morkel looks faster than anything our players have faced for a while.

One day it will click with Warner that he doesn't have to smash every ball that comes his way. Without wanting to blunt his game, someone should be into him over shot selection and when to exercise patience i..e on a green top when the ball's still new and doing things.

Agree with Rogers - that sort of rearing ball can be unplayable. He was stiff.

Shaun Marsh and Steve Smith saved the day for Australia which is in a rare position for a visiting side at this ground - slightly on top.

Painstaking this morning at Centurion but it was more enjoyable to watch Smith's 100 than Brisbane's first half.

It was a nasty delivery alright.

The Aussies have started the way they left off against England. Great centuries to Marsh and Smith. 3-23 the South Africans and we're well on top. The track has got a bit of spice in it as well.

makes a nice change from modern TV.

Cricket on the radio is great. I can't think of another sport where one can paint a better picture when listening in. I've been watching the cricket and the Olympics and having the radio broadcast of the cricket handy is therefore a must. However, the footy wins tonight! Our Demons are doing alright.

Doolan looks a nice player. Good, solid technique with an even temperament. There's something about the way he looks at the crease - comfortable, not flustered and a touch of elegance. An impressive debut against a world class attack.

Warner gets another century. He's played a number of crunching shots as usual and has given a few chances. That's the way he plays though - there's always a chance he'll get out in an awkward way. It's pleasing that he's starting to turn his half centuries into centuries. Dave is a matchwinner in terms of how quickly he scores - by him scoring so quickly it effectively ends up creating more time to get the opposition out.

As for Johnson - his turnaround continues to astound. 4 months ago he wasn't even playing Test cricket and now he's arguably the best cricketer in the world. He destroyed their batting with 7-68. There might be another knockout blow when he gets at them again in the 2nd innings.

I can't believe how fragile the worlds batsmen seem to be against Johnston. just one bowler. they just go into their shells. de villiers was more like old school showed some resistance & composure.

these batsmen today would have been 2nd 11 against Lillee/Thomson back in the days, or against the West Indies barrage.

Johnson's short ball could be hard to pick as well. Maybe the batsmen just don't see it coming - usually there's a "tell" but with Mitch, there possibly isn't. Also, his short one is extremely accurate and is designed for one purpose. Being a leftie helps and when he goes around the wicket against the left hand batsmen, he looks just as dangerous. All the best fast bowlers have usually had a great short ball but it seems that Johnson has taken it to a new level. Thommo and Andy Roberts were lethal with their short ball as well (when they were in their prime)

At the moment, Mitch is an unstoppable force. As long as he maintains his pace and accuracy, he'll continue to get the wickets. The better batsmen should be able fight back though - de Villiers looked reasonably comfortable against him (he got out to him with a mishit aggressive drive)

also maybe its off a reasonable length.

thommo was quicker than Mitch, but was dangerous with his direction. also probably hard to pick with his slinging action. no one new where it would go. the wickets as well.

back then the MCG wicket was pretty hard I think.

We've just completely outplayed them. 3 centurions and we win by 281 runs (we also declared at 4 down in our 2nd innings)

Not the only win for the Aussies overnight either. Our Australia Under-19s beat Namibia by 101 in their first game at the Under 19s World Cup to lead Group B. They should win that group with their next opposition Afghanistan before facing a danger game against Bangladesh.

Not that the pitch accounted for all the batsmen. Alviro Petersen edged behind in Johnson's first over of the innings because he had to play at a well-directed ball angling across him. Smith himself departed in Johnson's second over to the first of Doolan's two outstanding takes.

Along the way, Johnson had become the seventh Australian to claim 250 Test wickets and not surprisingly picked up his fourth Man of the Match award from the past six Tests. South Africa might take solace from the fact that the next Test is in Port Elizabeth, where the pitch is generally slower. But they should note that Johnson's finest Ashes Test of this summer was in Adelaide, on a sluggish surface. They have four days to work out how in the world to play him.
