why are they booing Goodes'y

is the discomfort of goodes'y pushing for more truth in our history being taught at schools behind the booing?

..... and what part the shock jocks play in ramping up racial & fear based booing?

& neil mitchell stick his 2 bobs worth in

Earlier this week, he told BBC’s Extra Time* program that casual racism was a problem in Australian society, and that the first steps to eradicate it was education.

He said you couldn’t really blame Australians for their racist views because they were taught the wrong things about the colonisation of the country.

“I’d hate to put a figure (on the amount of racism) but the history of our country is based on so much lies and racial policies and things like that that have suppressed my people and lots of minorities in this country,” Goodes said.

“So you can’t blame people for having the views they have... the way I see it is I can use my position to help educate people, to see through the things they can be taught growing up… to see Captain Cook didn’t found Australia as I was taught in high school, until I found out otherwise.

“So, education is a big thing. People can change. I know they can.”

Goodes’ comments on the true history of Australia provoked an immediate reaction from Melbourne 3AW’s Neil Mitchell today.

“The sooner Adam Goodes finishes as Australian of the Year the better, as far as I’m concerned,” Mitchell said.

“I’m sick of the continued sniping. At times Adam Goodes seems not to like Australia. He’s trying to change the country. Yes, parts of our history are not decent but we have moved on from that.”

In the BBC interview, Goodes spoke at length about his own experiences of racism, and how it had affected his family members who internalised it and turned to other methods to cope.

“Racism towards me… has shaped my life… I remember the person who said that and when and where they did it,” he said.

“A lot of people still unfortunately in our communities don’t see how that has any effect racially.”

When questioned by the interviewer about why he seemed so “tolerant” against racists, Goodes said: “We’ve had to put up with a lot unfortunately… you become quite tolerant because if you don’t you become very angry and you do things you probably don’t choose to do.

“I have family members who can’t take it as well as I can. They react with violence, with drinking, drugs. These types of things are a coping mechanism because people don’t understand how much racial abuse can hurt people. It can put people into depression.

“…I think also is if (you’re) constantly taking this racial abuse, (you’re) going to start thinking ‘I’m not good enough, I don’t belong here, where do I belong?’… If I can’t find an area where to belong, bad things happen around drugs, alcohol, depression… even suicide.”

Goodes has stared numerous attacks since he began highlighting racism in Australia.

Last month, New Matilda revealed that a specialist reviewer for the English section of the National School Curriculum review, Professor Barry Spurr repeatedly called Goodes an “[censored]” who only won the Australian of the Year title so that Prime Minister Tony Abbott could place “Abos in the constitution”.

Spurr also wrote that as a footballer, and with a mother from the Stolen Generations, all Goodes needed was a disability and he would be the perfect role model for Australians.

....... it's his activities off the field that Adam Goodes hopes to be remembered for, like being named the 2014 Australian of the year. The honour was bestowed upon him on Australia Day, a day that means different things to different people - especially Indigenous Australians.

"For Aboriginal people it means a completely different thing. But what I am trying to educate many of my Aboriginal brothers and sisters is that it should be a day of celebration also for us," he said.

"That we are still here, that we are still alive and strong, that we still have our culture, there is still language. Let's not focus on the negatives anymore. Let's focus on the positives. Let's rise above it and be the better ones."

Adam Goodes also talked of the impact of racism on his life, saying an incident in 2013 where a 13 year old girl called him an ape at a game, reminded him of just how far Australia still had to go to combat racism. The 13 year-old girl subsequently apologised.

"I'm always going to accept an apology of a young kid, who made a mistake she didn't even know what she was saying." He added that the incident did give him an opportunity to raise the issue of racism publicly.

"That opportunity to not only educate a 13-year-old girl, but help educate other members who sit in the football crowds, people in the communities, people in the society, that those sort of things are unacceptable."

Adam Goodes told BBC he got his fair share of racist abuse growing up because of his Aboriginal heritage. He said many people don't understand how constant racial abuse, even low level casual racism, can affect people.

Some people he said, fall into a downward spiral of depression and drug abuse because of the constant feeling of not belonging.

"I've had family members who can't take it as well as I can, and be tolerant. Some react with violence, drinking, drugs, these types of things."

Along with being one fo the co-founders of The GO Foundation which provides Indigenous children with education scholarships and support, Adam Goodes was also formerly a member of the Howard government's Indigenous Advisory Board.

As for a career in politics? He hasn't completely ruled it out.

"I think when you want to do something positive for a large amount of people, then you have to be at some sort of level, whether that be at federal or state. We will see what happens."

As you can see by my username, for over a decade I have posted on demonland as Wrecker, which as everyone knows is (was) Whelan who came from aboriginal heritage. What you don't know is I was born in 1980 and have seen greats like Flower, Lyon, THEOX, Tingay and Neitz, however, I hold the wiz, Jeff Farmer as the greatest and most dear to me player I have seen.

