PREGAME: Rd 05 vs Essendon

Locks Apr 10, 2026

Weโ€™ll learn a lot about the 2026 club on Saturday. Will we have the maturity, professionalism and hunger to beat a poor performing side and elevate ourselves to a 4-1 start and suddenly be in the mix for a top 10 spot (with a number of potential wins on the table IMO)?

Or will it be another repeat of previous Gather round games where we donโ€™t come to play and the opposition play attacking and nothing to lose type footy, and blow us away in a quarter of footy.

The lead into this game reminds me of the 2023 Gather Round where we had a 3-1 record and the Dons were about $4.20 to win it and were not given a chance.

I feel sick for this gameโ€ฆ probably because the last 2 times weโ€™ve played Essendon in gather round where weโ€™ve been predicted to win weโ€™ve lost. Whatโ€™s with us playing them at gather round ๐Ÿ˜…

Five teams remain winless in Gather Round: Hawks, Doggies, Tigers, Kangas and Eagles.

Five teams havenโ€™t suffered a Gather Round loss: Port, Lions, Pies, Giants and Cats.

The law of averages says this will change, as will us losing to Essendon again.

No Williamson this week, so that's a win.

We do have Nicholls though ๐Ÿซค

Where did you see this? AFL site only has tonights game line ups and umps.
I want to know if he is doing the cats game cos a mate of mine reckons he hates the cats the most.

I'm a gambling man and i'd seriously recommend NEVER putting everting you have on the dees to win ANY game!

I'm like GW ... I never bet on the Dees. If we lose, then I've lost twice.

Having said that, I don't bet every round. And I hope I lose my money!!

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics youโ€™d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
