MFCs Uncertainty List

Were desparately short of senior positions that are open to our young players so they can get development time in the Sandy 1sts. We have so many depth players that talented young ones like Newton are not getting a go now that the likes of Bizzell & Nicho are back from injury. This is becoming a problem & that is why I decided to right this topic...

While I dont agree with the manner by which you relative value senior depth players, I think you raise a pertinent issue about the disposition of Nicho and Bizz who based on a full and fit list will battle to play with MFC again in any significant role.

Both are contracted for 2007. Both takes spots at Sandy that would otherwise go to others on the list. Would the Club considering closing out and paying the contract residual to one or both these players? Or put it another way if Nicho and Bizz were out of contract at the end of this year, would you resign them for one or more seasons ? I wouldn't they could take the PSD route. (IMO we should have done that with Bizz 2 years ago and it is coming home to haunt us)

This issue is one MFC must confront at the end of the year and be considering now. I do not know enough about Buckley and Neville progress but they have two year contracts and from my limited understanding it would require both parties to be happy for the contract to lapse after one year. I do not expect that to happen.

We must ensure that our association with the Zebras provides a suitable basis for the development of our younger players. Some of the issues are on MFC's list. Some of them are on Sandy's list. Both Clubs need to work this out to the satisfaction of each other.

Love to see Showbiz Bizzel get a game, would love to see him rip it up next year and turn around his career.

Nicho would have to go, we've played better without him this year so bye bye.

Philbo Read is an each way bet

Motlop is gone for sure

I dont think Neil would have Aka we've got depth in the mid field as is so we will never get him

So you want to axe Neville & Buckley 1st year draftees? Forgive me if I find your logic confusing.....

[deleted by mod- please read the code of conduct, and avoid swearing]

Let me try & explain to you what I have written in another way.

I wrote down the MFC playing list deviding it into players that can play defence, players that can play midfield, players that can play forwardline. I then devided all categories into 'tall', 'medium', 'short'.

Then I looked for the ones most guarenteed a senior spot & weighed this against those with the most downside to what they can offer our future. I also looked at who would be kept as backup to our 'BRAND' players.

I in now way want to see these 2 kids dropped off the Dees list but because they haven't yet made themselves "known", I included them in a group to be scrutinised. That whole list surely will not all be traded or delisted...

dont like talking bout it this time of year, but so far, get rid of ward, wheatley(trade)nicho definitely, motlop thats it so far. i could change my mind...... but i doubt it.

RR,this is a separate issue. Glad it was brought up.

To dig a little deeper on this issue on Sandy & MFC, the issue with the Melbourne's list is that it has depth & few injuries. Something new to us.

The Melbourne players not picked for the weekend AFL match obviously go into the Sandy player pool? Who then decides who plays where? Who's call is it really?Williams? Would ND really want Sautner @ FF each week at the expense, for arguments sake, a Newton or Hughes.

On this point,do they name the player with AFL experience ahead of a young draftee, the developing player who needs game time who was benched most of the time for Melbourne the week before,or the rookie who is showing promise?

The problem is number of MFC players who can play with the Zebra 1sts each week. Its restricted. For the remaining players who arent chosen in the firsts, do they get the quality of football they need through the VFL reserves?

Is this the Zebras problem? Theyre in the business of being successful. Why wouldnt they want Sautner @ FF every week. He kicks goals and is arguably one of the most consistent forwards in the comp. Besides, theyve had to take a step back in playing personnel for the association between the 2 clubs

I would never suggest there is politics in sport. The association between the 2 clubs appears to have worked, but I believe it works to the detriment of ther development of Melbourne's playing list. No offence to Sandringham FC, but I am in favour of a complete rethink of club affiliations.

Posted

This all gets back to the supposed global vision of the AFL. While we all would like to see a return to a true reserves competition, it is never going to happen. With so many non-victorian AFL clubs, and more to come, it is just not feasible. AFL clubs will have to have alliances with teams, or field a team, in their home state competions to enable them to give surplus players game time.

In the VFL, I think only Geelong go it alone and only North have two affiliations. In WA and SA I believe that the AFL clubs have multiple associations. I don't know much about how Brisbane and Sydney operate other than the news last week that Nick Davis was playing for Wagga. Or was that against Wagga?

