Why we must land a big name player this summer

Featured Replies

So Kerr, Cousins, Brown and Pavlich...

Yeah, well... An All Australian team would probably go ok...

Nah ive been saying for a while now Kerr Cousins and a big forward personally Id go with Fev.

If we landed Pavlich or J.Brown, we could contend for a flag next year.

LOL  As if those blokes would ever play for this club.

I see absolutely no reason to rush out , wallets aflapping to land a supposed franchise player. What for ? Are we likely to challenge seriously in the next 2-3 years. I dont hink so. we wil lbe tialing off our rebuilding staring a possible window then. So in teh mean time we throw money at some "big name" Foolish for mine.

we need to play smart. Lets sort out who we want , who we'll keep etc. Sort out the money ( contracts) for them. Lets make sure we can trade in the black. Thats how you do business. A big money bloke whilst sating somes apetite for cosmetic glory wil do nothinng for us except waste money.

There is a right and wrong time to spend money..NOW/Next year..aint it !!

agreed to a point, but maybe the year after. Carlton has got it right to a point (except for the cheating and losing picks bit). have got a number of high picks over a few years during which they landed stevens and then landed Judd and have started to make thier way up the ladder. Make no mistake they are on the way up. Judd is a champion player and great leader and their kids are starting to show thier worth. Barring injury they will be around the mark next year.

Although you would have to say that if a class player became available it would remiss of us not to make a play. We do have a leadership vacuum and if we could get hold of a player who could bring an uncompromising, win at all costs attitude to our club then we need that (ie Brown), regradless of whether that player will play a part in our next finals series.

A few father-sons wouldnt go astray. Maybe we need to consider a breeding program for past champions.

Pickett has been the biggest fish we've caught this decade.

You're right there, Pickett was definitely big when we got him. Never really wanted to shed the fat either while he collected his super.

Your admiration for list cloggers is amazing.

Do what the Tassie Hawks have done pay 92.5% get the money in the bank so when these young players become stars we have room in our cap to fit them in. In 5 years time we will have a premiership a brownlow medalist 5 all Australians we need room to keep the team together. Time to develop our own big name player no quick fix another year after this of pain before the march up the ladder commences.

We are close to paying the salary cap this year - very frightening!!

the other issue is that it will be harder to land a big name with new teams coming in..

we have zilch tradeability at the moment.......

time to drag a rabbit out of a hat i am thinking!!

A very practical man ( if fictional ) once uttered... " a man's gotta know his limitations!!" lol Same applies to a team really. We arent travelling to well. Right now isnt prudent to open a wallet with really nothing in it. I cede your view that mayube next year we possibly look at doing it for the yeart after.. So that would make teh mr magic man appear in season '10 That might be close to good timing.

But I should temper this with the idea that as teh poor end of town ( just a reality folks ) that maybe we grow som e of our own in the backyard instead of paying the inflated prices of teh (afl) Supermarket. Yes its harder to do so..but hey..like home grown carrots..they're sweeter and beeer for ya!! heheh. Point being you work within your means to expand them ( Isnt that right Mr Kyosaki!!lol ) .

It might feel better that we are the "we too" brigade.. look at moi look at moi ..we got this bloke etc. But does that really get you far ? We need a bit more than "1" marquee player to set this world on fire.

I simply feel that with limited means its beholding of us to travel a different path.

The only numbers I have seen were from 2006 and we were at around 100%.

Since then we have seen Bizzell, Brown, Pickett, and half of TJ off the salary cap (around $900k).

And next season we will have the other half of TJ, Holland, half of Neitz (vet outside), Yze, Whelan, and possibly White (vet inside) off the salary cap (around $1.3m).

We have added kids since then and our re-signings wouldn't get near what we have cleared from the cap.

how about this for an idea to get a couple of players cheap[draught wise]

we get two ex players to legally adopt nat and rich and we take them under the father son rule.

has anyone tried that yet?

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
