Peter Ryan who reported it is not an ambulance chaser so I would take the report as being right. He's no Tom Browne

A question, is it just the indigenous players that have to get this particular vaccination?

I know an issue blew up earlier in the NRL about players needing to have a flu shot before they were able to play in Qld...

Sure, but I've read one article that says players are "understood to be shocked" and another that says they've "been left perplexed", so it seems like the judgment of the reaction is being editorialized.

It is just the Indigenous players being asked to get it. As stated, Indigenous Aussies have some of the highest rates of infection in the world for pneumonia and QLD already has a mandatory vaccine program for just that specific thing already.

I can understand it's poor by the AFL if they haven't made note of it in the plans put forward, but I don't know, to me getting a vaccination isn't exactly a big deal and not worth the outrage the media is trying to create.

pneumococcal is different to pneumonia.  The age group of indigenous players falls outside those stipulated in the national immunisation program for pneumococcal.

All AFL players must have the flu vaccine to enter Qld.  The pneumococcal vaccine requirement applies only to indigenous players.

The issue isn't that players were 'shocked', 'perplexed', it is that the AFL agreed to a vaccine requirement for a particular group of players but neglected to tell players, their rep AFLPA or include it in the player protocols.

Pneumococcal can cause pneumonia. Sure, it's different in a way, but they're linked.

The rate of pneumococcal is 6–7 times higher in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

I agree the communication part of it is very poor, but I struggle to see how it's 'discrimination' given the science and the existing related laws already in place in QLD.

Edit - I reckon you may find in the end there's more to this story anyway. There's already conflicting reports about it with the QLD Government saying the vaccination was never a requirement put forward by them.

This is the front page of today's West Australian, the perfect example of how Aboriginal people are often treated differently than the rest of us in the criminal justice system.

Try and imagine your 86-year-old dementia-suffering grandmother going to jail for spraying a neighbour with a garden hose. You can't.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"An Aboriginal grandmother with dementia spent nearly a week in a maximum-security prison after spraying her neighbour with a garden hose, in a shocking case that has WA Attorney General John Quigley questioning whether she would have been incarcerated if she were white.

"The 86-year-old was charged with breaching a 'misconduct restraining order' in April after allegedly spraying her neighbour with water from a garden hose and swearing at her.

"In Rockingham Magistrates Court she was remanded for 8 days at Maleluca maximum-security prison and spent 6 days behind bars before Legal Aid was able to free her.

" 'I am deeply concerned that a woman in her 80's with dementia was held in prison cells for almost a week without the option of bail,' Mr Quigley said.

" 'I have to ask myself whether an elderly white woman with dementia from a wealthy suburb would have found herself in prison in such circumstances."

Wow.  How many people with decision-making power must have interacted with that along the way without stopping and thinking 'hang on a minute?'

I'm going to scratch my nails down the window and say 'At least now it is being reported like it is a problem'.

And relating it to the topic -

"She's not an elderly lady with dementia, she's just an ***"

"He's not a skillful half-forward completing an amazing comeback nobody thought possible, he's just an ***"

Hopefully when Harley is a crabby 86 and has dementia, it'll be different.

What a fantastic post, you've clearly articulated why any whinging about racism or oppression by white people is utterly ludicrous. Being called names doesn't hold a candle to institutional discrimination, oppression and in a lot of cases, genocide.

Feel compelled to respond to the emoji avalanche. I wasn't complaining or arguing that the kind of racism I experience was somehow equivalent to that suffered by black Americans or indigenous Australians. The point I was making is that racism in not exclusively practiced by white people. Where I live one tiny ethnicity discriminates against all others and not equally, and they are not white.
