A menace to every top line key forward in the competition, May’s marking, interception and spoils are the dream of every football coach.

Incredible what he does for a 193cm player. Obviously, tape measures aren't everything - as JVR has shown and will continue to show.

Just a magnificent defender - Melbourne have actually been blessed with full backs over the years, and he is top of the tree.

Steven May just seems to get better and better, premium defender that hates to lose let’s hope that Maysie can maintain the rage for another 2-3 years and celebrate another couple of premierships.!!

He is one of my favourite players. Wears his heart on his sleeve and hates losing.

The best key defender I've seen in red and blue.

Big call Layzie but you may be correct.

At the start of the year, he wasn't playing well and I thought age was catching up with him. I certainly was wrong as he bounced back strongly and played out the year in sizzling form. I suspect he was just adjusting to our tweaked game plan in the early games and/or opposition tactics to try and negate their (May and Lever's) defensive supremacy.

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
