This is a thread to discuss Corey Ellison in our Casey Demons side.

I saw earlier in the year that the young 20 year old had a 6 goal game playing up forward before the VFL season was cancelled. Prior to that, my understanding is that he was predominantly playing down back and doing a number on some AFL listed players (both Ben Brown and Sam Weideman were holding down the CHF and FF spots). He looks to have some serious size to him; reminds me of a young Neitz (frame-wise).

I'm curious how he'd develop in the AFL system. Given lack of exposure to the U18 system, does Ellison stand a chance as a late pick or rookie selection? and if in the AFL system do you think he can prosper (does he have the fundemental skills and attitude)? Reading an old post of Knightmare's on BigFooty it looks like he's been highly rated for his contested marking.

Can some of the die-hard Casey followers shed some more light on him please?

Thank you

I get out to Casey quite a bit a nd got to a few games this year. Sadly I can't give you much information @ignition..

His name is familiar and I know I've seen him play, but nothing about him has ever jumped out at me. Where as some of the other names over the years like Fritsch, Lockhart, Tim Smith, Corey Wagner, Keilty, Hutchins, Mohr, Silvagni, McInnerny, Ferreira, Gent have all stood out for one reason or another. Ellison just hasn't done that for me.

@KC from Casey might be a bit more across him then myself however.

I used to live 15 minutes from the Casey ground so got to a few matches, and lots of Dees training. I don't normally watch too many Casey games on TV but I did happen to watch the game where he kicked 5 or 6 goals. I was supper impressed. I had never heard of him before but he impressed me as being strong and sure with ball in hand, in a similar way to Tom Sparrow in the finals series.

But in shape and style he is more Jakovich than Neitz (but nowhere near their talent - just a comparison). I don't know what you can take from one game as a recruiter but he impressed me.

Yes … he was outstanding in that game for Casey out at Werribee.

This is what I wrote in my report on the game:-

Corey Ellison is a local product from Cranbourne who spent a couple of years on the fringes at the Dandenong Stingrays and missed out on playing alongside teammate Toby Bedford in their 2018 premiership. (Ironically, it was Bedford who kicked the first of those five avalanche goals after some exciting play from Jake Bowey turned defence into devastating attack).

After committing to Casey last year, Ellison took to the gym and built himself up during the lockdown and did his preseason with the Demons but the presence of Ben Brown and Weideman meant he was consigned more into defence. He was selected there for this game but, as fate would have it, he was up forward in the third term. Late in the quarter, he managed two quick goals and with the game free and open at last, he added another three in the final term to make it six for the game to match his six goal haul for Cranbourne on Anzac Eve which gained the high flyer his VFL debut on a Thursday night against North Melbourne back at the end of April.”

The problem from my perspective is that in judging the draft worthiness of players, one or two games aren’t necessarily enough in reaching any conclusions. Unfortunately, the season came to a fairly abrupt end a couple of weeks later and Ellison was unable to show that he’s capable of playing like that on a regular basis.

I like him, still young with some growth left, he knows where to run, has good hands and goal awareness as evidenced from his 6 goals. Not out of the question as a rookie.

I remember thinking at the time there was a bit of 'right time, right place' and 'got on the end of a few'. See what you think...

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. When he’s on song, he’s unstoppable but he did blot his copybook with a three week suspension in the final round. 2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
