2016 Player Review - # 45 Matt Jones

Displayed some good form in the very early part of the season but injury saw him out and back in the VFL on his return. Had some opportunities but failed to hold his place in the face of opposition from the younger breed of players at the club and has now been delisted.

Clearly not a long term player at almost 29 years old, but was handy for the most part. I would have dropped off 3 or 4 others before him, but we do have a number of similar types on the list.

Still think his delisting was harsh. Also injury this year did not help him. He also had pace and outside run. Had no trouble getting the ball but let down by disposal. Delisting reflects the harsh reality of AFL. Disappointing for the player given his contribution over the last few seasons.

Anyone who has seen that photo of him as a chubby youngster will know that Matt Jones got pretty much everything he could out of himself. I could have seen us keep him on for depth, but I suppose it's a metric of where we are and where we're going that we have better prospects than him.

Like Jordie McK, Matt always put in his best efforts, but sadly not quite up to it and bypassed by too many others. No longer even depth, going forward.

Thaks for your efforts Matt

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