I am passionate at the footy and boo where I see fit:

the umpires when we are being dealt an unfair hand

the goal umpires when they get it wrong (don't care if male or female)

Milne for his off field discretions

Eddie for always wearing the wrong hat (If I wasn't already I would boo him for his racist comments to Goodes)

Michael Long after the 2000 GF incident

Anyone who stands between Melbourne and a premiership

When I boo Adam Goodes make no mistake it is for his attack on a 13 year old girl. 17 year old boy goes to juvenile detention for rape or murder and his name is rightly surpresed. 13 year old girl, clearly from a lower socio-economic family says the wrong thing and is branded the face of racism on national tv with a follow up interview. Goodes is not completely to blame the television networks should be ashamed as well but I don't know who too boo there..

Tell me Wrecker45... when you first saw the cameras focus on what was happening after Goodes pointed out the section of the crowd where the racial taunts had come from, did you immediately think to yourself "hey that's just a kid, a 13 year old girl"? I know I sure as hell didn't and until I heard the reports long after the event, even after numerous viewings of replays, I would never have picked the guilty party as having been a 13 year old. So, it is easy to understand how Goodes, in the heat of a game, would not have realised either.

Here's the problem right here. We haven't 'moved on from that'.

There is still significant social inequality in Australia regarding Indigenous Peoples.

Of course Goodes at times wouldn't seem to like Australia. There is a lot to dislike. Disagreeing with your country's social policies and wanting equality for your people does not equate to hating your own country, nor does it make you a horrible person. I'm sure Neil Mitchell doesn't agree with everything Australia does either. Damn right Goodes is trying to change the country.... FOR THE BETTER. You can't just stagnate with the same policies over and over again. The country needs to change and improve, especially with regards to Aboriginal social equity.

Demonising someone for wanting to change the country is ridiculous. Mitchell is the dangerous one here for having his head in the sand and convincing other people to do the same, not Goodes.

As for the girl, I agree with Hardtack. I couldn't see she was 13 from the TV, how could Goodes see it from the ground? He called out racism when he saw it, something to be applauded.

With regards to the war dance, how cares? Let the guy do a war dance if he wants if that's the way he wants to honour his heritage. It doesn't effect any one else. No one bats an eye at the Hakka (sp).

he didn't attack a 13yr old girl, he defended himself against abuse, racial abuse. & that girl learn't a valuable lesson in life, that will hold her in good stead.

I agreed with everything you said wrecker up til that last sentence. if you bothered to attend some anger management classes you would change your thinking. You are wrong to have the perception he attacked her, after-all, it was in fact her, that attacked Him.

Absolutely he was not to know at the time and he wouldn't be the champion he is if he was busy watching the crowd. He has, however, had ample opportunity since to recant his comments on the young girl being the face of racism and has't.

Agree with my opinion on how Goodes has handled the situation with the young girl or not I want it to be known that I boo(ed) past tense for that reason and it had nothing to do with the colour of his skin. I say past tense because I saw an interview with Goodes on the weekend where he talked about being booed and I liked what he had to say. I wont be booing him going forwards unless he wrongs a Melbourne player.

Perhaps you should take a look at this article, noting Goodes' tweet, where he stated (funny how such things apparently go unnoticed, yet every other detail is under the microscope):

"Just received a phone call from a young girl apologizing for her actions. Lets support her please#racismitstopswithme #IndigenousRound

— Adam Goodes (@adamroy37) May 25, 2013"

I just looked up what Goodse'y said, Re his australian of year quotes, etc, wondering why he's getting booed.

It seems it is for many reasons.

I know the country hasn't moved on, neil mitchel may well have, but that is the problem; people like that seem to want to brush their dirt under the corner of their rug, instead of airing it out, & giving the neighborhood a chance to discuss the dirt, & end up with an understanding of why & where that dirt came from. no, not on 3aw mitchel.

once the community has all the facts to & fro, & had their discussions & their arguments, a real understanding of all issues can become apparent, & some truth can be seen. & much hurt can be finally understood, & empathy can grow.

a 13 yr old girl is totally beside the point, that is the best age to learn. even if embarrassment can happen. the rebellious years are the years of experimentation & of peer pressure & of following the leader; more important to put kids right on issues of significance at that age, so the following of leader-sheep doesn't grow legs.

Goodse'y was right to point out the abuser in the crowd, & if the abuser was 13yrs of age, so what. & if the abuser was female, so what. & if the abuser was a kid, so what; all the more important to take a stand, after a long time of abuse & inequity.

its nothing to do with left or right, oh, & by the way, I hit down the middle. just because you think the right hand side of the fairway is the centre, is the reason you hit at the left side. you must need your eyes or your perception checked, to get you balance. this may set your aim & perception straighter.

hardtrack I was actually hoping someone would post a link to Goodes doing the right thing. I see the best in people. A lover not a hater.

