Long time viewer, First time poster. Long time Demon fan.

Anyway the reason why I am writing is that I am having great pleasure winding an obsessed Cats fan up about the [censored] and Bomber T and I am looking for some more ideas or angles to get under his skin.

I am also trying to compare Neale v Bomber in the coaching stakes. Both been under Sheedy's wing, both been at clubs for a long time but with no ultimate success, both have roughly the same win loss record. So how do these two stack up?

Apart from Essendon, we've played in more finals than any other Victorian team since 2000.

Therefore, and quite convincingly so, Daniher > Thompson.

Edit: We also don't have the luxury of having the best home ground advantage in the league!

Coaches who have been in the game for over 7 years should only be assessed by premierships...that is all. Time may be running out for Bomber and ND.

I think Thompson had his chances for a premiership with the Cats in 2004/5 and missed it. Not so sure that they have what it takes now.

Malthouse took an average Collingwood list to two consecutive Grand Finals (which were against one of the best teams in recent history) and Pagan has had some of the worst off-field dramas, which you admit are detrimental to a side's on-field performance.

Hasn't Daniher got the record for most number of years coaching the same club without tasting premiership success?

Don't be too quick to judge Bomber T poorly, our record is not great either.

Yeah I do. They have premierships to boast, Daniher has none. Most people would only look at premierships when assessing whether a coach is good or not.

Pagan was the coach of the "team of the 1990's". ALthough he's had a shocking stint with Carlton, he'll be listed as a 2 time premiership coach on the record books - therefore making him a good coach.

Malthouse was the coach of a team who made the finals in every single season of the 1990's, 2 premierships and 2 losing grand finals (Collingwood) - therefore making him a good coach.

I realise the current board have a high opinion of Daniher, likewise the more intelligent posters around here. But if ND hasn't achieved a premiership before his career is over - why should he be considered a good coach?

Getting to the finals is great, but ND's record in finals series has been as ordinary as Aaron Davey's September performances of late.

I reckon Nealey is a good coach. But your comment is right. Anything less than a prelim. appearance this year and he should probably step aside.

As for Bomber, as plenty have recognised here - his comments after King mid-air kicked Jeff White in the face were disgraceful. He is a winging, excuse making turnip.

Very well said, there are things i like about ND and others i dont, some of our players could have been super stars at other clubs based on when recruited and so on but at Melbourne, we dont have genuine superstars (McLean and Davey aside) our team hasnt been able to be consistantly good for some time, winning finals or not.

We have a 6 week stint, a few losses, 6 weeks a few losses and then 5 - 6 losses when it counts.

I remember an on the couch episode when Sheedy was interviewed and they asked if ND would win a Premiership?, he said yes. They said with Melbourne? he said, 'Neale will win a Premiership' when they asked why he wouldnt say with Melbourne, he said nothing and went dead

silent - I am still convinced the Dons will recruit him when Sheedy retires.

Anyway, who cares...... um.......

Grand Final this year should be minimum, there is no disgrace losing a close final either, a good final (Demons and Dons a few years back great example) its the heart and the determination, the sweat and grit that any supporter wants to see. Mind you a Grand Final would blow my mind too.................

I guess my concern with Melbourne, is knowing what the can produce is some of the best football anyone can produce, but when they are off, they stink.

As they say in business, if it keeps going wrong, look at the constant, it generally has a part to play. In this case, the constant to me is the head coach, our assistant coaches last 1 - 3 years some of them, so cant blame them and the team is constantly changing so, i give him 1 more year, 2007 ND is the year you have been waiting for.

Demons finish 4th and take out 4th on ladder after finals. Win first final, have a break, lose second in a thriller at home.

That would be an awesome way for 2007 bar a Premiership, and i can feel it in my waters.

Neale's time is now. We have the best group of players I've seen at Melbourne, although Neitz and Whitey can't last much longer thanks to CAC and his recruiting team we do have potential replacements and we have the most stable club we have been for decades.

Bomber's cats blew a premiership 2 years ago and they are now pretty unstable down there.

Personality wise Neale has grown into the Job- prior to 2003 he was media shy now he is a bit of a personality, whereas Bomber has gone the otherway.

As far as good coaches I think Northey was one of the best going around and he did'nt win a premiership because he just didn't have the cattle but he certainly got the best out of them.

We traded Grgic and Pick 14 (plus another third round pick I think), for Bizzell and pick 53.

Pick 53 was used to draft Brad Miller.

Good point Clint, i agree.

I am also of the belief that coaches, just like any other profession, can lose form so to speak with age. Just like a footballer whose best years might be 25-31 a coaches best years might be 40-55 (for example) after that they potentially start to decline. Maybe the game goes past them, they lose touch with new methods, not sure exactly but I think statistics might back this up. Malthouse and Pagan are good examples although with regard to Pagan ll sorts of mitigating circumstances abode.

I'm not sure if this is what you were referring to, but if it was, it's the aspect of coach recruitment that I can't wrap my head around.

Did you mean that the reason each coach didn't enjoy the same success at later clubs as they did in earlier ones was that the clubs (pies and blues) are inherently sicker than the earlier ones (WC and roos of 90s)? Applying that to our current situation, we have an ok coach who hasn't won flags, but has gotten us to 6 finals series out of 9, and a GF. Is this the best any "ok" coach could do at MFC? We're in a better position now in the league, thanks at least in part to Neale and the squad. So what do we do if we only make the finals again this year? If we get rid of Neale, what if we end up with another Balme situation? Does Neale's role in building this team mean he deserves a crack at 2008? If he went on to Essendon where he has huge sums of cash and what will, by then, be a good young team coming through, what if does some damage to us? The mind boggles. IMO, I want to see Neita's last 2 big years (assuming of course that he retires at the end of 2008) coached by Neale. He deserves the chance to bring these older guys to the end of their careers with their best chance at glory, I reckon. He's not been a brilliant coach (yet) but he's been a good one.
