Sorry just saw the player contracts post that is pinned. 2010 :( OH NOES!!!. In my mind we must move these 2 on. Good value while young.

What contract agreements are these guys on. Love to be able to trade these 2.

WTF have they shown???? 2 clearances a game. Grouse

Jones was copping a heavy tag for much of this season in the absence of Brock, and TJ being moved on. He, along with Bate are two young players who have a bright future at the MFC. Jones just needs to work on his skills and acceleration away from stoppages over summer.

I just got back from overseas and needed to watch some highlights as I was starved of footy...

The Freo game shows why Bate's important. And Jones has showsn WAY too much to just trade at the age of 21. Both players are years from their prime. We would get more from them when they hit 25. And at that stage our core will be older...

If... and it's a pretty big if... they both turn out to be crap, trade them then. Trade them now and they'll hurt us...

We can't just keep getting rid of good 21 year olds just cos they're not Selwood or Franklin types. We'll NEVER have a mature side.

How was Bates first half Dappa? 1/2 and game all year don't cut it at the Deez if you ask me. Contracted anyways so I hope they pull there fingers out and grab a game or maybe even 2 by the scruff of the neck cos Im still waiting.

One came runner up in a B and F in his first real year of footy, his development stagnated this year but he will continue to develop. IMO Jones will become a clearance machine once he corrects a few mental flaws.

The other is a strong forward with a big left foot and a big engine who is also developing and had a few poor games at the end of the season.

Young players will be inconsistent, many mature to become very good footballers, some dont. You dont trade players too early in thier development, it will come back to bite you.

We are trading FOR young talent not THE young talent. Trade the older blokes.

I just think we could get a half decent return on them while we can. If they fail in the next 2 years they'll be worthless.

I agree with Golly on this one.

Yes they have boith shown a bit, but Christ if there are two blokes with more negatives than positives it is those two.

Nathan Jones

Pros

- tries hard

- great tackler

Cons

- below average disposal

- slow

- poor awareness

- limited scope for improvement

Matthew Bate

Pros

- raking kick

- good overhead

Cons

- no foot spead

- turning circle of Boeing 747

- slow reaction time

- unathletic/poor leap

- orange hair

I wouldnt say no to trading one or both. Its Dean Baileys list and if he can get high draft picks in return or players that he would prefer to move forward with that will improve the team, then I wont complain.

Agree with everything in that statement.

Matthew Bate

Cons

- orange hair

Trade him now before it's 2 late

I don't think much of Jones but Bate is a better player than what you think. He had a bad hamstring injury early in the year so he wasn't at peak fitness through out the year I think his form at the end of the year showed that. If his form is similar next year I would consider it but not now he still has too much upside. Sylvia should be traded before him.

cons

- orange hair

Come to think of it, has anyone actually seen Nathan Jones' hair?

What if he's been lying to the club all this time?

I can't bear the thought.

Worse than Didak/Shaw.

DD, are you implying Nate's a red dog too? Oh god!

Any chance we could get pick 4 for Jones and pick 19?

NO!

Agreed. Jones and Bate will only get better. At worse, their value in two years will be the same as today.

I agree with Golly on this one.

Just proves what a great idea that this is.....

But why do you think Jones was copping a tag?? next season most clubs would think he is no good so he wouldnt get tagged so he can dominate like he did in '07 and bate, when he isnt injured is always in our best

wona miracle- great point

bater was playing half the year with a glove covering a hand injury and jones copped heavy tage. imagine a midfield with moloney, mclean, jones, prismall, mcdonald, morton, buckley- some hB flanks

Jones and Bate may be young but they are not the future. Jones is a poor disposer of the ball and poor decision maker. These are skills of the game that are difficult in which to improve. Where these skills come naturally the player is invariably a class act. Where these skills have to be manufactured by intense training improvement will occur but they can also fail at any time. I say give Jones a chance and let him play out his contract but I doubt he will be at the club in 5 years when hopefully we are challenging for a top 4 position.

As far as Bate is concerned he simply is not aggressive, he is not tough and not physical at the contest or the player. You can't get tough. You either have it or you don't and teams will work out he is soft and target him accordingly. Trade him now. This years draft has depth (so they say) so lets get a second round draft pick for him this year and lets not wait for the inevitable to happen in a couple of years time when the whole competition has figured him out and no one wants him.

Too young to write off but I'd say we've all got our concerns with these 2

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