So, it gets down to what is the best format to ensure a top quality and vibrant competion for the VFL. Currently, I think that the rules are that alligned clubs have no restrictions when playing another alligned club but must adhere to the 12/10 rule when playing against non-aligned clubs. The 12/10 rule is enforced in the finals. Sandringham seem to always use the 12/10 rule. The Bullants last year were runaway leaders of the competition but didn't give a yelp in the finals as they didn't have 10 decent VFL players owing to them overloading with Carlton players all year. They have gone back to the 12/10 option this year and will be very dangerous in the finals. They have obviously decided that it is better for all concerned to perform well in the finals.

When the AFL club is carrying a lot of injuries on its list, the 12/10 rule is not an issue. Do we think that the Footscray supporters are at all concerned about this issue? It seems that we only have PJ injured, although no one knows when Moloney will play ( If we know Smith as 426, surely Moloneys new name is 'test' ). This leads to a log jam and the players lower down in the pecking order being relegated to the VFL seconds. This is really a fortuitous situation that could be changed by just one bad week of injuries.

Is the VFL seconds such a bad competition? With the assumption that class footballers are being shunted into Sandy's reserves, they surely should be near unbeatable. They are mid table and get thumped most weeks.

In New South Wales there is the state wide comp (NSWFL), and the Swans have their own team within that comp and that is who Davis was playing for, it was just in Wagga, probably against their local (and probably pretty good) side, which would have as much importantce to the comp as the Swans reserves.

There is also the Sydney football competition which has affiliations with the Swans, but as I understand it my local team, the Pennant Hills Demons (which produced Lenny Hayes), also has some kind of affiliation with the Melbourne Football Club - when the team is in Sydney they often spend time with the Pennant Hills team and the local supporters.

Shouldnt be doing this until after the season, but I'm bored so I may as well.

BELL............I wouldnt trade or delist him. Love the way he plays his footy, and I think if we got rid of him, we would come to regret it big time in later years.

BIZZELL.......Biz is an unknown quantity at the moment. He is so very very good when he's up and running that its hard to fathom his possible departure. If it were up to me, I'd keep him for another year so he can have a full pre-season and give him a chance to dominate once more. Very handy player when hes up.

MOTLOP........Just about more than any other player on the Dees list, I would love to see this guy succeed. Maybe thats because of the connection to the Broadbridge (RIP) disaster, but I think he has the talent and the guts to succeed. Again I would keep him, just because he fits in well at the club and is terrific back up in case of injuries. That said, he will do well to secure another contract.

NICHOLSON..To me his career is over. He will either retire at the end of the year or be delisted. Unfortunately for Jack, I can't see another club picking him up either. A shame because no-one had a bigger heart.

READ...........Never was a fan of Philthy. Couldn't understand why we picked him up in the first place, and bar 3 or 4 games I think he has been a failure. Is a liability at times and I think we can use his spot on the list for a younger player or another midfield type. We could try to trade him, but I highly doubt any club would be interested.

SMITH..........Can see the potential in big 426, but has he run out of time? Has been at the club for some time, nearing 4 or 5 years I think, and the question around Smith is whether the coaching staff have run out of patience with him. Possible departure.

WHEATLEY....This is one guy I would not get rid of. Hurts the opposition with his pace and long kicking. Sure he is in competition with Brown, C. Johnson and Ward for the same spot but in my book he is better than two of those guys.

WARD..........Keep him. Terrific depth player and is showing form at the moment that suggests he is in our top 25.

I find it tough to comprehend that every time there is a player that is mentioned as a possible trade, there are about 10 people saying 'oh no, can't trade that guy'. It seems the only guys we CAN trade are old players who are under an injury cloud and haven't played AFL footy this year - and somehow we're going to get Judd for one of them and a low draft pick.

I love it :P

GONE :

NICHOLSON : Unless he is unfortunately contracted for another year like Bizzell.

WARD : It will be between him and Godfrey. Godfrey should get the nod to stay.

SMITH : Has taken too long to develop.

READ : Will make way for Jones to develop.

MOTLOP : Again unless he is contracted.

TRADE :

WHEATLEY & FERGUSON : Trade them for Aker. Would not delist them especially Wheatley.

ROOKIES

WARNOCK : Line ball wether he gets promoted probably will depending on how deep the draft is and what we do during the trade period.

NEAVES : Will stay on the rookie list.

HUGHES, GIANFAGNA and BODE : Should not be retained.

I think we will only delist the bare minimum of 4 players so there will be players who get another chance.

DOES ANYONE HAVE THE UNCONTRACTED PLAYERS LIST ?

I haven't taken into account any legalities when making my asessments of our list, nor do I know the laws well. It's purely based on my take on what they have to offer the Dees.

