No one is holding a gun to the clubs head. If a club wants a long contract it is reasonable to have clauses regarding career ending injuries. Thinking on the run, all players are employed by the AFL and the clubs inform the AFL of the percentage of salary cap that each player gets. No payments from clubs to players.
