The Majak Daw Thread

Featured Replies

He's got a great pair of hands and doesn't look at all like he could be intimidated. He has planty of pace for a big guy. His tap work is quite good and he seems to love the contest. A couple of bone crunching tackles. What's not to like.

Good fun to watch isn't it?

I was waiting for the clanger, or the obvious miskick... but it didn't come. It's funny when you hear people carry on and on about a player, for example, there's a guy who's been mentioned as a first rounder, who has longish curly blonde hair (his name escapes me) who basically only has run-down tackles as his highlights. Daw has so many strings to his bow. It remains to be seen whether he gets to stretch his legs in the AFL, but I reckon he'll get drafted, an I reckon he has all the attributes.

Then again. So does Newton.

Dappa... do you think ( like myself ) that theres just a bit more 'life' in Daws eyes. He really , really wants to play. He's not relying so much on his ability as his determination. I dont see this in Newton, your e.g.

It was great to watch, I have seen it a few times now and still can't see the obvious flaw that must exist if he is being considered as a rookie only. You're right if it wasn't for the fact he is new at the game, he started playing at 12, he would probably be looked at as a second round pick even first round maybe. Melbourne have been the leaders in this field so let's hope we show the way and recruit him as the first of many to come to the club. I reckon he is as every bit as exciting as Nik Nat and could be better. He seems to have natural ability and is not just an athlete or a basketballer learning the game.

Well duh, It's a highlights package and he is nothing like a Jurrah type. Jurrah's played football all his life, kicking it and trying tricks since he was a kid.

Daw is as raw as anything and ever a project player if i've ever seen one. To use pick 18 would be the height of stupidity. Even 34 is stupid.

50 is questionable.

Take out that 5 goal game

in 12 other games.

12 effective kicks.

21 ineffective kicks.

Averages 2 marks per game.

Averages 4 handballs per game.

Averages 3.5 kicks per game.

Not a ruckman but less then 8 h/o per game.

9 goals all together.

but he goes all right in youtube.

Rookie lister.

why?? whos likely to be there at 34 that has as much potential as this kid ??

Even if we arent clever enough to snare him he will go in the draft...and before 50.... He's garnering a lot of interst.

Also depends on how many picks we use / the latest pick we use

Even if we arent clever enough to snare him he will go in the draft...and before 50....

So be it. Pick 34 is still a decent pick even in a 8 month draft.

Also depends on how many picks we use / the latest pick we use

absolutely.. will depend upon trade week as well as thatwil determine our actual picks. But youre right..it depends.

Given recent murmirings you would have to think we will look at some 'prize' in the PSd.. we wil probably rookie two to replace two let go..( seems to be our trend somewhat ).. so thats 3.. ..Now here your observation is manifest. Do we stick to 1..2..18..thats 6 ( 6 replenishments to list for any confused )

so it could well stop there.. or.. depending on trades etc.. we may not have 18 at all..or not have either of 18 and 34...but maybe something in between...but also one player in return of trade.. making 5 ( instead of six..hopefully this is as clear as mud , two players out for maybe a single quality player in trade etc) then.. maybe we use say this left over pick for Daw...

It can go so many ways..

I cant see us not using 50..for exactly as you propose..

Yeeeeah... But then that's hardly something to hang our hats on, is it? Just because he seems determined. Sibosado and Yarran both look determined when the pills there for the taking. I think it goes far enough to say he looks like he loves the contest and is hungry for the cherry when it's his turn. That's about all you can say that's proven by the footage.

True. However, there is the fact that perhaps he looks quick when surrounded by who he's playing against. Put him in round 1, and you might see a different story. But then that's what the screenings are for I guess.

You can keep your stats. Besides, while Jurrah clearly considers a footy just another part of his body, that doesn't mean that Daw isn't gifted with one. Look at the shape of his kicks, the action, how he handballs with good technique. He puts many AFL listed players to shame in some of the footage.

In this year's draft, EVERYTHING from 34 onwards is likely to be speculative. We could take another Bartram, and hope for the best, or we could do what everyone around that selection will do, and go for a player that has upside, which this kid has.

Bottom line? From all the footage I've seen this year, not a lot of it leaves me with much excitement. MANY of the players are cookie-cutter mids that come through every year, only a handful of the first rounders look like they have any kind of special gifts. Even Trengove looks like a smooth operator, without being magnificent in terms of endurance, leap, kicking distance etc etc. Morabito looks like he could have the athleticism to be in the ballpark of stardom.

With all that in mind, I'm willing to perhaps be a bit more generous when it comes to looking at third and fourth rounders. I don't expect much, and Daw looks to me to have plenty of the gifts that make a speculative pick. So why not?

I think Daw has one great advantage...hes learnt how to play footy properly from theget go. Unlike many of us who constructed ( I have no doubt ) some perculiar habits as we grew up emulating our idols. He ( Daw) has a really good action kicking. He might need to punch his handballs a little more forward than up...but gee thats not a bad ask of a kid who has a very good pair of mits !! A lot of his marks are sure-grab one goers. He likes his footy.

