I invite you to spend some time if you can watching our comeback win against Geelong in the 2021 season.

Compare those players to now in terms of strengths and footy smarts, disposal, defensive pressure. But also watch the influence of players who have left or been taken out of the game by thugs.

It really is very insightful.

Three great losses: Gus, Luke Jackson, Aden Yze.

Add on: Petraccas love for the club and its supporters. Remember that post game interview and the tears? ... Where are those sentiments now Christian?

Not a comment on Lever, rather the group as a whole - if he had that kick now, the first instinct would be to look inboard for a kick backwards or sideways to a loose player, rather than looking for Gawn in the hot spot. There is no positivity or flair in the way we play and it shows in our results.

Can you imagine a world where Yze takes over Simon at the end of 2024. Gus and Neville Jetta would be great additions at the club from a culture and leadership perspective.

Lever's role vs Geelong 2021, Brisbane 2023 and Carlton 2022... all very close, important wins that he played a huge role in. We miss his leadership more than people realise. Definitely more than we miss May.

Is Christian 2025 the same as Christian 2021?

Neville Jetta

Shocked his name doesn't come up more on here. I'm not close to the club, but every single thing I ever heard about him was that he was a man of enormous integrity, respected for far more than his footy.

Did he leave the club on decent terms?

Don't know.

But I'd definitely like Jetta and Brayshaw back to the club in some form of leadership role.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
