A Day at the Races

Vega:

Vega is the 5th brightest star in the night sky and at only 25 light years away is one of the brightest stars in our neighborhood. Vega has been extensively studied by astronomers and is regarded by many as the most important star in the sky next to the sun. Some believe it may be the most likely place to find life outside our solar system. In 12000 BC it was the North Pole Star. In Alaska, Canada and most of Europe Vega never sets. Unlike other stars, it has a unique bluish-white color.

Based on an observed excess emission of infrared radiation, likely to be the result of collisions between objects in an orbiting debris field, Vega appears to have a disk of dust. Stars that display an infrared excess due to dust emission are termed Vega-like stars.

.....so, now you know why its called Vega Magic.  :)

Best Bet:

Rosehill Race 5 No 1 Performer $3.70

I know its a little early but ive had a good look, and with Santos and the other one out, Performer is standing out i reckon. Won at track and distance and good price, just hang on Bowman!

Here are the 6 Stakes races to be run on Saturday to keep an eye out for ... Wadda's best bet 'Performer' is running around in the feature race at Rosehill (Race 5) whilst we'll get to look at Avilius,  Brutal & Multaja in the other bigger events.

And there are a good field of sprinters assembled in the Carlyon Cup @ Moonee Valley.

But the import from the UK Avilius is my big watch in the Premier's Cup (Rosehill Race 7) ... too short for a best bet but could be an inclusion in a running double, multi or treble.  Exceptionally impressive first time up last start.  Went whoosho and it was done.

Best Bet ...

Rosehill Race 2 No.4 Impavido $5.50

I like its chances in this small field.  Going for an early collect and Ron Dufficy from Sky Racing has it on top as well.  Tim Clark on board and he's in decent form.

Psssst: all the other horses are running at Rosehill, so it should [censored] it in. :)

Thats an interesting one Macca, didnt see that last time it ran. Is it being set for the Cups? $1.85 atm is ok for a leg in a multi.

Ha!  I'm forever getting those 2 courses mixed up Wadda - same deal for Ascot & Belmont in the West.

I'm all-in on trifecta's at the weekend ... can't find a standout winner at the Valley in 9 races!  Even the Get-on crew were struggling.  The fields are strong though so finding the 2-5-5 & 3-5-5 combinations was quite an easy exercise.

Rosehill is much the same for the majority of races.  Some strong fields there as well.  Should be a really good days racing at both venues.

Sorry, but i had to call it. For a second there i thought, wow racing at both Sydney venues!

Yeah thats really why i took the horse i did just couldnt find anything else. Although when in doubt there is always Jamie Kah in Adelaide. Seriously every 2nd ride shes winning. Look for a Weir/Kah combo perhaps.

Here's the replay of Avilius winning 3 weeks ago (you'll have to log on to view)

It might be being set for the Epsom Hcp which is run on GF Day (when we win our 13th flag)

Great thanks!.......its not that far off the mark if they bring the sort of attitude they did last week.

I read Chautauqua is having a barrier trial at Rosehill in between races. If the horse jumps it could receive the loudest roar of the day. Fingers crossed.

Will they be using any C4 behind the stalls DZ?

Scott who?

In other news ... click on this link to view the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes run at York on Wednesday.

A crack field of 8 were engaged in the race - the 'Creme de la Creme' of Europe in a 2000m classic.  2 or 3 of the runners may end up in Australia this Spring although we know that Benbatl is definitely coming for the Cox Plate.

Also,  for those new to this thread,  we have another thread going where we pick out our weekend sporting specials ... click here for a gander

Whoa what a trecherous day. Struggling to find a best bet. Rosehill super tricky with 3vyear olds coming back and soft with rain to come. Playing the valley as leaders track.

Best bet a quirky one. Summer sham a place. Will get out in front and be very hard to get past.

@Macca Seems some money has come in for Impavido. Into $4.40 on TAB. What’s the best price you saw?

5.50 enhanced at Laddies is still available DZ.

A place is fine Binman, often its a better pick as long as the odds are reasonable. Have ya got a horse and race number there old chap?  :)

All set to go fellas, Saturday morning chores are done, mind you it only consisted of a trip down to Godfreys for a pack of vacuum bags.

Gosh, you can feel everyone’s fingers hopping to the keyboard these last few days.

Should be another great day’s racing.

Some news on Santos, pulled out of today’s race with a very minor issue, should be good to go for The Run To The Rose On the 8th of Sep.

Got in a good position, looked a little flat the last 200-300m.

Chautauqua was the big story Macca. Missed the start by 8 lengths in the trial and finished 2nd to Zousain by about a neck in the end. He wasn’t fully stretched out but the panel said he won’t pass after fluffing the jump.

The stewards have laid down some quite stringent rules that the horse has to pass so it might be the end.  But who knows?  The connections might keep pressing forward.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
