If calling 'worth every penny we spent on him' doing an ACL and sitting on the sidelines, then yeah. He had a prior ACL history, we paid overs, then he did his ACL in his first year at the club. Those are the cold hard facts. It backfired on our great football department, and this is more to the point I was trying to make to the other poster (Moonshadow), who ridiculously suggested that posters shouldn't question our football department, which is a brain dead statement to make. It presumes that the football department gets it right every time, which it doesn't. The Lever trade is a perfect example of that.

Had our great FD not sold the farm for a 3rd up back with an ACL history (who subsequently did an ACL in his first year at the club), then maybe we would already have May this year. FMD!

Hopefully Freo pulling out of the Hogan trade means we don't get May.

So we've told Freo if Hogan does seek a trade, that picks 5 and 6 will get this deal done. Obviously Freo will baulk at that, and won't give up those picks, and we will most likely come to an arrangement of picks 5 and Freo's 2019 first round pick. That would be a good deal for Hogan. I can't see Fremantle making the 8. They should still be bottom 6-8.

The most sensible idea yet. The only trouble with that is GC are falling apart and there is a bidding war for May. Our 2019 first round pick would be overs, but GC would ask for Fremantles 2019 first round pick, and based on our prior drafting history we'd probably give them both. I think we should keep clear of May as he is being massively overrated at present. He is barely worth a second round pick to my eye. I think if we are going to stuff around with the likes of Steven May then we should've just kept Pederson on our list, as there is not much difference in the two.

If we somehow manage to get both 4 and 5, then taking them to the draft is an absolute no brainer. Rankine and Walsh are exactly what we need. It might be possible to get both. That would be an insane result. I hear talk of Steven May, but I think if we wanted a similar player we'd of kept Pederson on. I don't see much difference in the two.

I hope Buckley is extra persuasive. Collingwood can overpay for this spud. May is no better than Pederson.

He can play but he has been concussed a lot. He is probably a knock or two from giving it up. We aren't talking about a kid with the mindset of Angus Brayshaw, who wouldn't give it up even if he copped more knocks. Brayshaw is stubborn. Kolodjashnij is cut from a different cloth altogether. He is hesitant. I watch him. I watched him as a junior. He has great skills and elite movement, he is a very graceful mover. But, he is just a knock away from giving it up IMO. I'd be prepared to give up a 3rd round pick but nothing more.

We have all waited for Jesse to become a good player, and he is a good player, in fact, he is better than a good player. But if reports are right then Hogan has 1.2 million a year to weigh up. Its not that the decision is out of our hands - it isn't. But that offer is something we can't even nearly match when Hogan is out of contract. Do we want to deny the kid a life changing payment for our short term benefit? I don't think we do, and I don't think we benefit a lot. The situations evens itself out in the short, medium and long term when you factor in draft picks - our ability to move them around - and salary cap space. We may actually be better served moving Hogan on, and he may be better served taking the 1.2 million a year. This could be a win/win for both parties.

If reports are correct and Fremantle are offering Hogan 1.2 million a year, then obviously Hogan has something to think about. Even if he didn't want a trade, those are the type of number that change an individuals life. Lets be fair. Everyone of us in Hogan's position would be looking at those numbers and weighing up our future. He probably takes the deal. I say that because I would take the deal, and everyone I know would take the deal. Throw in a potential to go back home and it becomes an easy decision. So Hogan probably goes. What do we get? I would really hate MFC to waste anything on Steven May. I have watched football for 30 years and if Steven May is worth anything better than a 3rd round selection I will eat my hat. He is an undersized backman, who is slow, an ineffective. I see nothing in May at all. I have watched him closely the past two years because for some reason people mention him as a top class backman. He isn't a top class backman at all, he is really not much chop. I would have him on par with Pederson.

May is slightly better than Pederson was.

I hope we make a big play for Kelly this year.

If May is involved. The only way I see this trade happening is. GC - Out: May and 1st round pick In: Neale and possibly Freo 2nd rounder MFC Out: Hogan In: May and GC 1st round pick Freo Out: Neale and 2nd round pick. In: Hogan

I think that is a pretty reasonable post. If Hogan did want to leave its not a bad thing. I suspect he doesn't and then we look towards acquiring some outside speed by other means. The good part of that is that somewhere - either on an AFL list or state list - there is that player we need. It is just a matter of identifying them (and hopefully getting them on the cheap).

It would be tempting to move Hogan on for Freo's 2018 and 2019 first round pick. Then use that 2019 pick (along with our 2019 pick) to make a play at Kelly at the end of next year, unless, he is a free agent. Kelly is exactly what we need. He is the missing piece.

I would trade Hogan if he wanted to go back to Perth. It would be worth asking the question. We are perfectly placed to cover him, and he would currently hold great trade value, so if he wanted to leave then its a no brainer. Outside of that I would be cautious of trading a player that didn't want to be traded as it might upset the group, and could be more destructive as a whole then any value we may see for one single trade (even if it was going to result in a top 5 pick).

So long as Harmes stays fit we have a show at winning it this year.

There is not a hope in hell Fremantle are giving up picks 4 and 5 (if they get both) for Jesse Hogan. That would be a ridiculous trade on their part. Unrealistic and of course we would entertain it. Sounds like Lynch is off to Richmond. They will be hard to beat. But beatable all the same.

Hype merchants were saying the same about Boyd, McCartin, Patton, Weitering, Francis, and many others I am sure (that is only in the past 5-6 years). There is two things here. Firstly, are talls taken early in the draft going to be better than an already proven quality tall? I would say its unlikely. I would take McGovern ahead of all players I mentioned above. Secondly, are talls taken early more likely to be more value than midfielders taken early? I would again argue that they wouldn't. Over the years there are far more examples of midfielders proving to be of better worth when taken early - as opposed to talls. Carlton would be made not to the pull the trigger on McGovern and a pick downgrade.

Carlton are in a good position because more than likely McGovern alone will end up better than a tall they would select with their pick 1. So by trading pick 1 for a slightly worse off pick, and perhaps taking a midfielder with it, will just be a bonus, and history says it will more than likely result in a better outcome than a tall anyway. If I were Carlton I would jump at trading away pick 1. They still have Weitering developing down back, and they have both Curnow and McKay up forward. They are going to need to give Cripps some help in the coming years or he might pull the pin himself. Get in McGovern, get a young mid, have a tilt at another mid next year during FA, and get more development into McKay and Curnow - Carlton will be set up.
