I think this ia a joke of an idea. What if a boundary umpire, a goal umpire and the field umpire all want to pay a different free kick at the same time? Which fluro maggot's umpire's decision will stand? Don't we have enough problems with different umpires interpreting the same thing differently without adding 6 more?

No problems from my point of view. It's like the third umpire in cricket to the extent that it's an effort to get umpires to make better decisions.

I was thinking they could just form a committee with all 9 to discuss it, so the goal umpire at the opposite end of the ground could trot down and put in his 8 cents worth in. They seem to like to have group pow-wows about decisions and get input from someone who wasn't in the same postcode as the play.

Point taken Fan, bu the third umpire in cricket is only there and used for when the central umpires are unsure what the correct decision is.

Anyway I don't think its too bad an idea. I used to boundary umpire country football and you could easily pick frees, often before the field umpire had called it. Also get a different view of the contest which may see things that the central umpires miss.

It would be worth it just to see that umpire run backwards to the opposite end of the ground.

I don't have a problem with having all 9 umpires able to pay free kicks but would prefer it to be trialled during the practice matches rather than a once off in a NAB cup match. Not only would it give them a much better idea if it would work due the number of games they can use it in, there would be no major downside if an umpire stuffed up. The NAB cup should mean a little more this season due the $1 million prize up for grabs for winning it.

So instead of getting three different interpretations of the rules during a game we're going to get nine.

I’ve wondered for years how goal umpires could see infringements right in front of them that the field umpire can’t see and had no way of doing anything about it. You could argue that’s part of the skill of the game – to hide it from the field umpire. I also wondered if the umpires talk to each other during the breaks and say “You missed a big stretch of the jumper there” or whatever. Hey Dalrot, is that what happens?

at least 3 bad decisions were missed, neitz's tackle in the first quarter, robbos mark near the boundary and chris Johnstons( must have had a brain fade typing sullivan) super goal(which could get fixed), might as well have 90 umpires

The umpires looked so confused at times. And to make it worse, when a decision was reversed, they didn't hold up play to allow Melbourne players to get back on their men.

Umpiring awareness was appalling tonight - they allowed advantages they shouldn't have, and disallowed others they should. Actual decision making was quite good however.

Whether it be 3 umpires, 9 or 17, they'll still make mistakes.

The missed super-goal was clear evidence that a cricket-style third umpire would be far more useful than 9 umpires.

At least the hands in the back rule wasn't over-umpired, which was great, but it kills me when an umpire on the other side of the ground runs in to give a call.
