Thankfully, we're looking good for the 2008 draft.

Choko if I'm comprehending that article correctly then we would only be missing out on eligible Queensland youngsters in the next two drafts.

2010 and beyond we would be getting the same level of shafting as every other club...assuming we have started our climb again by then!

Im not sure that I actually agree that we would be shafted per se. For that to be true as I imagine is the assertion of the poster that we would finish as equally miserably next year as we are to this year.

It very probable we will finish very very low..if not bottom this year having only won a pair or a tre. We will in all likelyhood get some decent picks out of this years draft. But stop for a minute and consider the position we wil be in going into the 2009 season:

Practically all the deadwood will be gone. Possibly trading might see us going into 09 with a much more balanced and fitter line up. The team willhave started to gel ( one hopes ) with kids no longer quite so green and now some games under their belts. This comig summer training wil be far better organised and fruitful.

To be seen as getting shafted in NEXT years draft infers we would win only 4 games and I dont think that will be the case. We will, just like most teams be looking at pretty lean pickings ..or be involved in some silly circus trading.

On this basis its fairly important we worry less about winning as such this year but concentrate on getting more miles into the players we WILL go forward with and make the best of this years draft !!

i think you'll find too, that they won't get the top 10 picks... at worst it would be one for gold coast, one for established sides, one for gold coast etc.... so even if we finish bottom we should still get the 2nd pick..

Being a traditionilist i would like to see a tasmanian team before the proposed teams in QLD and NSW

Its just a pity Tassie hasnt got the clout that the AFL wants to hear ........sustainable income dollars

They sure do have some passionate supporters though............unlike QLD and NSW

Sad but i think they might have missed the boat

As for draft pick allocations and comcessions its going to be interesting solving the 2 major problems that the AFL faces

1. making the 2 teams competitive from day one

2. limiting the effect on the other 16 clubs

You could also put in that equation is it better to add the 2 teams at once or a season apart

The actual problem for Tassie is that its ALREADY footy mad !! No need to convert them or win a market share.. its done already.

Reading the article, it suggests that in the '08 and '09 drafts, the GC team will have decent access to QLD and NT players. Going on this years draft talk, at the moment the main stand-out players are not from QLD and NT. Of course by years end a few would bob up from these states, but how many kids get drafted from NT and QLD every draft? Not that many at all.

This also goes for the 2009 draft. The majority of the kids that will be drafted will be from Vic, WA, SA, and Tassie (mostly from Vic and WA). few get drafted from NT, NSW or QLD.

So in terms of the '08 & '09 drafts, we nor will the other teams be shafted. The 2010 draft is where it seems to be happening. As such, this year is meant to be a decent draft from all reports. We are in a re-build phase, so if the MFC go about list turn-over in the proper way (in terms of a re-build) we should be very active in both the '08 and '09 drafts. Hopefully by the end of next year, most if not all of the dead wood would have been taken care of. Our re-build will be already in full swing and if we are still on the bottom by the end of next year, it would mean we have had 3 years at the bottom.

If that is not enough time to really re-build with quality, then god help us. 2010 we could potentially trade some experience for high picks from these new teams. No doubt in 3 years time, there will be players who's heads will be on the chopping block.

Ultimately, if we are still on the bottom of the ladder and are complaining of being shafted in the 2010 draft, it would have meant that our re-build from '07 to the end of '09 (3 years to draft and trade for some quality kids and picks) would have failed, and it would be the MFC's fault, not the AFL's for the position we would be put in.

I love early picks. The 09 and 10 drafts will be tough for existing clubs, thats not to say we might not find a gem. There have been plenty of dud draftees in previous years, including early rounds (cough cough- Adam Fiora). We just have to hope we land some lateround gems (IE James Hird).

Would love to have the power of the new clubs, they will make some big moves come trade week.
