āpeakā and well liked guys. Theyād be a good addition to the GC squad. So more seriously, both Wagners plus 2020 first round for King? They surely donāt need another 2019 draft pick, and no high level player is going to GC. What will St Kilda offer thatās better?
-
The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy
BOTH Wagner boys for pick 2? Or King? Not remotely a fair deal, but they need players that want to be there. Help the talented kids they already have enjoy Qld. Itās not exactly a bad spot to be an overpaid footballer.

Goody Presser (8/8)
Butting in... I want him to straight bat with more confidence. I'd like Goody to say "the game style requires all 18 on the field to function at a very high level. When it doesn't work it fails completely, but when it does work it's football that will win finals". I agree with @Sorry kids that his media impression matters to the players, even subconciously. However, I also believe @stevethemanjordan that Goody is a world different when not on camera. Goodwin is making a lot of mistakes, but he's learning...

Dees Confirm Chase for Arsenal Fitness Guru
Gosh, 500k. Good career choice, stay fit + get rich. Slightly OT, but I was put off by the āpace settersā when the players were running in pre-season. In that it surely falsely enhahnced their times. Faux data set perhaps didnāt help.

PREGAME: Rd 12 vs Collingwood
Demonland pre-game articles by @Whispering_Jack are among the most brilliant writings in any sport media. āScreamā v WC deserves some kind of sports literary award. Iām a great fan of @The Oracle also and @george_on_the_outer on the post game, consoles my wounded pride at being a Dee. Iām sure itās been said before... but the considerable work and passion is much appreciated, Iām sure by all.

Trade Petracca?
This must be the real question. The only players to have markedly improved under Goody are players that fit his team game style (whatever that is) - like ANB who can make numbers around the ball. Roos gave the players roles based on their attributes and those players rose up. Harmes is maybe the only player Goody gave a signature role - and he shone. I hope he can pull it together. But the fact there isnāt a great deal of exciting player development with a list of extreme talent... this has to be the big question

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
It does seem a combination of so many things... the team looks at sea. The game is now perfectly suited to our former No1s - Watts and Hogan

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
I admire Goody has a plan and heās implementing ruthlessly. I didnāt like Goodwin at first. But his commitment to his vision is winning me over, even though I donāt understand it.

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
There really isnāt an excuse to be this poor. The list on paper has incredible young talent that should see significant improvement year on year. Chemistry solidifying. Confidence building. There are similarities to last season where we were scored on too easily, this year thereās a lack of scoring power in the fwd half now too. Iām a believer that this can turn around. But I confess to having absolutely no idea why the team as a whole is performing so badly. I canāt pin this on specific players.

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
Who are these players with āintuitive footy senseā on the MFC list?? The failures are with the players who lack any sense at all, it seems.

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
He was so relaxed, it was strange and concerning. Of course the players carry the message from the coach post game, so Iāve no doubt he was set into that mode by Goody. Perhaps heās a genius coach, keeping them believers even at 0-3. The failures are bizarre, players like Frost and ANB arenāt as bad as that. It all looks so inexperienced. Even the experience (like Jones) seemed to run to positions to escape responsibility, he guarded grass more than anybody. Goody traded Watts and Hogan, he doesnāt play an experienced forward like Garlett. He believes full team buy-in to his game plan will win over individually gifted players. Iām going to say Goody is a genius coach as heās doing everything different to what I wouldāve thought. He still has Brayshaw believing, so maybe thatās a good thing?

Impact of rule changes
This is a great thread Binman. The first rule change you listed and detailed, is the most surprising to me. Generally the AFL want to improve the spectator experience. Positioning was a real issue back with the āfloodā game style, but more recently positional coaching has been far more nuanced and interesting. Coaches, in particular Goody, were trying out new ways to set the team and I thought that was exciting, sometimes frustrating, always interesting. You could argue those manoeuvres are too āinside baseballā for the wider audience, so the AFL donāt care to let that play out. But then thereās the incredible drama of tight games and those last few minutes where the captain has to direct the team to setup defensively to protect a slim margin... dramatic, even when we didnāt and left the game exposed, then lost! These are great moments in the game. Iām not sure what the AFL are gaining here? Perhaps a really clear graphic setup of the positions in AFL, lasting for just a moment before it becomes a scramble to reposition. I liked that Goody had new ideas and was brave enough to try them. Gave us an edge, with so many players being trained to be so adaptable. Iām marking this one down as a loss for the AFL and a loss for the Dees.

24 hours to go - closest to the pin
In the morning we give a late but good pick (maybe 46) for KK. Freo are spooked. Freo concede they must give Neale to Brisbane for 5. Now Freo are in a total mess. Freo give 5 and next years 1st for Hogan. GC take the Freo 2019 first for May. On draft night we swap 5 to Adelaide for 8 & 14. Even if this happens Iād prefer Hogan to stay.
-
Farewell Jesse Hogan
I believe it was clear that KK can be a separate trade. Hogan for pick 5 and 23 was a fine trade, last week.
