FAREWELL MATTHEW BATE

With the way compensation was rolled out we would have got pick 500 for bate.

Last year the Dogs offered 33. If only that was repeated this year. This year we will get nothing.

There is no possible way Bate won't be delisted. None.

Meaning we blew last year's pick 33.

Yeah we blew it. Brad Hill from Hawthorn. Gun......

Redleg. There must be hundreds of stories just like that and every club would have instances of players whose value whether by trade or by retention goes up and down from year to year.

Under the new system whereby delisted players become free agents after 1 November, players like Bater will be open for recruiting by other clubs and we'll get nothing but ... on the other hand ... there might be players who suit our requirements who are out there and can be recruited for nothing as well.

If we play our cards right, we can all win.

That's their selection, why does it have to be ours?

The then brand new coach thought he could play a role, turns out he couldn't. And it was a higher pick than that, 39 from memory. We obviously made the wrong decision, but I hardly think it was a very costly one. For Bate it probably was, but to be honest that doesn't bother me that much.

Im glad he was given a year with Neeld, otherwise we would never have known .....