I would prefer to see Goodes apologise. A dual brownlow medalist who has a microphone to Australia whenever he pleases and earns more money than most of us can dream of. Are we supposed to think that his accepting of her apology is noble? Let's not forget she is 13, has had her face plastered over the news and is from a clearly lower socio-economic family. Make no mistake the television networks are to blame here more than Goodes but I would have liked to see him right what I believe he has done wrong.

Ok as mainstream Australia and the law of the land stand a centrist would agree with the following:

Marriage is between a man and a women

Carbon dioxide is a naturally occuring gas and infact plant food. We shouldn't tax it

Economic refugees are illegal immigrants

Let's not hijack the thread you are Stalin like left.

What more could he do other than go to the media saying what he says in that article/interview and go on to social media as he did with that tweet? Everything he said there was out of concern for that child's well being and in the hope that she and those around her would be educated in how hurtful such comments can be so that there would be a positive outcome for all.

As you agreed previously, he could not have known at the time that he had pointed out a 13 year old girl in the heat of the moment. Once that became apparent, he did all he could via the media to protect the girl... however, the media being what they are, went on a feeding frenzy.

Perhaps if the media made a bigger deal of Goode's forgiveness to the young girl we wouldn't see all the booing. I personally would have liked to see him do more.

What I keep trying to say is I have booed Goodes in the past and I don't have a racist bone in my body. I tend to think the majority of those booing would fall into the same boat.

I don't agree with you much Wrecker but this one makes sense to me. Boo the opposition footy player just like any other.

I hope you're right about the majority falling the same boat, unfortunately there are a few posts in the other Goodes thread that make me doubt it.

I think the issue is that while (perhaps) the majority boo Goodes either because they don't like him as a player or because everyone else is booing him, there are going to be many who join in for reasons of racism as it gives them an opportunity to let it out without having to be open about it and there are probably many who see the booing as justifying their racist stance against Goodes (or indigenous Australians in general).

I don't read anything about your 'stalins' or 'communism', or even ideological so-called right wing stuff. I just read things I hear about from the media, or from people in discussions, & I think of how I feel about it, & about its implications. that is called being human. not being 'stalinist', whatever that is, or whatever your implication is meant to be.

just because people have taken the middle further to your so called right within the last 28+ years, doesn't mean your imaginary centre has changed, or balance if you prefer, has shifted from the centre... it just means that more people have become more materialistic, so there is more people over your imaginary side of the line.

so I suggest again to you, that I am still in the same (I guess you'd call it political position) I was, when I became aware of this political left or right, as a kid... you see, I am for the people, & the way that Robert Menzies had the country set up, with State Owned banks, & statutory bodies like the SEC, & Vic Rail, & the trams that all had ticket sellers/conductors on them, who looked out for the welfare of people on-board.

so I guess your calling Robert Menzies a 'stalinist'

Because they are the things, I believe in... it's not me who has shifted from the middle political ground, its some of the populous who have been tempted by greed, & this business allows them to avoid their consciences, & more they're inner moral compass. So some have moved to become more greedy, & so are called more right wing.

Its the political parties who followed the move away from older values, shown by Bob Hawke taking the labor party to occupy the centre ground, forcing the libs further right. With the advent of more kids going to Uni', & expected by families to be earning big big dollars, the Uni' kids have grown to be greedy, & competative against their fellow man. Causing an upward spiral trend of greed, & of social pressure/stress within our communities.

You see most people are not reflective of these sorts of topics, & they lose track of where they were, socially, & how they have drifted in their years of aging & competing.

they don't try to arrest, or change the slide, but just accept it, & play its game... making the social fabric weaker, & more selfish. Ignorance of these things is no excuse, to just say well, they're doing it, so I will as well.

So you are for the people? more than 70% of the people choose to buy a Murdoch paper. Power to the people!

I'm not a sheep wrecker, I don't buy papers, & haven't for around near 20 years now. Power to the people is when the people stop being brainwashed by the claptrap on the likes of 3aw, & hear truth from the likes of Goodes.

Power to the people, & may they not consume the tripe dished up to them, on most mainstream media, these days. your not on radio are you wrecker, maybe your bolt, or mitchel, or that other dead wit, on ch-10 what his name,,,,

i'll look it up, just hang a second wrecker, whilst I google the project show, price, he's priceless, & pointless.

It needs to be understood in the context that most Australian cities are one-paper towns, that paper being a Murdoch publication.

Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra have Fairfax alternatives (The Age, SMH, Canberra Times) but who knows for how much longer? Soon enough, they will stop printing those papers and you will only be able to access them online.

Of course, that doesn't change the fact that tabloids like the Daily Telegraph in Sydney and the Herald Sun in Melbourne have been outselling Fairfax by 300,000 - 400,000 papers a day for years, which is why Fairfax is in the poo.

Damn lies and statistics Wrecker. 70% of people who buy papers (and that is a declining percentage of the population) may buy a Murdoch tabloid paper operating in a monopoly market. Murdoch's tabloids play to the least educated part of the market to maximise sales and political influence. He feeds them his view of the world and some of them may believe it and you declare that as power to the people!! Give me a break.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
