dees best 22...

Featured Replies

Here's my 'best' squad, along with the age they turn in 2007:

B: Frawley (19) Carroll (27) Whelan (28)

HB: Petterd (19) Rivers (23) Bell (22)

C: Dunn (20) Bruce (28) Green (26)

HF: Bate (20) Robertson (29) Davey (24)

F: Sylvia (22) Neitz (32) Yze (30)

R: White (30) McLean (21) Johnstone (27)

INT: PJohnson (23) McDonald (31) Bartram (19) Moloney (23)

EM: Jones (19) Godfrey (27) Pickett (30)/Wheatley (26)

There's a big upside when you look at how many young kids are in, or around, our best team. While we've got some obvious holes there's still plenty to look forward to.

PS. I'd really like to see CJ given extended game time this season.

EDIT: As for the rest...

Bizzell (31) - Delist; wrong side of 30 and not a best-18 player

Brown (31) - Delist; wrong side of 30 and not a best-18 player

Ward (30) - Delist? wrong side of 30 and not a best-18 player

*Pickett (30) - Delist?

Holland (30) - Keep; more valuable as depth than Ward/Brown

Ferguson (26) - Delist; doesn't have a role to play

Jamar (24) - Delist; promote Neaves and rookie + recruit more rucks

Miller (24) - Keep; not everyone can be a star but decent depth at least

Warnock (23) - Keep; more upside than Ferg

+ keep our young kids: C Johnson (21), Buckley (20), Newton (20), Garland (19), Neville (19), Weetra (18)

Pickett is too hung over to play emergency.

He is gone after his pathetic showing on the weekend. He was already in doubt prior to that.

Jones not in the 22! :o He should be. How many hard nuts do we have in the midfield?

Yze is playing for his supper and is a proven no show when the heat is on especially in August September, he is interchange at best.

I am concerned about MFC's ability to perform in September if it has any more than one of Robbo, Davey and Yze.

IMO, the following players will be delisted at year end (or retire if they fall on their swords):

Pickett, Holland, Ferguson, Bizzell, Ward/Brown, Jamar.

Neaves you may bring up from rookies and I am unsure of Hughes at this point. Bode goes.

Thank you for saying what I was thinking. Frawley is a complete unknown till he actually steps out a few times for Sandy first. Those of you who are pumping him up so much so early should horn down a bit!

Anyone who saw Frawley at Princes Park V Richmond in March knows he's got what it takes.

He'll be a solid defender who's capable of running the lines.

Will debut in about 3-4 weeks if he's Sandy form is promising.

Agree BBP - I was there, he looked the goods, get excited.

I'm still not convinced on Dunn, IMO will be a lot better in a year or two so I would stick with Miller at CHF for now, this may change once we have a full list and Miller is playing that lad up CHF style which suits him. If he can't perform then he will be out.

My best 22

Whelan Carroll Bell

Petterd Rivers Bruce

Johnstone Mclean Davey

Bate Miller Sylvia

Robbo Neitz Yze

White McDonald Jones

Green PJ Bartram Pickett( if he decides he wants to play) or Moloney

Em Dunn, Godfrey, Frawley

There are only a few side that play three talls up forward most have two and then a midsize tall which Bell can cover.

True drdrake, most sides have two key forwards.

But doesn't Rivers play his best games as a loose defender, or playing on the 'third' tall?

The inclusion of Frawley in your backline will allow this to happen.

Agree that Rivers plays well as that zoning defender but he also plays well one on one and until Frawley plays a few games he is not in the best 22. For all we know he may be a couple of years away from cementing his spot, we hope not but the guy doesn't deserve to be named in my best 22 until he at least shows he can play at this level. He will get his chance this year and hopefully at season end when we are naming our best 22 for 2008 season he will be in it.

Pickett is too hung over to play emergency.

Hence Wheatley listed there - you don't normally have four emergencies :P

Who are you dropping? From that comment I assume Yze. While I really like Jones he still fades out of the game at times and I'd have a fit and firing Moloney just in front of him at the moment. Either way Jones is in the mix, and it's very rare not to have at least one runner sidelined so he'd be likely to get a guernsey.

I think Holland's going to be better value than one of Ward/Brown as we have plenty of running players, but either way they're all depth going forward IMHO. I suppose Miller can cover for injuries a la Holland but Holland's still getting the job done when he plays.

But doesn't Rivers play his best games as a loose defender, or playing on the 'third' tall?

For sure - same role Bizz played quite successfully for us a few years ago.

Isn't that the only game wev'e won this year?

No Miller or Holland thats for sure!

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
