It's time to saddle up the old grey matter and take it for a gallop again, cowboys and cowgirls.

The team below is a far from star-studded line up of players all from the AFL era (post 1989).

What do they have in common (apart from that)?

I've tried to make this teaser easier than recent ones.  Then again, I already know the answer.

Prizes are of an alliterative nature in keeping with today's tortured thread title (another alliteration actually).

First:          Nowt       Neil Crompton

Second:     Nihil        reynolds46

Third:         Nothingburger     Dee Zephyr

As always, answers to me in a PM please, or you may send in your responses written on the back of a $50 note.

B:       Matthew Hogg     Darryl Wakelin     Glenn Manton

H/B:  Shane Morwood     Craig Bolton     Brent Montgomery

C:       Sean Denham     John Blakey     Dean Laidley

H/F:   Peter Wilson     Barry Hall     Tyson Stenglein

F:       Paul Williams     Paul Barnard     Doug Barwick

R:       David Hale     Shaun Grigg     Kym Koster

I/C:    Martin Mattner     Dean Rice     Shane Biggs     Ted Richards

We can eliminate the following incorrect suggestions that the players share a surname with:

  • boxers
  • bushrangers
  • cricketers
  • brain surgeons (or rocket scientists!)

Just like 1964, Neil Crompton has come up with the winner and takes home the gold medal today.

I'll take pity on everybody else and reveal that, as opposed to my usual method, the answer has nothing to do with the players' surnames.

Silver has been won by reynolds46, leaving just third place up for grabs.

Another clue:  today's answer is purely football based.

Dee Zephyr has come home with a late run to claim third.

The answer is that all these players won their first premiership playing for their second club.

Given the general lack of interest in today's quiz, I'll hold over some others I have prepared for a later date.

Thank you to those who did participate.

IMHO it’s not a general lack of interest. It’s that they’re too bloody hard. 🥴

To the placegetters... can you explain how you got to your 'aha' moment? 🤙

WCW, i have never been close with any of the previous brain teaser's - so probably not too hard if i can get it. Probably just luck on my part.

This is how my brain works - looked at the names and immediately thought aha, famous cross dressers!

But based on my past record of success, I thought I'd better have a back up option. So i looked up the first name (Hogg) and read that he had been delisted, went to another club, and won a premiership. Thought that might be a more likely choice than my first option, so I went with it.

WCW, i find all these teasers impossible to solve, but just got lucky this time.

Don’t sell yourself short, NC. That’s not a matter of getting lucky at all. You thought laterally which is how these things are usually worked out. Good job!

I'm interested but I've been out all day.

Me too. Grandkids my excuse. And you were all too quick!

And @Demonstone, I presume including Messrs Brown, Hibberd, Langdon, Lever and May would have made it a real dead giveaway?

Would 5 be a record too, btw? In the AFL era at least? Would Tomlinson have made sure of it?

I bet that is a record, TR-A’B!
Five is substantial. It’s not much under a quarter of the players.

Yes Timothy, those five were excluded so as to not make it too obvious.

Brainteasers are meant to be hard to solve.  That's the point of them.

Hawthorn had seven (!) in 2015 - McEvoy, Lake, Frawley, Gunston, Hale, Gibson and Burgoyne.*

Richmond had six in 2017 - Houli, Prestia, Nankervis, Townsend, Caddy and Grigg, as did Sydney in 2012 - Mumford, Kennedy, Richards, Mattner, Morton and Shaw.

* Strike Burgoyne off that list - he played in Port's flag in 2004 before his Hawthorn career.

Well done! Crikey!

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
