from my memory it was more of a surprise that toumpas fell out of the top 3; he was regarded as an elite prospect, and was more highly regarded than o'rourke or plowman who went at 2 and 3

worth remembering that they are effectively finished as afl players as well

in fact, if you look at the 2012 top 20 it's a real miss more so than a hit:

  1. lachie whitfield - hit
  2. jonathan o'rourke - miss
  3. lachie plowman - miss
  4. jimmy toumpas - miss
  5. jake stringer - hit
  6. jack macrae - hit
  7. ollie wines - hit
  8. sam mayes - miss
  9. nick vlastuin - hit
  10. joe daniher - father-son (arguably a miss)
  11. troy menzel - miss
  12. kristian jaksch - miss
  13. jesse lonergan - miss
  14. aidan corr - hit
  15. taylor garner - miss
  16. jackson thurlow - miss
  17. josh simpson - miss
  18. brodie grundy - hit
  19. ben kennedy - miss
  20. tim broomhead - miss
  21. nathan hrovat - miss
  22. dean towers - miss
  23. marco paparone - miss

Corr is a miss useless player. Daniher is a hit. Only 7 hits isn't a lot. you should do this for all the draft's to see which is the worst draft. I'd be interested in it.

It's probably already been said, but if we had taken Wines, we probably wouldn't have had one of Oliver or Petracca today.

Similarly, whilst 2019 was a horrible year, without it we wouldn't have Jackson, and probably not have Kossie either.

Silver linings in everything.

I wonder about that all the time. That draft In 2019 delivered 3 absolute stars. 2 of which we wouldn’t have had a chance in landing had we finished top 4 as everyone predicted.

That timely dip has already delivered and will set us up for many years to come.

I believe we are in a very strong position to compete for many years and hopefully snag a premiership or two. We will have to contend with the Doggies as our main adversary but it will be interesting to see who else will rise to the occasion. Essendon and Sydney look the goods and have talent all across the park.

corr is a perfectly serviceable, fairly decent key defender

and i could TOTALLY do hit / miss ratings for past drafts! perhaps something for over summer as i watch our premiership victory for the eleventy-zillionth time

Sliding doors moment. The alternate reality with Wines perhaps doesn’t have Oliver…

How’s that for a nightmare ‘What If???’

I have always believed the draft is overrated. I would never trade a good player for a high draft pick. A high draft pick is a hope, a good player is a good player.

The overvaluing of the draft can be seen if you go through the all Australian team in any year and check their draft positions. If the draft was completely effective, they would all be top 10 picks. They are not.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
