The quiz posted by @Roger Mellie has inspired me to saddle up the old grey matter and take 'er for a ride.

Below is a list of ten cryptic clues, the answer to each being a Melbourne listed player since the year 2000.

PLEASE READ:

a)  Reply by PM only.  Don't blurt out answers or guesses on this page, please.

b)  Don't be greedy and hog all the glory.  There is a limit of two (2) correct answers per poster at this stage.

2.     Scratchier captain irritated. (9, 8)     Christian Petracca

4.     Floral mutton chop. (3, 9)     Tom Fullarton

You're asking us these without letter count, @Demonstone?

And do they follow the cryptic crossword clueing conventions?

  • Author

Yes and yes!

I was expecting to hear from yourself and @WalkingCivilWar, cryptic fans both.

Some clues are easier than others.  Some are surname only, others both names included.

They also have something in common but that's not the object of the puzzle.

After a certain period of time, can I please submit two more answers?

  • Author

The letter count may have helped!

Well done to @WalkingCivilWar who has answered correctly that:

6.  Christian Salem (anagram of "sarin alchemist" that she found the formula for)

9.  Spargo (box = spar + run = go which makes Spargo)

No one likes a show off.
(but well done. I cannot do these)

This is more or less on the anniversary of my 26 January 2023 quiz in the same vein, @Demonstone, for which I now apologise in that I didn't give letter counts! (though, being a specific, unique team, maybe I can be excused?)

Charlie Spargo, in it, was 'Fight, fight!' btw. Can I have him for your no.8, too, then? 😉

Uhm, doesn’t this constitute blurting out? I think TRAB should be disqualified.

No. This was about a revealed answer!

Unless @Demonstone allows him for no.8 (see my edited post). Then I'm gonzo...

If it wasn’t already blurting out… it certainly is now! 😅

@poita has hit the jackpot with two more correct answers.

5.  Harrison Petty (anagram of "ant prehistory" which he analysed)

 8.  Sparrow (box = spar [again!] + fight = row which makes Sparrow)

  • Author

A revered poster who wishes to remain anonymous has found two more.

2.  Christian Petracca (anagram of "A scratchier captain" with the letters irritated).

4.  Tom Fullarton (anagram of "floral mutton" which was chopped up).

  • Author

Kudos to @WalkingCivilWar who was not only the first to identify Tom Sparrow and Harrison Petty, but also supplied the answer for:

9.  Bayley Fritsch (anagram of "yachts briefly" which changed course).

No, no she doesn’t wish to remain anonymous. She is I. I am her.

Killing it, @WalkingCivilWar. I can't keep up!

Maybe there'll be a morsel for me at the end? 1, 3 and 10 remain...

Well done to @Jjrogan who was a second too late with Tom Fullarton but did solve:

10.  Jacob van Rooyen (anagram of "a banjo conveyor" which was shattered).

Let me be the first:

So 5,3,6 then...

#3 has me stumped

that’s not a clue. It actually has me stumped

I'll give you Petracca (you were first) but somebody else got Fullarton before you.

Fair enough.

Incidentally, #3 is really starting to annoy me.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
