Love the way the Orange Buffoon has been boasting all year how brilliant he's been for the financial markets: "a beautiful set of figures".

Not so boastful today.

One day of trading is just that.

All politicians take undeserved credit and get undeserved blame when economic cycles and past policy decisions are the likely cause.

Trump no different here.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never seen a politician carry on so boastfully about a rise in the economic cycle. You'd think he was out there himself, lifting the bricks and troweling the mortar.

Re Ethan's comment, I'm not blaming or praising Trump for the fluctuations in the economy, I'm just saying he looks like a jerk for all the boasting he's been doing about the upswings. From what I can see, all he's done is what Republicans always do - lower taxes for rich people (including himself). Maybe that affects the stock market, maybe it doesn't. I dunno (although there was an article by Peter Martin in yesterday's Age suggesting that the tax cuts were partly responsible for the crash - stuffed if I could understand half of what he was talking about, though)

Trump is an embarrassment to America dont get me wrong but i see him and corbyn and now shorten as symptoms of a deeper malaise within western political systems.

Politics and policy has been replaced with market segmentation and identity politics. I blame the dumb arse voter who is too lazy to look beyond the headlines and shock jocks

Politicians like trump and shorten will adopt a new position like changing jackets.

Corbyn at least is the trotskyist he always was (his positions on exiting eu fit the trump shorten mold).

Part of the appeal of tony abbott pauline and co to a narrow constituency of churchy rednecks is they are at least authentic in tone and consistent in their current roles

Do you think he will spend the rest of his term saying how well he handled the crisis like Rudd did?

Do you think all the morons who claimed Trump’s pro-business stock market surge was really Obama’s legacy, will blame Obama for the correction?

Heard it on the news, but I don't get it. A bunch of Republican congressmen reckon the investigation into Russian involvement in the election is biased. Where's the surprise in that? Of course they think that.

No sympathy for Bill - he should have got the sack for being a bad liar - but why do you think Hillary's going to gaol?

Drain the swamp? Boy, have you been sucked in. Trump is the swamp.

Ok. So it’s clear that the democrats (and originally the republicans) paid for a dossier on Trump from a 3rd party. Dossier comes back and is obviously widely innacurate. Obama gets authority to fully monitor a staffer of Trump based on false claims he had paid for without disclosing that at the application stage.

Stinks to high hell.

The third party being Russian. The question is, did Hillary know the dossier was fraudulent before submitting it to the FBI/DOJ to assist with obtaining the phone tap?

So much hyperbole, exaggeration and just plain inaccuracy in two little sentences. And no, I won't bite to your next reply   - "tell me where I  am wrong" - I'd rather go with  "Fact checking - zero".

NB do you believe the declassified four-page memo to be false or just inaccurate? If so what are you basing it on?

If he had handled a crisis like Rudd did, he'd be entitled to.

“With regard to the House Intelligence Committee’s memorandum, the FBI was provided a limited opportunity to review this memo the day before the committee voted to release it,” the statement said. “As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.”

You have also got to ask yourself the question - a Republican "opinion piece" is released however the Democrat rebuttal was not allowed to be released. I don't have a clue as to the accuracy of the memo but it gives you pause to think that a heavily politicised committee allows a Republican majority opinion to be released by won't allow a Democrat rebuttal ? Neither should be released if there is not consensus or both.

I just am amused when Wrecker writes with authority that "it is clear". What is clear is nothing is clear.

There is such blood lust in American politics both internally and in reporting that I take the view that most issues either Republican or Democrat - read everything from both sides of the political divide and the truth probably lies somewhere in between.

The only thing that's clear to me is that the elites (and I mean the real ones, not The Mad Monk's imagined ones) always find a way to protect their interests.

The only thing that is clear to me is all sides of politics are ruled by self preservation with few exceptions and corruption is rife from the far right to the far left and all points in between. Nothing is ever clear and we, the great unwashed, only get to see the veneer.

I am not convinced that Trump is any more or less corrupt or inept than any past administration. The difference from me is he and his administration are either not smart enough or don't care enough ( or both)  to try and disguise it. It has been a game for me of trying to "uncover" when pollies are contradicting past stances, shifting positions or outright lying. I want my pollies to at least it a little difficult  -  a sport. Trump doesn't care enough to do this.

The danger with that though is you start to normalise extremism. This false equivalence is what gave us "but the emails".

I don't know about normalising extremism but Trump has certainly gone a long way to normalising the bizarre. ( "Oh that's just Trump).

I dislike equivalence to downplay or justify behaviours period. This idea that  the impact of doing something abhorrent is somewhat lessened because the other side did the same thing just doesn't sit.

I was speaking generally when saying  that no side of politics , either in the US or here is immune from corruption and I do believe that whilst there is centre of the road reporting, there is also a lot of reporting that has left or right bias.

You are right in one sense that behaviours are being compared when there is no equivalency at all. The clashes in Birmingham to me being a perfect example.

Another school shooting today. Full/Semi automatic involved.

How many is it going to take for changes to be made. I think I read this morning that it’s the 14th mass shooting in the states this year.

edit: it’s the 18th shooting in a SCHOOL this year. Just sad.

Haha, ok so did the democrats pay for a dossier on Trump? Fact check - 1 from 1. Now dodge it knowing the facts lie with what I said or tell me where I am wrong.

Wrong thread. Perhaps gun control should go down as another great failing of the Obama presidency.

It’s now got nothing to do with Obama’s term.

Ya main man gun loving Trump has now deflected the issue and put it all down to mental issues.

Guns don’t kill people, people kill people....oorah, make America great again.

If it wasn't so sad I would have laughed at what Trump said. He Just turned another left wing argument on its head.

The equally irrational left argument after another terrorist attack is... It wasn't another Islamic terrorist it was just a mental health problem.

The unfortunate situation is, mental health or not, the Americans have a massive gun control problem and Islamic terrorism problem.

On gun control they need baby steps. Don't deny the right to bare arms but make it more difficult and regulated.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
