Still nothing from all those I have written to.

i just asked for one study showing non-drinkers have a mortality rate even equal to heavy drinkers.

They just don't seem to exist, despite extensive studies.

I've finally been given a study by Hart et al showing an increased mortality rate for drinkers.

Of the 1,833 non drinkers in the study, 834 of them smoked. WTF? I know some teetotallers but I don't know any that smoke. Was does in the 70's but that seems incredible to me.

Hey Wrecker, found these for you:

http://www.science20.com/news_articles/alcoholism_knocks_off_an_average_76_years_of_life_and_leads_to_27_more_illnesses-154523

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/10/121016163134.htm

** Just through googling, I have no opinion on this one way or the other, just trying to help find studies as you requested. I have not examined any of these articles or their sources.

Most stuff I found though seems to support your original contention that alcohol drinkers outlive abstainers.

This I found interesting, in a study that supported the notion that drinkers outlive non drinkers:

For example, prospective studies of men and women in Denmark (, ) and the United States () and men in France () and the Netherlands () reported that, in contrast to consumption of other alcoholic beverages, only wine consumption was associated with lower total mortality.

So unfortunately it looks like it might not be clear cut. You might need to do further digging into the type of drink as well!

Best of luck mate.

We don't sip by the way, in Fitzroy at least. We guzzle and it's not Chardonnay neither!

Not sure of the definition of a hipster. I don't have a beard or tattoes but I do guzzle coffee in the morning after my trip to the gym and a Shiraz, Malbec or perhaps a Merlot later in the evening. Usually means I hit the deck quite early At night.

Not hipster then. Not sure what category you fit it but I probably fall in it with you.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
