Thoughts on the new PAT set up ? Goes back to the 15 yard line now.. The defense can also score 2 points on a return. Didn't see much wrong with the old rule. I guess it was always a formality after the touchdown.. Makes it slightly more difficult now

I don't like it. I've been reading some of Pete King's thoughts on it and he's obviously a better Football mind than me, but I preferred the old method. I get the argument that something like 4-5% of PATs fail so it's a waste of time, but I think the weighting (unlike rugby union) on the scoring is about right, with the focus on all the work that goes into a TD rather than some piddly play afterwards.

I'm prepared to give the new rule change a go ... the PAT is a token point anyway in it's old form so making it harder (especially in inclement weather) might make coaches go for the 2 point conversion as a consequence (at least a fair bit more often) I've also got an inkling that people will get used to the rule change quite quickly once it's in operation.

I also like the fact that both plays are "live" as well now. The rule change has been talked about for a few years now so I saw the move as an inevitable one anyway - I suppose I was ready for the change. Progressive thinking in sport has never bothered me and it's interesting that 30 of the 32 clubs voted for the change.

Of course, whenever there's a rule change there's nearly always unintended consequences so at a guess, I reckon the kickers conversion rate from 33 yards might get worse (possibly because of the extra pressure?)

We might see a few run back interceptions from those 2 point attempts as well ... blocked PAT attempts can be run back as well so there's quite a bit involved with the rule change. A maximum of 2 points only can be achieved from a run back (I believe)

NFL rule change: Extra point moved back, defenses can score

I don't mind the change but I would hate to see a O linesmen get injured on a field goal attempt. So the latest on AP is after he wasn't traded and the vikings stayed strong that he is contracted and required AP and his [censored] of a manager are threatening to retire from football. He is desperate to get out of Minnesota even though he did the crime and we then payed him in full for a year off which was sanctioned by the NFL. Ahhhh it goes on and on.

Over the AFL season already.. How long left to the season ? Although I'll just go from one fustration to the next lol. Yeah interesting how the Petersen situation turns out, neither side won't to budge.

AP is back. Praise the gods the saga is over. Of course I've been following every word, tweet, article and no shows at training but if you haven't really followed let me tell you it's been one of the most ridiculous things I've seen. So now the mood amongst vikings fans and a few in the media have us playoff bound. I think that is over the top. Number 12 for the packers says hello. Detroit will still be good without Suh and Chicago sucked last year and still beat us once. We have a long way to go. I'm getting the season pass this year since the vikes were on tv once last season. Can't figgin wait.

Seems Gamepass has gone up a bit in $$ this year ? Can't remember what I paid last year but it's $165 for every game or $129 for just your teams game, think that is more than last year. Think I'll just stick with all the Falcons games.. Find it hard to find enough time to watch one game let alone other teams... Can't believe were under 8 weeks until the first pre season hit out, although not much to get excited about, they take the pre season less serious then the AFL does

I LOVE the new PAT rule. Mostly cos we have a good kicker probably. But I've always hated extra points. I think they might cancel it again when they realise it makes kickers suddenly one of the most important commodities in the NFL.

Welcome back ladies and gents of the most popular alternative sport thread in demonland.

I get pumped once the pre season starts and then I see a pre season game and I dont recognise any player. Sometimes they let a starter enter the field to drink some Gatorade and then they come off again. We have 5 pre season games this year so it's a lot of slow torture until the real stuff starts.

Now I only have ADSL, I won't be able to get game pass, will have to stick with the one Rams game I can see on Foxtel.

Can't wait til the season starts.

49 days...

Still sooooooooo long!

Haha I'm litreally counting down the days... The pre season will atleast give us something to take an intrest in and that's only 3 weeks from today

Been thinking the last few weeks as the season draws closer and I feel more excited for the season to start then any of the AFL... I don't know if it's the way AFL is played these days but I find myself almost enjoying watching the NFL rather than AFL. I think now there is so much more down/junk time in AFL that I find it boring.. At least in the NFL when you've got the downs and your always trying to get that next 10 yards that there's always something happening, even though there is a lot of stop start in the NFL I find it more exciting.. Never would have thought Id be saying I almost prefer it over AFL!!

What I like is that games not involving my club I get more enjoyment from than most non Dees AFL games.

Thought I might post up all the playoff highlights ... a couple at a tiime up until the preseason starts (which kicks off in earnest on Friday August 14th - oz time) There is an earlier game coinciding with the hall-of fame weekend (Minnesota @ Pittsburgh) but all the teams are in action from mid August.

The NFL have posted up all these games in HD on youtube which the below links will take you - the highlights can be "full screened" as well ...

1 of 11 ... wild-card Cardinals @ Panthers

2 of 11 ... wild-card - Ravens @ Steelers

I agree and I think it's also because the presentation and analysis is far beyond anything seen in the AFL. Compared to real pro sports the AFL is still amateur hour.

AP aiming for 2500 season...

I think a line from the castle is appropriate here.

I reckon he will get 2000, not 2500.

AP needs to remember that he is a cog in the wheel. If we are to go anywhere it'll be on the back of bridgewater and our defence. Lots of drama over deflated footballs still. Brady will take a lot of players association cash and go to court. Id ring him and have a chat but he "accidentally" smashed his phone so I don't have his new number.

Continuing on with all the highlights of last year's playoffs ... the links will take you to youtube where you can "fullscreen" the games ...

3 of 11 ... wild-card Bengals @ Colts

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

  • PREGAME: Richmond

The Dees are back at the MCG on Thursday for the annual blockbuster ANZAC Eve game against the Tigers. Can the Demons win back to back games for the first time since Rounds 17 & 18 last season? Who comes in and who goes out?