Many players of the AFL have been traded or delisted whilst on contract, it's just a matter of settling the arrangements, look at Wowoeden. Some players when told they can't expect to get a game, retire.

All players at MFC whether on contract or not are assessed on a regular basis.

I think our Half Back line is potentially our weakest link, (Rivers aside).

Expiring Contracts (end of 2006); Travis Johnstone, Aaron Davey, Brent Moloney, Ben Holland, Phillip Read, Daniel Bell, Shannon Motlop, Daniel Ward, Paul Johnson, Chris Johnson, Simon Godfrey, Nick Smith, Matthew Bate, Lynden Dunn, Micheal Newton, Simon Buckley, Heath Neville, ® Matthew Warnock, ® Shane Neaves, ® Daniel Hughes, ® Andre Gianfagna

Must go.......

Daniel Ward - unaccountable, one sided, can't kick, bad decision making...contracted expires at the end of this season.

Paul Wheatley - weak, which is surprising considering his build, easily beaten one on one, trade him at the end of the year...unfortunately, contracted to the end of 2007.

Alistair Nicholson - i can't believe he has played 100 games, very ordinary player, period. Will have to put up with him for one more season...contracted to the end of 2007.

Shannon Motlop - contracted expires at the end of this season....i can guarantee you one thing, he will not be at Melbourne next year.

Simon Godfrey - i like godders but his bad decision making and disposal skills are just not good enough

Nathan Brown - injuries and age are catching up...contracted to the end of 2007, will play one more year.

Phillip Read - who cares if he has mongrel, he can't play football

These among others must improve;

Nick Smith - will get another year but has to do something.

Mark Jamar - still has not proven he can play...can take a good mark, but very rarely does....and is a good tap ruckman, but that is it. Shizen around the ground.

Daniel Bell - ANOTHER wasted early round election (no.14), he has had some mates since 2001....Molan (9), Armstrong (25), Rogers (26), Smith (15), Sylvia (3)????...contracted expires at the end of this season, would not be bothered in the slightest if he left for nothing.

Colin Sylvia - Would definately keep but does not deserve a place in the team at the moment...has been horrible the last couple of weeks...the problem is with Davey injured who do we bring in?...if it comes down to Motlop?...no thanks, id rather sylvia. Has to have a better year next season.

People seriously over rate the trade potential of Bell.

Opposition sides do there homework folks and Bell has show absolutely nothing to suggest he could be a "Good" Footballer.

He lacks awareness, he makes wrong decisions, his turning circle is out there for someone with such pace and he simply doesn't appear to have any footy smarts.

He has pace and is tough.... but that doesn't cut it in the game this day and age.

Posted

He has been disappointing this year no doubt, but he is still young and has had his fair share of injuries and i am just hoping against hope that he will come good by the year after next at least

Your right about his deficancies but his attributes of speed to the contest, reading the flight of the ball, aeriel skills, marking, tackling, undoubted courage, & aggression go to making him a player worthy to persist developing his game for another 2 seasons to try to develope his 'composure in tight', & his awareness...

BELL............Can be a liability through lack of awareness when under pressure? Probably keep to develope.

BUCKLEY.....?.To me an unknown so is not a locked in keeper? Possibly keep.

MOTLOP........IMO his soft efforts thru the season appear demoralising to teamates. Gone.

NEVILLE.......?.To me an unknown so is not a locked in keeper? Possibly keep.

NICHOLSON..Can be a liability through lack of agility & speed. Trade to Lions, Blues or Hawks for 3rnd pick! (40 - 50)Gone.

REID............We need space on the list, trade. (Blues or Hawks)

SMITH..........Could be in trouble, is really a tall F-pkt. Backup if Neitz or White were badly injured.

WHEATLEY....In competition with C Johnson/Rivers/BIZZELL/Miller/Bell/Yze/Green. Possible trade bait?

?????????????

PS.I forgot WARD....Trade

((BIZZELL.......Has been surpassed by C Johnson/Rivers/Miller. Trade for 60+ pick! Gone.))

I am currently reconsidering my thinking regards the 'Bizz', after witnessing his efforts at Williamstown 2 weeks ago where he showed his class & composure. I was impressed by the quality of his work.

I guess the other thing is that I think that Bells vulnerability has been exposed with the 'infashion' accountable playing style played by most teams this year, Wheatley is not playing as well as I thought he could & CJ needs to develope further & inject some extra urgency into his game.

I think I would now keep the 'Bizz' for one more season & then revaluate @ the end of 07...
