Salem was garbage last night. The writer must have like his bleached hair because he literally did nothing all night.

Agreed. Salem has disappointed me again. He should be our quarterback.  They even talk about him potentially rotating through the middle.  He may have done kicking efficiency but it’s mainly 15metre kicks sideways.  There is no precision in forward delivery or intensity.

Probably too late to cast votes for Thursday's game and not really a game that casting votes for anyone much was  palatable, but I would have had Steven May right up there, along with Max and probably Lockhart in there somewhere.

The other I'd probably consider putting in the votes somewhere is Melksham, I think he has been starting to exert good influence in games over the past two weeks.

After somewhat shaky starts, where some questioned their worth I think both Lockhart and Steve May have been showing their quality and value to the team over the past couple of weeks in particular.

6 - Oscar - You knew from the first play when he ducked back behind his man to allow Georgiades space to run forward that this was his night. The comical stuff from the slowest player in the league continued when he avoided making a play just outside the goalsquare  in the third term.

5 Pickett - Goody loves this guy and it's not hard to see why. Two goals in six games since the break - the same as Cody Weightman - except that's right, Cody was rested. Why. Perhaps Goody could ask Bevo why it's best to temper your excitement with a new toy.

4 Jackson - Action Jackson was everywhere and nowhere. Another kid who needed a break. But no we'll play him against the top side for his development.

3 Oliver - A week off via the tribunal will deprive all of us his exquisite kicking skills and also his favourite game of setting up a mate with a 2m handball. Best thing for him at moment is to sit up in the coaches box and see how a game flows.

2 Brayshaw - The world's best wingman with amazing leg-speed. No wonder the coach won't play him in the middle.

1 Hannan -  Another who needed a break after a fumbly game against Brissy, but go figure. Let's play him again.

While these guys were all eye-catching, the blame falls way more on the coach for not having read the signs that a four-day break might actually require some changes with fresh players.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
