Interesting - new role with Richo staying on. Anyone with inside word - how does this all fit together? is this where the likes of Bartel could get involved?

All I know is 2026 will be Richo’s last in his current role. So maybe this is just to get the right man in a year early which is perfect for Steven Kings first year.

I find it amazing if they know Rich is in his last year, that he is so central to so many big decisions.

Agree with this. Was recontracted for 2026 when Goody was. Really unfortunate.

  • Demonland changed the title to Melbourne's Hunt for New Head of Football

Just bizarre that Richardson can stay in his role, with a confirmed end date, and have as much power as he does.

Hopefully he is put on gardening leave as soon as a suitable Head of Football is found.

All clubs are front and back ending players contracts to fit within the salary cap. Are the doing it with the coaches salary cap?

Could it be that while Richo is consulted on changes his involvement is not in a decision making capacity but rather to use his existing relationships with staff and players to help communicate changesand smooth the transition.

The only thing amazing is the continued disconnect between Demonlanders and what's really going on at the club. Richardson is highly respected, both internally and externally.

Does anyone actually know that Richardson is in his last year? He has a contract for 2026, but do we know it won't be renewed or he'll leave (for whatever reason)?

We've moved on the President, CEO, Head Coach, other FD personnel, 2 of our marquee players, etc. etc.

If you think the only reason Richardson is still there is because he has a contract, you're kidding yourself.

Thanks Bing - I probably wasn't clear in my comments. Don't have anything against Richo. He's had a number of senior roles at various clubs and was clearly pivotal in our premiership.

My query was more that if the club know he's not going to be there beyond this year, wouldn't it make more sense if those that are there for the next 3-5+ years be the ones that make the decision on key hirings as they are the ones that will have to live or die by their choices.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
