Mid Season Trade Period Idea Scrapped

Featured Replies

The AFL has been touting a mid-season trade period after the success of this year’s mid-season draft, but that has been scrapped in favour of a window to open before Round 1.

“The mid-season trade period is going to become the pre-season trade,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“There’ll be a 48 to 72-hour window that will open just before the season, I’m not exactly sure what the dates are going to be, but there will be a window that opens when those trades can occur.

So many rule changes and changes in general yet they can't even get the umpiring or look of the game right, Gil must go, the current standard is the worst I've ever seen. This will just make it more uneven IMO.

Early season trade period

My cynical read of this 'The AFL is mindful of the enormous interest generated when players move clubs – web traffic is enormous in the major media outlets and on the AFL’s website during the trading period – and has clearly been keen to open this up further, as happens in American sports'  is that the AFL wants to generate 'click bait' and copy yet another element of US sports.  All under the guise of more player movement!

My practical view is:

  • not much changes from the usual trade period in October to this proposed presason trade period in February.
  • no games played so no exposed form.
  • there will be no draft picks to trade just players.
  • there is more than enough happening in February to keep fans engaged:  Preseason, draftee progress, JLT games etc etc.
  • another daft idea that diverts attention from the AFLW.

What's more clubs have until mid March to top up their lists with 'rookie drafts' if they have list spots, with players who were previously on a list or a previous draft.  As we did with Sparrow Lockhart.

Ridiculous idea!!

We took Sparrow in the Draft as a normal pick.

Thanks, I meant Lockhart.  Will correct post.

As a player it would be awesome training with your team all summer only to be traded on the eve of season commencing!

Another brilliant idea from the AFL! *sarcasm meter has exploded*

If you cant trade picks then it will never work. Whens the last time teams just traded players straight up?

Edit: To answer my own question. WC & Syd Lewis Jetta for Callum Sinclair in 2015.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

The Demons are back at the MCG for the second week in a row. They face the Suns off a 15 day break without their prized recruit and former Demon champion Christian Petracca. This will be a massive test for the Demons who will be facing a genuine Premiership contender. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
