Ben Newton out with ankle injury

Featured Replies

Pretty stiff to injure it before preseason even commenced.

He showed glimpses last season before ultimately becoming a bottom 6 fringe 22 player, as the article suggests mainly through injury.

Hope his recovery goes smoothly.

Very tough luck for Ben who was working hard during the break, to improve his endurance and hopefully cement a spot in the side.  2016 is most likely a make or break season for him, and now he has to do it without the benefit of a pre-season.  Good luck Ben!

I really like Newton and think he has the potential to be a really good player. He has a good eye for goal, but just needs to work on the defensive side of his game. It's shame he's injured. Fingers crossed he can fight his way back into the team.

Real shame for him.

It's obvious he has the skills and smarts to have a decent career, just doesn't seem to be able to cover the ground well enough and as it says he was working on his endurance. He's one of the best kicks on the list.

To give him the best possible chance of saving his career I'd actually extend his preseason through until at least April, maybe even until May until he plays games. If we bring him back early he'll play well in the VFL but never be able to impact at AFL without improving his tank.

Bad luck of course but injuries happen. That is why depth is important.

Like most here I wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

The silver lining is that it promotes Oliver one place up in terms of making an earlier debut. That is the advantage of the depth we are assembling in our midfield.

It was bad enough that the Melbourne Football Club created yet another humiliating scenario inside its wretched season at Marvel Stadium last Sunday, but the final insult is that it has been commanded to return to the scene of the crime to inflict further punishment on its fans this week. Incidentally, if this match preview, of a game that promises to be one of the most unattractive fixtures in the history of the game, happens to cut out of your computer screen three quarters of the way through, it’s no coincidence. I’ll be mirroring the Demons’ lacklustre effort against St Kilda from last Sunday when they conceded the largest last quarter turnaround for victory in the history of the game.

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.
