Hmmm....no Santos again. The issue must be lingering, still shaping up as a very good race. Quality fields assembled in Melbourne and Sydney.

That's a shame DZ ... was looking forward to Santos running.

The fields are good ... not quite as good as last week but nonetheless,  at least 7 or 8 good stakes races with nearly all of them being good betting races.

Nature Strip is auditioning for the 'Everest' (again) whilst Trapeze Artist,  The Autumn Sun & Champagne Cuddles resume.  And Bonneval is back after a long lay-off.

And we've hit the 100th page for the thread ... well done to all !

Now for the double-century!

Going early with the ‘ Best Bet’ fellas. Busy couple of days coming up.

Mooney Valley Race 1

Number 2 : Naantali  TAB Odds: $2.60

An update on Santos.

Decided not run the horse in a hot field first up. Santos had an exhibition gallop against Siege Of Quebec in between races last week at Randwick. He did finish about a head behind the other runner but his last 600m was faster than Redzel’s on the day. I believe they have changed their strategy on how to attack the Spring.

Yes indeed Macca, and well done to all contributors over a relatively short period of time as we raise our collective bat to the grandstand to our maiden century.

Cheers Macca, just got to the TAB and always a wise choice to look in this thread first.

We sit back and enjoy the races, rugby and footy today.

Wadda is having his recovery session from last night in the bay as we speak Macca.

A quick text to him and he has nominated his substitute best @Morphetville.

Naantali left a bit flat footed around the home turn. Still some good value with the remaining picks.

'Home of the Brave' wins well ... track conditions a bit questionable but the horse looks the goods and beat home some very likely types.

Firmed into $17 for the Everest and with 2 slots left,  Home of the Brave might get snapped up.

Nature Strip in a minute Macca.  Needs a slot.

Course record for the horse so Houtzen running a close up 2nd was no slight on Nature Strip.  Decent gap to Shoals and then another decent gap to Viridine.

It gets an Everest slot on the back of the course record you'd reckon DZ.  There aren't too many other candidates anyway apart from 'Home of the Brave'  and the American horse 'Bound for Nowhere'

And Magic Consol wins the other feature event at the Valley ... and therefore gains automatic entry for the Cox Plate.  Not bad for a 9YO!

Not sure the connections will bother but 2nd carries around $1Million whilst 3rd earns $500k in the Cox Plate so finishing behind Winx is not always a bad result.

It was a difficult day in terms of trying to find a winner that wasn't at prohibitive odds today.  Landed one decent trifecta but went awfully close with 3 or 4 others ?

It was that kind of day and The Autumn Sun was a good thing beaten as well.

Nothing available from the Valley but you can go to Racing.com/Moonee Valley to view any of the replays from yesterday.

But here's The 'Run To The Rose' from Rosehill yesterday and the G1 Sprint from Haydock (UK) raced overnight.

Nature Strip to win Everest slot after McEwen Stakes victory

Quote

It is understood slot-holder Australian Turf Club, Nature Strip’s syndicate of owners and trainer Darren Weir have reached an agreement to start the sprinter in the world’s richest turf race at Royal Randwick on October 13.

Home Of The Brave has emerged as a candidate for the final Everest slot with the Godolphin sprinter firming from $51 to $13.

63 first acceptors for the Cox Plate and it is being reported than 9 of the acceptors are overseas horses but I counted 37.  Am I missing something?

If horses are here for a while do we now count them as Aussie horses?  And are the NZ horses now counted as Aussie horses as well?  I remember a time when the NZ horses were regarded as the 'Raiders'.

It should be noted that it doesn't bother me much at all where the horses come from although I do reckon there should be some sort of limit otherwise we may end up with not much representation at all ... we're mainly breeding sprinter/milers these days.  Top quality too but there's a dearth of 2000m+ quality Australian bred horses (Winx and about 10-12 others aside)

Here are the 63 first acceptors

Some top fields engaged for Saturday which includes Winx running around in the George Main Stakes   A F4 with Winx winning is an obvious option although there are only the 8 runners so an outright 2nd could be the go as well.  Unforgotten & Le Romain are likely candidates although Egg Tart & Ace High will be running on you'd reckon.

Anyway,  in terms of good betting races,  I've marked the following 5 in order for the weekend ...

The Group 3 Newcastle Cup is being raced on Friday as well ... the race following the Cup is a decent affair also (Cameron Hcp  G3)  Good field's in both races.

Looms as a great day for racing Macca. Wadda has ventured overseas so the best bets could be limited this week.

Santos is set to resume on Saturday. $3.60 second pick with TAB. Connections have targeted a big race in Melbourne for the spring.

Agree with you on Unforgotten and Le Romain, you’d think one of those two will fill second spot.

I might end up going 1 - 4 - 4 - 4 DZ as I reckon Egg Tart & Ace High can get to at least 3rd.  The Winx race last time threw up an unlikely 2nd placegetter and that F4 paid just under $3k!  A  1 - 4 - 4 -4  F4 costs the same as a box 4 trifecta.  If I was to go one-out for 2nd I'd choose 'Unforgotten'.  It's a good horse.

And I've marked Santos on top as well but 'Neutrality' and the smoky 'Prophet's Thumb' might run Santos close.  I'll probably do a 3 - 5 - 5 trifecta on the race and will include 'Charge' in the placegetters as well.

At this time of year I up the ante a bit but am still quite fussy with the sort of race I invest into ... the Santos race & race 3 at Flemington ('The Sofitel' formerly known as the 'Tontonan Stakes') are the only early races that I'm interested in.

And the Makybe Diva Stakes has got a crack field which includes the grey from the West 'Pounamu' ... the field looks way too tough but the wide expanses of Flemington might suit.  There will be easier races for the horse of course.  Interested to see how it goes,  all the same.

Flemington Race 3 No.5 Cliff's Edge - Place $3.20 (win showing $14.00)

Getting back to it's right distance after starting off its campaign over 1100m 2 weeks ago ... back in February ran 2 sizzling times with a win & a 2nd in two Group 3 races over 1200m & 1400m.  Hutchy's best bet of the day as well (to win) but the place dividend is decent enough.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
