WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Until very recently he lived over the road from my work mate in Eltham; still a top bloke by all accounts.

One of my all time favourites but I do question the part of the story about kicking the late goal against Hawthorn that got us into the finals. Pretty sure that happened in 1964 and not 1959 and that it was the second last game that season.

It was also interesting to note the decision of the MFC chairman of selectors in 1968 that Hassa didn't have two years left in him at 28 years of age. Hassa had been the club's leading light along with Stan Alves for a few years and we hadn't been travelling very well. His departure saw us return to rock bottom in 1969 and we continued to struggle for years.

Hassa Mann was honoured by the Melbourne Cricker Club in 2011 receiving the Hans Ebeling Award for outstanding service to the club.

Adrian Battiston is Jonathan Giles Adelaide based player manager.

Think we sold Battiston for somewhere around the $200,000 mark to the Swans in the 80s.

Hassa's goal made the difference between us finishing 1st and 5th in our latest (was going to say last, but I am once again optimistic being pre preseason) premiership year, 1964. (For those too young, 5th then was - no finals, mate).

As regards his delisting for 1969 - geez, did you have to remind us of the extent of the horrendous, dark depths our beloved club descended in those days !! (It is OK, I will phone LifeLine if needed. Being a longstanding MFC supporter it is in my speed dial!)

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