His genes have probably blessed him with an all day running tank. Without doubt we are at the dawn of a new era. Weve been heartened over the years with teh prodigious talents of many an indigenous lad...we're about to see the birth of a new player......the African. :)

Yes..probably getting a little carried away but its coming...and so will true international challenges.. maybe 10-15 away still.

As many from all persuasions at some time watch with awe at teh Jurrahs... so too will we one day at the Daws. Be kind of handy to be at the forefront of this ;)

Just read this thread from start to finish. Funny to see how he went from Warm to hot to cold to hot to pumped up super hot! to...:lol:

Im scared to make the comparisons!

I watched the footage (as i have done with most top 15 or so prospects,) before i read any comments and thought:

At one stage i was watching Nik Nat, the next second i thought i was watching Jurrah.

Great: Mark, Tap work, Leap, Turn of foot, SHOT FOR GOAL, Tackle, Repeat Efforts, Smothers/fwd line pressure and the way he imposed himself in some contests.. the upside is huge imo

I thought, I wonder if this kid will be around by pick 18. I'd definately take him ahead of Butcher on what i saw from the footage.

Jacey put it into perspective a bit.. But his best is brilliant- and he has had a 5 goal game already. .

Do we take him in such a shallow draft at pick 18, to make sure we get him?

Wait for the camps.. but right now im thinking Yes! -he might be the best available option by then!

Edit: Cheers Mousey - Great Thread!!

If you took Daw's footage you see there and could magically alter it to be (I hate to say it) just another caucasian kid, running around doing what he's doing, there'd be a LOT more said about him.

At one stage i was watching Nik Nat, the next second i thought i was watching Jurrah.

Sudanese Daw gets scholarship

"SUDANESE-BORN draft prospect Majak Daw is one of 11 young footballers to receive a Mike Fitzpatrick Scholarship for 2010."

Well this just might have raised his profile and currency somewhat.

"Other recipients of the award for 2010 are Nicholas Collins, from Belconnen FC in the ACT, Jake Neade from West Alice Springs, Noosa’s Aaron Laskey, Luke Wilson from Port Adelaide, North Hobart’s Sam Darley, Dyson Heppell and Jed Lamb from Gippsland Power, Bendigo Bomber Zack May, Wilbur Pomorin from the North Ballarat Rebels and William Elliott from the Western Jets."

Am hoping this lad has caught the eye of our FD ;)

heh..

just realised how you might have read that.. ;)

actually meant

- like nat-nat, in how he was leaping and tapping in the ruck

- like jurrah, in the way he marked, getting those long lanky arms up and how he positioned and imposed himself in some marking contests

Niceee!

As long as he does well at camp (doesnt have to 'star') he'd be my Pick 18..

Cheers for the link BB59

A few weeks back Nugget Jones posted a statement from Schwabby relating to the 'campuses' of the footy club. In it he referred to the encouragement given to mfc employees to visit forums ie like this one. I dare say the recruiting team would have seen vision of Daw, even watched him play live.

I dare say they've seen Majak, & his teammates many a time.

For the record i would draft this Kid has the makings to be anything even a ruckman (which i think MFC badly need) but could solve the problem everyone seems to be concerned with KPP he looks like he will be a project player of sorts but seems to have some talent and very athletic and lets face it that goes along way these days re: NicNat

But the qusetion is Pick #18?? probably to high but will he be there at #34?? I don't know as i hav'nt researched this too much but is he invited to the draft camp??

we all love LJ who would have thought after playing a few games for collingwood in the VFL he would be were he is today and probably the most exciting thing in AFL....

For those of you relying on youtube HIGHLIGHTS packages to guide you in an assesment of a player - you need to be mindfull that for every positive piece of play shown on there, there can also be 4-5 stuff ups.

My case in point:

If you watch the following youtube clip about this player Paul Mugumbwa from South Freo - you would think he's AFL worthy, and that he's a star (as it is a VERY IMPRESSIVE highlights package).

Truth is, he's not .. lol

Beware!

I myself have done some incredible things on a football field that have left a lot of people surprised even myself, and I am a very very ordinary footballer.

Everyone is capable of momentary brilliance.

You need a bit more than that to make it at AFL.

bothered to watch much of Gumby ?? I have.. whenever he was on Aunty.. . Highlights vid aside his accomplishments are quite decent. Magumbwa could easily have played AFL had he been introduced to footy earlier... just like a certain MD !!

Theres a type of athleticism in them we see rarely in our footy

Fantastic!

You must be one of the 20 or so people who stand along the forward pocket fence line every week - and instruct him when to lead.

I'm not saying he's a terrible player by any stretch - you saw the highlights package and what he's capable of, but if any Tom, Dick or Harry had of just seen the highlights package and based an opinion off that, they'd tell you he was the next Cyril Rioli (when you and I both know that isn't the case).

While some talent cannot be questioned - Highlights packages can make anyone look good.

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.
