'The relapse has been creeping in for weeks.' You mean, inย  the weeks we beat the Bulldogs and Brisbane? Some crazy finger-pointing after a disappointing loss going on here.

Go back and watch those games. They do it in there too, but on a smaller scale. This week was new level. It was an observation that is worrying that they have started reverting back to old habits.

I noticed Tom Sparrow did it a couple of times also and got pinged. This is the kind of [censored] that rubs onto the younger players.

If I see it again against the bombers then coaching staff have done nothing to rectify the situation.ย

And Viney does it a lot too, when you watch the best passages of play itโ€™s when we take the first optionย on instinct.

It is an old cricket saying, that sometime our biggest strength is our greatest weakness.

It is well worth noting that Lever is a terrific intercept player. The problem thewre is that he is not a good 1 on 1 palyer and yesterday exemplified that. Collingwood used short low disposals to move into the fwd line and our defence were waiting for the ball to be in the air.

Secondly Clarrie and Trac are sensational; footballers, but they were up against Pendlebury , Sidebottonm & De Goeyย ย  on a day out. However they did not lose the number count, but the quality . As a result our forward line were chasing "bombs" and did not have a real chance.ย  Plus Maynard was briliant yesterday.

We need to learn from that.

The manner of the loss is not unfamiliar to us Red. We've seen this movie before.

No point dwelling on it though.ย We have the chance to right the ship against Essendon. I believe we will perform much better and collect the 4 points

Taking the first option is definitely a factor.

Decision making is another thing. We have been pretty good at decision making most of this season so far but it was poor against Collingwood.

After a few days off with the bye and perhaps a good hard look at themselves I hope the Demons players will respond. We definitely did not play "the Melbourne way" against Collingwood and I hope we learn from that. Playing at the SCG was a mistake in hindsight as we couldn't play the way we would regularly play and zone off on a larger ground. Collingwood was certainly fired up with the emotion of their coach Nathan Buckley resigning and that definitely worked in their favour too.

It will be a tough challenge against an improving Essendon side. No more drinking our own bath water if we wish to have a top 2 finish!

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics youโ€™d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
