The only response to date suggested they were all involved in knee incidents but, alas, that is not the answer.

edit: A second player thought they might all share a surname with a well known musician but, although many do, again not the answer.

Hint: there is no connection to sport of any description.

It's a big shout out to @Little Goffy who has solved the mystery.

LG now has the privilege of selecting any draftee he so desires to join MFC.

A second clue: The common factor is not related to any profession, so you can rule out musicians, comedians, actors etc.

I wondered if anybody might be tricked by the spectrum of colours in the team list.

That in fact was a rainbow herring, which is a cross between a rainbow trout and a red herring and nothing more than a naughty misdirection.

A pair of ruckmen from the 70s/80s era in Rod Blake and Mark Lee would both be eligible for this team.

One more player I probably should mention before logging off for the night.

Former Kangaroo and Hawk big man David Hale almost made the team, but in the end he was just a little off the pace.
