VOTES: Rd 03 vs Essendon

May's total of 13 is interesting given both Naughton and Wright were the opposition best player and he was the direct opponent for most of the game against both.  Both recorded healthy goal tallies too.

I think Max’s game has been underrated - in addition to his hitouts, 22 possessions 12 of which were contested, 6 clearances @ 80% efficiency. Not a bad nights work.

Agree.  The coaches votes will be interesting this week.  Gawn's second half was excellent.

I was tossing up between Gawn and Weideman for my final vote. Gawn's unlucky - I might have been swayed by the idea that Weideman needed an encouragement award.

To be fair to Weideman, though, he really made a difference in the forward line by being a consistent threat. Let himself down with his kicking, but seeing as his history has shown he has struggled more to take marks than convert marks into goals, it was a pleasure to see the way he played.

6  - Gus: he’s criminally underrated by some on here

5 - Clarry: gun, don’t need to say more

4 - Langon: on top of his incredible goal, a typically tireless game

3 - Weid: 4 goals on return with the pressure on, probably should’ve had at least one more with accurate kicking but so happy for him

2 - Bowser: how is such a young player doing such cool things under pressure?

1 - Harmes: not a complete game from him but kicked important goals and had some big moments

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
