MFC - Where are we honestly at

It wasn't the rank and file member that voted for the merger . It was Ian Ridley and his 12 person committee with their 3,500 proxy votes that got the vote through . Plus they then booked a small venue where many couldn't get in to vote . 80 - 90% of the people at the Dallas Brooks Hall that night were against the merger .

Cheers

yep absolutely. my dad went to vote no and was locked out

Where are we at?

Most of our best 22 are young and have played approx 40-60 games.

It's clear the "game plan" under bailey did more damage than good.

Our game plan now will take time to become the norm, with Neeld & Craig at the helm we should be at minimum playing a similar style to the top 4.

This year will be like last year, bu I think we will see something develop that will get us to the finals.

I think we have to accept that we have to "Start again" to a certain extent . It's too early to tell how different our game plan will be but we do know it will be different .

So , we've gotta be patient again ! Most of us probably feel we've been down that road too many times .

Here's the reality - Our previous game plan was identified as (in part) "Bruise free" . So change has to happen . How long this will take is anybody's guess .

Contested possessions last night was 127 to 121 yet we were well beaten . I'm not really sure what that stat means with our team because often those numbers would signify a reasonably competitive game .

My guess is that Neeld won't play too many "outside" types and not too many with poor disposal skills . But he's probably gonna have to compromise .

Originally I thought that it might take until 2/3rds of the season for Neeld to get his game plan up and running but it may take a fair bit longer . He may need a number of new players .

I haven't given up on the season though and won't until it's mathematically impossible to make the finals !

Cheers

Too right. I couldn't believe Tiger Ridley would allow his own MFC lifeblood a voice that night.

I thought we were doomed. How could we ever support tge Hawks??

Had the merger gone through I would have given up on Aussie Rules as a spectator sport.

Nice post - I would also like to add.

1 pre-season under Mission is not enough time to get our squads core fitness level to play 100 minutes of AFL football at the highest level.

1 pre-season under our increased new coaching team is not enough time to fully develop ever player on our list.

Our football department needs further $$$$$ investment in many, many areas. I'm still concerned about injury recovery, opposition list analysis and a few more I would prefer not to discuss here.

That was the part i don't think the Pro Merger crowd quite understood. So many MFC supporters alienated.

Would have been a great movie.

Oh I nearly forget - I now think we need to work harder on getting more of our supporters to "buy in" the negativity and "impatient" approach by some clearly says to me more work has to be done.

In a lot of ways that 1996 R22 Demons/Hawks game took on great significance . I'm fairly sure our side of the vote re "The Merger" was already established but the Hawks had not yet decided theirs .

They won that game by 1 point to scrape into the finals . Neitz 6 , Dunstall 10 from memory . Over 60.000 at the MCG that night . Stand corrected on that one . I was concerned that the Hawk members might vote for the merger but when they made the finals ...................

We finished well down the ladder and were playing for pride only .

The Tigers lost their round 22 game to slip out of the 8 to finish 9th ! Some things never change .

Fitzroy played their last game (as Fitzroy) the following day . Tumultuous times .

I always find it funny when people use MFC & impatient in the same sentence. Anyone at the '87 Prelim will know what i mean. We are a lot of things but impatient is not one of them.

We are honestly at the start of the season with a big chance to win the first game .

Given our soft draw we may be in the 8 for most of the season .

I think we can expect to see the start of some good times .

Seriously....

I find it funny too but possibly for different reasons - as I said elsewhere many sound like my kids "are we there yet?" They want the spoils of success but they just wont put the hard work in the stands. Blame the players, blame the drafting team & until we are "winning" refuse to participate in the big picture. They just wont "buy into" the modern game of AFL football. Instead they prefer to discuss VFL football mentality.

Who are the people you are talking about Doc? What other club membership has paid off a 7 figure debt as quick as we have?

Is it possible, that this may be the very root of our problem? I have never considered it till today. Do we have a membership that just continually fails to "buy in"?

Preferring always to blame others? Is our football club merely a refection of ourselves?

How dare you accuse the supporters of the MFC .........

Actually ,you got a point there .

Sh!T-Im divided on this one .

Do we? Have a membership that fails to 'Buy In'... Or is it a membership that feels people in High Places are far superior to themselves in Business & running the footy club, merely because of the high & Mighty MCC ! ? That grandeur of the MCG is pretty daunting, so the people in they're running that place Must be Giants....

Is this why our people (members) are so trusting & don't get involved enough? Because of the 'G' ?

If so, the quicker we get a Social base away from there the better.

You have a real problem with the MCC at the ''G don't you DL.

Without them club should have died. But somehow hung on.

No. Not at all. My beloved Grand Father was an MCC member & cricketer. He's the one who got me barracking for the Dees My Dad was Carlton thru & thru.

But what I believe is we lack a passion & fire thats shared by other AFL clubs that gets extinguished, IMO by the MCC mantra. Thats what I truly believe is the problem. I don't want us to move away from the 'G', but want us to get away from the stifling PC of the place.

I been around there a bit & around VFL/AFL clubs & champ VFL/AFL players, & I believe we should get out of there except for game days.. It hasn't hurt the Tigers in the 60's - 70's when they played but not trained there.... It didn'yt hurt the Bombers when they trained at windy Hill with sheedy, but played on the 'G'...

It hasn't done the Pies any harm since Matthews took them all the way, but they're based aways & have they're own independence.

Yet we struggle to get a chant going, let alone a Mexican Wave. IMO we are Inhibited, those in our club & the MCC. Inhibited & Politically correct go hand in hand.

We sack a player if he's so tough, he's 'OH NO', :o Too mean for Us... Get rid of Him.

*(These are the thoughts of a dee-luded individual, the places & names are altered to protect the innocent.)

But DL we didn't come from a suburb. We came from the 'G. That is our base.

The other clubs just rent.

I can understand what you mean, but we must learn to coexist.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
