2014 Rookie Draft

Mitchell White (MFC) - 188cm, 85kg, Medium-Tall Defender.
Mitchell White (WCE) - 190cm. 85kg. Meidum-Tall Defender/Forward.

Would be pretty happy if our Mitchell White turned out as good as the last one!

Side note - can anyone explain the GWS strategy.
By my count they passed on 8 Rookie picks and 2 PSD picks.
Why would you go in 10 players short on your list? Surely your just wasting opportunities to find potential guns?

Note: I understand their list size reduces over time. But surely that only justifies going 2-4 list spots short. Not 10!

They have a normal list of 46 and one rookie now so they still have more players than anybody else even after all of today's passing. Not taking players is going to make list management easier going forward plus they probably not that interested in filling their list with off cuts and lowly ranked players

Interesting - does this imply they could have had 56 players on their list? Doesn't seem to add up.

- Development resources

- Salary cap

- Footy department costs (they are on a short leash from the AFL)

- Low yield - how are these late picks or rookies going to get a game ahead of their gun pick ups?

I get the not filling the list angle, but why did they pass for 7 rounds in a row then use their last pick? Isn't that just giving all the other clubs up to 7 chances to take the player you want?

Finlayson was part of the Giants academy and because no other teams bid on him they automatically get him with their final pick.

Something close to that anyway, Shifter explained it but I was busy reading Demonland to fully take it in.

The academies. The gifts that keep on giving.

The Demons return to town fresh off a thumping win over the back-to-back wooden spooners, the West Coast Eagles, played in front of a sparse crowd at Marvel Stadium, the same venue that hosted last week's heartbreaking loss.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

It was bad enough that the Melbourne Football Club created yet another humiliating scenario inside its wretched season at Marvel Stadium last Sunday, but the final insult is that it has been commanded to return to the scene of the crime to inflict further punishment on its fans this week. Incidentally, if this match preview, of a game that promises to be one of the most unattractive fixtures in the history of the game, happens to cut out of your computer screen three quarters of the way through, it’s no coincidence. I’ll be mirroring the Demons’ lacklustre effort against St Kilda from last Sunday when they conceded the largest last quarter turnaround for victory in the history of the game.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.
