In today's Age, there is a list of each team's inside 50 differential, ie; no of times a side gets it inside their 50 compared to their opponents. Suffice to say that the top 3 teams being Geelong, Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs have the best differentials with +11.5, +8.4, and +7.0 respectively.

At the other end of the scale, the sides with the worst differentials are the following:

North Melbourne -3.5

West Coast -6.3

Essendon -8.3

Melbourne -14.2

The gap between ourselves and the 2nd worst is staggering. The figures that reaffirm my belief that our players over-possess the ball.

Thas obviously taken over the year. Id like to know how we rate over say last 5 games.

Where was Port Adelaide?

Comparing those rankings to clearances, disposal efficiency, and 'first possession' stats would be interesting.

Id go along with that.. bare stats mean nothing really... All need a qualifying aspect

Be interested in seeing in 5 match strings also, to see if any trend.

Bump.

Freo game:

Possessions - 37 more

Clearances - 10 less

1st possessions - 6 less

Inside 50's - 26 less

As i've stated all year, our ball movement and team structure is garbage.

Still waiting on the game plan champ that suits our team list. Any closer?

Given our team list available what structural changes would you have made?

As i've repeated ad nauseum, but you fail to comprehend, the high possession game plan doesn't suit our list because we don't have speedy players who can evade a tackle, and carry the ball. At least give our forwards a chance of a contest, with a quick kick into the forward line, with crumbers waiting for the spill.

Believe it or not Rhino, you actually have to kick goals to win a game, and that's difficult to do if you don't get the ball into your forward 50.

But as long as you're happy with our miserable performances, that's all that matters.

we're coming last so clearly we are going to be ranked last in almost every stat... not reallly a big deal...

our midfield is clearly lacking- Daniel Rich solution?

Fact is you have been asked ad nauseam to put a game plan that suits a slow, under skilled side with poor leadership and you have not heen able to put up anything. And you still havent

So you have been all about bomb it long to a contested situation. Brilliant. No Neitz, no Robbo and you have got a plan. You might have noticed what Freo did in the first quarter when they bombed it long to Pavlich in a contested situation. Turnover every time and the ball came out of the F50 every time. And we dont have a Pavlich that give a contest.

Believe it or not Rhino, you actually have to kick goals to win a game, and that's difficult to do if you don't get the ball into your forward 50.

The irony of your comments would be lost on a game plan strategist like yourself.

I'm not. But at least I take the time to understand where the list is at, what the Coach is trying to do with such a young team out of overall ordinary list and where its taking us.

You've big noted yourself often like before on how critical you are about the coaching and structure. And when challenged to put up. You cant or dont. Fatuous at best.

Very typical of your posting Rhino. Usage of obscure, demeaning words doesn't make you intelligent on a football website. You're debating skills are more suited to Parliament Question Time.

What does our lack of I50s have to do with over possessing the ball? Its the way you dispose of it that counts, many of the teams with high I50s counts could be accussed of over possessing the ball, they execute it properly though so it doesnt hurt them.

I'll take adjusting to Bailey's game plan over bombing it long into our forward 50 so it can come straight out again any day of the week, that might win us a few more games here and there in the short term, it will never take us to Premiership though and that whats it all about. This point seems to be lost on the 'kick it looooooooooong' brigade that insist on turning up every week and yelling it out incessantly...

our midfield is clearly lacking - Daniel Rich solution?

Nail. Head.

Apparently we dont need Rich though cause midfielders are a dime a dozen? You know there's 50 Judd & Ablett's running around but only 1 Franklin & Brown?

I think we should take the best player available, whether that be Watts or Rich I'll leave that to experts. Its clear that our midfield requries at least as much and probably more work than on our forwardline though.

The article says "the inside 50 entries ladder is almost the same as the premiership ladder". That tells me the statistic by itself is meaningless. All it says is that the best teams get inside 50 and score goals, and the worst teams don't. It's like saying a golfer who hits more "greens in regulation" scores better ... well, duh.

The context in the article was about power midfields vs power forwards, not simply about possessing or over possessing. It was arguing whether it might be best for a team like Carlton to continue building a power midfield that gains possession and moves the ball inside 50 more, rather than using cap dollars keeping a power-forward like Fevola. In a sense it's more relevant to our debate of whether to take Natanui, Rich or Watts than it is about possessing and game plans. Surely any team's game plan would contain the wonderful revelation that the aim is to get the ball inside 50 as much as possible?

By the way, indiscriminately "bombing it long" inside 50 to Franklin and Roughead, two of the best power forwards in the league, is partly what lost the game for the Hawks on Friday night. Players like Petrie had a field day and it was turnover city.

The statistical list the I quoted wasn't related to the article regarding power forwards and power midfielders. And Petrie did well to back up against the Hawks on Saturday night after playing against the Pies on Friday night. B)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
