Did the job on Hogan though.

Hogan had a shocker. He fumbled about 7-8 marks and slipped over many times and gave away the ill disciplined 50 penalty.  Not great conditions but others did mark the footy ok. Hogan only had one good moment in the last minute.  Tomlinson was not terrible but had no influence or sight on the game.

Having watched the game at length now, I'm happy to go with:

6 Rivers - yes he's a kid but he really tried to take us forward all night. If only he converted his two shots.

5 Gawn - Yes he was involved in two of their goals but still a massive presence which we all tend to underrate.

4 Viney - our hardest worker, but like his midfield colleagues missed targets so his intensity, not his influence, gets him these votes.

3 Fritsch - our cleanest marker on the night and hit more targets than others.

2 May - how many did Taberner kick? Our three talls down back kept their three forwards goalless.  May did more offense work than Lever and Tommo, hence his votes.

1 Petracca - brilliant third term but unlike his hot spell mid-season, struggled to be clean with his disposal in the conditions.

6. Gawn - again comprehensively beat his opponents, some big marks on a terrible night for marking.

5. Viney - an excellent effort, with some effectiveness.

4. Rivers - a steady and sometimes brilliant game. A big future for this lad.

3. Fritsch - wish he went a bit harder but he is a genuine talent.

2. May - although not up to his recent high standards he did his job and kept the Freo key forwards quiet.

1. Petracca - toiled hard and kept himself in the game.

I have re watched the game and Gawn made a couple of bad blues but he is held up to such a high standard.  If any other ruck in the league played that game in those conditions they'd be lauded.  Against a couple of decent opponents too. Very impressed with Rivers.  I think he beats out Jackson and Pickett as our best first year player.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
