2009 Player Review - # 25 Kyle Cheney

Kyle Cheney - Kyle is a kid with a great attitude and it was good for him to play 12 games. He was in and out of the side early on but he produced some consistent form at Casey and he broke his way back into the senior team. Kyle played multiple roles and on different guys as a defender. He has really good courage and backs into packs. We expect him to improve in the next 12 months– Sean Wellman on Melbournefc.com.au

Has a great ability to hit a pack at exactly the right time to effect a spoil.

I am not 100% sure where I see him go as a player, he is not tall or quick. Which is not to say that he won't be a useful player, but he will have to make up for his defficiencies in other areas to be of value.

Don't rate him all that highly to be honest... Think he could be delisted... Skills are average, he's not accountable as a defender, he's not overly quick... Just because he's young, doesn't mean he should automatically be kept, and I think he'll be one to make way on our list...

I think he may be kept as Wellman may have hinted - "we expect him to improve in the next 12 months". Although on another thread I have noticed that he has not been re-signed as yet. You're right that he is not overly quick, I think he can be accountable, but struggles on the small nippy-veryquick forward pocket types. I think he is good overhead. Let's face it, he played quite a few games and did ok in his second year.

I think the only thing saving him in my eyes is that he's been given a lot of time on the park. Obviously the footy department see a lot in him. Maybe an attitude/work ethic thing.

He's not a tall.

He doesn't have the great skills you want in a rebounding defender.

He doesn't have the pace you want in someone who is going to shut down a dangerous and pacey small forward.

Where's that leave him?

like totally choka dude ... just kicking up at GC

I'd like to see Cheney get more match's, if kept.

Cheney is strong over the ball, he is strong in the air for his size, he gets in good positions, he is determined, he links well by foot, he's not easily pushed aside in one on one's. He is also improving at a rate that pleases the coach. Cheney is a young man who has already shown himself to be a safer defender than some who have been on the list for a number of years. Not as fast as others, but I think he deserves his place on the list.

Fetta has improved greatly in the last 12 months. In 2008 he struggled to hold a regular spot in Sandy seniors, and this year he played more than half his games for Melbourne. Like some posters above, I'm not sure where he fits into our long term future, but continued improvement along the lines already shown will see his claims for regular selection in 2010 hard to deny. May turn out to be one of those 'good' AFL players whose work ethic, reliability and consistency enable them to compensate for some fairly obvious deficiencies, although I acknowledge that there are fewer of them at the top level as every year goes by.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
